Y'all are doing so much Porcupine Tree that's heard by too few. 🤘 I gotta suggest 'A Smart Kid' from their album Stupid Dream. First heard it when quarantine intially started and lyrically it was so ironic: It kinda became my anthem for the times. I've said it once I'll say it twice. Y'all are cool! 🙂

'Recordings' was my introduction to Porcupine Tree. As you can imagine, I went from "never heard of these guys" to being a big fan and having half a dozen albums by them within a few weeks. Nearly 20 years on they're still one of my favourite bands. If you want to try another track from the album, then I'd suggest 'In Formaldehyde'

If there's one song I don't get tired of listening to, it's this one. Everything perfect, melody, lyrics, arrangement. This texture that Richard makes with his keyboards is beautiful.

Hi this album is a collection of unreleased tracks. Some were b.sides to singles. Others meant for Lightbulb Sun but didn't finish the recordings in time and wasn't put on the follow up album either. That track began in 1999 unfinished, so technically these tracks are older than that album dated 2001. Steven just decided to release some older material together. For the band they never quite made the cut for any album....which makes you think - If these were not good enough ? Wow ! Lol The further you go back with P.T the more they sound like Pink Floyd. My favourite is "The Sky Moves Sideways" - There are 3 versions on the album of the same name... My favourite is - 'Phase One' at 18 minutes long. The second 'Phase two' is shorter by less than 2 minutes and then there is "Alternate Version' at almost 35 minutes long, but lacks much of what makes 'Phase One' so brilliant. It is the superior version 100%. Incredible track. [ Curiosity will certainly have you want to hear all 3 versions, but begin with Phase One & it's track 1 on the album. ] Great reaction again. Good to see you are hearing older material - You are seriously in for a treat with so much to hear. X

...and also the songs "Ghosts" and "Sons of Pioneers" from the album Tin Drum which are not particularly my favorites in the band's repertoire but which perfectly demonstrate the importance of the atmospheric textures of Richard Barbieri's keyboards in the music of Japan as well as his contribution to the unusual atmospheres in the music of Porcupine Tree. Barbieri is the key element of the sound of these two bands !

This is one (of many!) songs from Porcupine Tree that I absolutely love. For those who do not know, the word "shade" can mean "ghost", as in the line _"I'm a shade, and easy to ignore"._ There are rumors that they'll get back together because there are plenty of fans who *WANT* them back together, but not because Steven has said much of anything to encourage those rumors. The other three guys have said that they'd be quite happy to do another album, although lately Gavin is so busy that he's not sure he could make the time.

Great reaction to this gem of a band. I just want to comment on something you mentioned in the video about reacting to more Yes after your musical lives changed upon hearing Close To The Edge. I'm confident most prog people would agree with my comment that before you listen to any other Yes music you finish Close To The Edge the album. The second side is absolutely necessary before you hear any other Yes. If EVER there was a perfect prog album (n my opinion a perfect record PERIOD) it's this. The second side is just 2 songs and both are absolute perfection, no exaggeration and both songs are completely different from one another just as the first side also stands alone. Yet all 3 songs belong together, you'll understand after you experience them. (notice I said experience because this entire record is a life experience) And any Yes fan that has requests they're waiting for you to record and post I think will I agree with me that we'd all love to see you react to those 2 songs before any other Yes gems because the songs are that good we want to share them with the both of you. (At least I hope they'd want you to react to them lol) In any event please take this post with the good intentions it was sent with and as always keep up the great work and keep loving each other.

There is an initial understanding I come to the "why" a lot of people don't get Porky Tree . . . These type of tracks are very sleepy, "chill" (hint hint Lex ;), esoteric, serene . . . and 2 to 5 years before I heard the debut of "In Absentia", I would not have "got it". I was into the quiet, spacy Pink Floyd tracks from their classic albums as much as their well-known "Rock" tracks, but Metal/Prog Metal bands started doing this with "Tiamat" (which a couple of us have recommended for Lex under Ayreon's "House on Mars" and guest vocalist from Tiamat, Johan Edlund ) circa 1992, The Gathering (with Anneke van Giersbergen), and Theatre of Tragedy (that inspired TONS of female-fronted Darkwave/Symphonic-Prog Metal). I couldn't get into a lot of it, I was used to the more in your face type of playing, more up-beat, intense and bit more going-on with the musicianship. I guess _Rick Beato_ would say it was because of the "Lydian/Aeolian/ Dorian Modes" that is utilized by many Soundtrack Composers, as well-as various Metal bands (like a Film; the music is setting-up your emotions to what is about to transpire). It may have been; Dead Can Dance, Tool (I like many of their tracks, but not as huge a fan as others), the post In-Absentia era of Porcupine Tree, Riverside, Opeth and Paradise Lost, that had me ready for PT's older material. And bands like: Leaves Eyes The Gathering Perfect Circle Katatonia Anathema Dead Soul Tribe Agalloch My Dying Bride Novembers Doom Autumn Guilt Machine Trees of Eternity Votum Blackfield OSI Leprous . . . and MANY more. Many of these bands take on "Black Metal" elements, others more Doomy, in mood more that the music style (if that makes any sense). Whereas some bands have become less of the Doom/Heavier sounds of their earlier days. Or have become heavier, but also melodic. But there are also tracks from other more famous bands that have the more tranquil, esoteric and moodier tracks from the likes of; Dream Theater, Fates Warning, Queensryche, Yes, (later) Genesis, Rush, Peter Gabriel, Devin Townsend and the like. (Note Lex; a track with violin, that sounds deeper like a cello with "rock": Fates Warning - "At Fates Hands", or "Chasing Time"). This was another reason I created Playlists with "Themes", because I wanted to hear these bands in "snippets" because I was intrigued enough _by track_ to start getting into them (or a particular album that didn't resonate with me). I started "getting it" and became a fan of this type of music, accepting that it pretty much became somewhat of a subgenre of Metal/Prog Metal without a name or title to put on it (other than "Doom" Metal, but many of these bands are beyond "slow and dirgy", and Doom comprises of its own subgenres as well - maybe "Dark Prog Metal"). To those that Don't Get It, it may take time to do so. You may not in the end because I understand most people want their music Up-Beat and not depressing. When I'm depressed, this type of music actually soothes me and I can relax, but I can relax to very chaotic and mathematical music too (I'm weird :p). There are always varying degrees of "intensity" of these musics, because some are more Metal, some more Progressive Rock, and others Alternative or without a category. I don't know this track, looking it up, that the album ("Recordings") is a compilation, as Steven Wilson says: "Six of the songs are taken from singles that were released in 1999 and 2000. Sometimes tracks don't make it on to an album first time around not for reasons of quality (or lack of), but perhaps because they just didn't fit onto the album, or one member of the band wasn't happy with the track. Also perceptions can change and I think we all felt in hindsight that these six tracks deserved to be heard by a wider audience...The remaining 3 tracks we recorded specifically for the album. "Oceans Have No Memory" is a new band recording of a demo that was originally issued on the B-side of the "Piano Lessons" 7 -inch single. "Access Denied" was written and demoed for Lightbulb Sun but no one liked it except me! So I took the opportunity to re-present it to the band for inclusion on Recordings and this time they let me do it. Finally "Buying New Soul" was a song recorded during writing sessions just after Lightbulb Sun was finished. I think if it had been written a couple of months earlier it would have been included on the album. We thought about holding it back for the next album, but in the end we felt that because the next album is probably going to be moving into different musical waters it should be released now." "Music for Meditation" . . . So maybe Porcupine Tree, Tool and Riverside will help people get into other bands to help them "explore" . . . or not. But I'll add a Playlist as a Reply as a bit of a Sample of what I'm getting at, so that anyone can find some time to kick-back and listen (with headphones, LOUD on your home system or in your car) . . . . and float away. Great request! Nick was on it about explaining the mood of the track and yes, the musicianship is always great guys (Chris Maitland on drums). - Lex, you share this with Nick since now we know for sure who is reading our blabbing :D.

Guys, thank you for PT reaction. Thing is they have ran out of ideas and no longer together. As a matter of fact they won't get together again. Try Tesseract or Leprous. They are VERY progressive and so much contemporary and alive. Please do Leprous "The Sky is Red". You will be schocked and amazed by musicianship and a voice!

They did not "run out of ideas"! Steven Wilson is the main idea man in the group, and he decided that he really wanted to go solo so he could do *whatever* he wanted, instead of collaborating with others. He wanted total control over the music he was making. He still had and has plenty of ideas, and has released many solo albums. His solo tours sell more tickets than Porcupine Tree ever did. ... although personally I'm happier with with Porcupine Tree's albums than Steven's solo albums. The other three guys in the band are all busy with other projects, and all three have said they'd like Porcupine Tree to get together for at least one more studio album, but Steven's not up for it. (not yet either. from time-to-time he'll mention that they'll probably get together some day, but "not right now") Colin's been busy with many different projects. Gavin Harrison sometimes tours as a drummer for King Crimson, and now full-time member of The Pineapple Thief. Richard's done albums with Steve Hogarth, and a few solo albums and EP's of his own. All of them have plenty of ideas left!

I wanted "Take a Pebble" by ELP but since that is now dead please try "Give It Everything You've Got" by Edgar Winter, an american musical genius.

Thanks for this. I’m a big fan of Yes, Genesis, Floyd and Rush and never given PT, or any other modern prog a listen (those other bands are hard to get anywhere close to!). Loved it. I’ll definitely be investigating more of their stuff.

If you liked "Buying New Soul" then I think you will like the album Recordings from which this title comes ! Stupid Dream and Lightbulb Sun are two other Porcupine Tree albums in the same vein that could be to your liking.

The live version of "Radioactive Toy" on the Coma Divine album is the definitive version !

The later live versions are excellent, IMO. Anything from the Coma Divine album or later. The studio version is mostly Steven, solo, playing all (or almost all) the instruments. "Porcupine Tree" wasn't a *band* at that point, it was just a fictitious name he made up.

@@garanceadrosehn9691 Yes I know all that (I have been following PorcupineTree since the end of 1997, having discovered the band with the live Coma Divine). I really like the very first Porcupine Tree albums but on On the Sunday of Life ... I find some songs still a bit childish in their form while from Up the Downstair the drum machine doesn't bother me at all because the production and the arrangements are much better controlled (moreover there are frankly very few differences between the original version and the one with the partial re-recording of the rhythm track by Gavin Harrison in 2004).
