Steven Wilson is probably the best progressive rock musician of the last 30 years- I have literally bought every vinyl album that he has made since the 1990’s - and his Porcupine Tree catalogue is superb. He has been involved with many other projects as well, plus his releases under his own name. Fabulous music and truly the best of British!!!

Excellent pick, and yeah -- a great 7/4 groove (Chris Maitland on drums back then.) The entire album is a super cool experience (I also recommend "Waiting (Phase 1)"). Btw, SW didn't destroy an iPod as an anti-pirating protest, it was more about how he was against the whole playlist/download culture that was taking hold. It was also about how listening to low-fi MP3s through earbuds was a crappy listening experience.

Waiting Phase 1 from Signfy got me hooked on Steven Wilson/PT back in the 90s. Believe it or not, I first heard it on a local DJ's radio show. I say that because I don't recall ever hearing Porcupine Tree on the radio again, except on that same DJ's show. Loved the song so much, I went out and found the album, which was not easy before the internet. Have been a fan ever since. There's a very deep and satisfying catalougue to get lost in here, with not only PT, but SW's other projects.
@FourBleats
@FourBleats 2 года назад
Wilson's destruction of iPods was less of a reaction to music piracy and more about the way it made music so disposable. If you've not already seen his Insurgentes movie, I'd recommend watching it as it contains the complete explanation. Before digital formats were popular, it required a bit more effort to get hold of new music, so people tended to spend more time with it. Piracy has been rife in the industry since cassette tape became widely available for domestic use, but it still required much more effort to record a copy of an album or a radio show compared to the way you can grab an artist's entire discography from the internet in seconds today. Having acquired the music is it equally easy to flick through a few seconds of each track without really listening to it with digital media players. He has also commented on the demise of album cover art and the concept of an album as something that should be consumed as a whole.

No Gavin Harrison here. It was Chris Maitland on drums who recorded with Porcupine Tree from the Moonloop EP in 1994 to the compilation album Recordings in 2001(who collect single B-sides, album leftovers and 3 tracks recorded specifically for this album). The first two Porcupine Tree albums On the Sunday of Life (1992) & Up the Downstair (1993), the single in two parts "Voyage 34" (1992+1993) & the Staircase Infinities EP (1994) do not have a drummer but a drum machine (although Gavin Harrison added drum parts in 2004 on the Up the Downstair 2005 Remastered/Remixed Edition as a replacement for the drum machine). From Up the Downstair I suggest you the track "Fadeaway" (in its original mix or not, it doesn't matter because the difference is not that important).

Thank you so much for reacting to this! I have reached out to you guys before, and like many on here, I am a HUGE PTree / Steven Wilson fan (Got my tickets to see PTree in DC in September!!! ). But I have had the privilege of seeing them a number of times over the last 20 years. My first time seeing them was, believe it or not, opening for Yes in 2002 at Constitution Hall in DC, and since then, have had the privilege of seeing both PTree live many times, as well as Stephen Wilson. I am 62, and although for many years Yes, Genesis and Pink Floyd were my favorite bands, Ptree / Stephen Wilson (hard as it is to say this) have taken their place at the of the heap. I listen to PTree and SW virtually (Im addicted - I admit it), and Dark Matter blew me away a number of years ago when I first heard it. One of the most sublime guitar solos I've ever heard and absolutely perfect for this song. Anyway, I greatly appreciate all that you guys do on this channel, and love you guys. You're so nice!!! I am a member out on Patreon as well, and will be upping my subscription to the $5 per month level. LOVE YOU GUYS!!! Keep doing what you're doing. Opeth might have inspired Steven Wilson's heavier side, but I think Wilson helped push Opeth's melodic and acoustic sides. Their album Damnation was on that end of things and was produced by Wilson. This for me was where Porcupine Tree truly came into their own IMHO and this and the subsequent 2 albums are my absolute favourite PT albums. It was also the period where I pretty much saw them live everytime they came to the Netherlands simply because the live shows were so good. For me PT became musically less interesting when Chris Maitland left and Gavin Harrison became the drummer. That musical change had nothing to do with this drum chair change but simply coincided with a change in musical direction by SW that I thought was a bit of a dead end. I only locked in again around The Raven album and then got back to his first 2 solo-albums (Insurgentes and Grace For Drowning).

This is a beautiful song of an era, when I didn't know yet of a band named Porcupine Tree. I actually was introduced by a friend, a guitarplayer himself .... that was around the time, after In Absentia was released. I followed PT and Steven Wilson from then on, but I have to say, I don't like everything he published .... but most of the stuff :)

My favorite PT album Signify. More like Pink Floyd and less like Tool when they became more metal in their riffs. This is the last song. An album that needs to be listened to in its entirety. Music for the mind. Chris Maitland on drums who is no slouch.

I know you all like jazz fuse of rock...Have you listened to the album 'Silk Degrees' from Boz Scaggs. This album is amazing and has a great variety of different songs. The hits of the record are well balanced with the other songs. There are some very 'slower songs' that blend in well with the more jazz pop inspired ones. I have listened to this when I was growing up with my Father. My favorites on the album (I love all the songs)...'Were all alone', 'Love me tomorrow', 'Harbor Lights'....however, the best songs most heard on the album are 'Lowdown', 'What Can I say', 'Low Down', 'Its Over' and (Were all alone, Harbor lights were hits too). Boz Scaggs wrote other songs, one of my favorites was on Urban Cowboy (movie) "Look What you Have done for me".... I hope you find this incredible jazz musician/singer. He began his career as a guitarist and a back-up singer for 'Steve Miller Band' on their first single "Living in the USA" before he left to do his own music. Anyway, 'Silk Degrees' is an album that is highly recognizable and I think you all will love it

Haha! I haven't listened to this album in awhile (I had gotten a tour shirt of the cover, on the "Deadwing Tour"). That dialogue in the hidden track (I love when bands do that) was sped-up and is from an OLD skit from the original SNL "Not Ready for Prime Time Players" (John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Gilda Radner, Chevy Chase etc.): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mG6SzKLNnaM.html (that's their original announcer Don Pardo as the voiceover). You can hear Steven has a rawer sound to his guitar, hasn't quite found that tone he was looking for I think until "In Absentia" and especially "Deadwing". As in an interview he was impressed with Dream Theater, and that in part (with Opeth) influenced their "new" direction after Signify . . . According to Wiki - _A number of other factors affected the change in sound beyond the change in record label. Many were key personnel changes and relationships. Most prominently was Wilson's rediscovering of heavy metal music through his fascination with Burzum and the book Lords of Chaos, which led him to listen to many extreme metal bands and finally the Swedish acts Meshuggah and Opeth whom he described as "the holy grail" of this new scene (both groups were thanked on In Absentia's sleeve notes). Furthermore, Wilson would end up meeting Mikael Åkerfeldt from Opeth, which occurred when the two were separately interviewed by an interviewer who had interviewed both of them. Impressed with their music, Wilson eventually agreed to produce the next Opeth album, Blackwater Park, which inspired Wilson to move Porcupine Tree in a more metal direction as well._ - Nick . . . just say NO to Electro-shock Therapy :p.

when it comes to Steven Wilson....I got so many suggestions...too many perhaps... today I want to say how much I like your videos, I've learned so much with you, and I'm born in 63, but like Nick I was a little bit too much in instrumental music...but now I know Steely Dan ! I like the way Steven Wilson do sometimes a "half album", maybe because he got much to say about something, and there was no room enough on the album, and I love for example : after Anesthetize, the album Nils Recurring, with songs like Normal, that is a great song with lot of guitars, and after Hand Cannot Erase : 41/2that comes with some athmospheric songs.... thanks again and nice trip !
