See how Nick (🇩🇪) and Lex (🇺🇸/🇲🇽) express their one and only experience they had with their first Steely Dan reaction: Peg and how it tainted their experience with the band. This was a request and we were so thankful for the opportunity to give them another listen!
Thank you for joining us! Feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments and don't forget to like and subscribe. We're open to suggestions/requests, so if you have one leave in the comments!

RE: PAUSING, EXPRESSIONS & AIR-INSTRUMENTS:
Please be mindful that we will pause (we prefer to react in the moment & to avoid copyright strike), we will react with enthusiasm, smiles, tears, conversation, exchanged looks and air-instruments. We are expressive by nature and are truly very quirky in every sense of the word. This is who we are and this is what we’ve got to offer. We understand it may not be for everyone, but here's to hoping you all enjoy and we absolutely love positive comments and feedback.
RE: LIVE VERSIONS vs STUDIO:
Check out why we haven't uploaded any live versions... yet. They will be coming, we promise!

So sad you received such negative comments. I too hadn’t heard of them for a long time. Not until I had music history at music school. But, anyway great to get my request fulfilled, I had a feeling you’d dig it 😄 They have plenty more awesome songs!

I saw Steely Dan a few years ago, before Walter Becker passed away. They did the song "Aja", pronounced "Asia", people who don't know the band have mispronounced it. Anyway, the live version, when they went to the instrumental section, became an outer body experience! Amazing! Nick, don't "not listen " to this band, it'll be a big mistake! And screw the negative comments. I know when someone is not fr from the US and visa versa, what's believed to be common knowledge, is taken for granted. Thats why travel and meeting people from different backgrounds is so important.

Your cheating yourselves by not listening to more Steely Dan. You two love music way too much to miss out on this great band. "Can't buy a Thrill" is indeed a great album - It's also a compilation of their hits, so I'm not surprised, but it isn't one of their studio albums. It is a good album however to get to know the group gradually before getting into the rest.

@@mikewritz - I stand corrected - As it took till I was 40 before I even began getting their albums I got this one very late after Aja [ my 1st ] + a number of others - Playing it seemed obvious this is a hits album. I've always thought that with so many great tracks & the track Ricky don't loose that number, being their 1st hit convinced me even more as I had a number of their singles on this album ....but yes - It was their debut. Thankyou for the info - I would not have known. It's too good for a debut. I always thought Countdown to Ecstasy was their 1st. Oop ! Regards.

The Caves of Altamira - is a song about "cavemen" who created art on the walls of caves in France, 40,000 years ago. They used the lines in the rock as the basis of muscles in animals - like bison. The point of the song - is that - even 40,000 years ago early man had an artistic desire within them to create images and showcase them. Before there was any Hollywood.

The album Aja was so well produced that stereo shops used to demonstrate their speakers using the album. For a couple of guitar solos sited for their taste, see session guitarist Larry Carlton's solos on "Kid Charlemagne" from the Royal Scam album. Rick Beato does a lesson on it. For a short (20 min.) primer on the band, see the RU-vid video "Steely Dan : More than just a band". This goes into the transition from being a touring band to the main writing pair with their pick of studio musicians. For an even better documentary see the Classic Albums treatment of Aja, which has the leaders using the multi track tapes to go over some of the songs, plus some band history. It also has interviews with some of the studio musicians about the recording methods of Becker and Fagen, the two remaining members. I guess the band appealed more to the college crowd than the hard rock fans.

"Kid Charlemagne" should be your next Steely Dan track, also from the same album "The Royal Scam." It has an amazing guitar solo played by Larry Carlton, voted by many as one of the greatest Ever. The attention to detail by perfectionists Donald Fagan & Walter Becker is just one of many reasons that set them apart from most other groups. 😃🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿👍

Steely Dan started out in 1972 as a band with a core lineup of 5 members (6 if you include the short-lived frontman, David Palmer). They stopped touring in 1974. The majority of the band members left that year but the 2 core members Donald Fagen and Walter Becker turned Steely Dan into a studio project using only session musicians on future albums Katy Lied (1975), The Royal Scam (1976), Aja (1977), and Gaucho (1980).

Steely Dan is a "one of." It creates it's own genre. Not rock, not jazz , something beautifully different. Two accomplished musicians who hired other studio musicians to play some parts of their songs (after their early years. ) Check out 'Babylon Sisters 'from their Gaucho Album. My favorite group of all time. They have at least 30 songs to die for. A LOT to explore here. - Dave, Vancouver, WA.

Excellent request and great reaction. For fans of Steely Dan, we appreciate that you’re willing to “suffer the slings and arrows” to review their songs. So sorry about negative comments 😔. Donald Fagen & Walter Becker (RIP) were Steely Dan and they prized production values to the point where they would have several musicians march through to try to add that certain riff or sound, sometimes just a few bars. Days when production could be expensive. I always thought they had a foot in Jazz and another in Pop Rock (with a healthy dose of R&B Funk). Donald Fagen talks about frequenting Jazz clubs in NYC when he was young (60’s) so that’s his heart. Then, reviewers started calling it “yacht rock.” But it’s radio-friendly yet smart musically. And there’s that unmistakable production! I like their sound, his voice, their lyrics ... & have them in rotation in my playlist. So thanks! 🤪 BTW, the caves of Altamira in Spain have incredible early cave art. 🦬

Michelle, why do you call it a great reaction after the reviewer compared Steely Dan to Chicago simply because they both have "horn sections'," then complained that the track wasn't longer after delivering screed about the Steely Dan fan base having the audacity to question his musical bona fides? I don't know about you but I always think Chicago and Al Stewart when I'm listening to "Parker's Band" or "Don't Take me Alive."

@@sooutrageous007 Hi Steven. I appreciate your opinion. I love watching Nick & Lex react to all kinds of music. Even Rolling Stone professional music reviews make comparisons that someone else might disagree with. I can understand how they’re making comparisons with the music they know. That’s what you do with unfamiliar artists - try to fit them in wherever. I certainly wouldn’t want this nice couple to stop playing Steely Dan. And really, they are like no other band, right?! So, it’s hard to draw comparisons. Anyway, thanks for reaching out to me. I suppose you are a Steely Dan fan like I am. They are in my regular playlist rotation. I’ve even watched the Dukes of September concerts with Donald Fagen, Boz Scaggs, Michael McDonald, etc. Check them out if you haven’t. I like how Steely Dan’s music uses less reverb. It gives their music a clean sound where you can hear every instrument more clearly than many other bands. Back in the day, audiophiles used to take Steely Dan records into electronic stores to test the speakers. There’s a lot of ear candy to be heard in their music especially if you have a good sound system or headphones.

That was so much fun watching you guys get into that. You’ve only scratched the surface. They were two musical greats that hated touring, therefore very little of it. They were studio geniuses that the best of the studio musicians at the time were honored to participate in their projects. Steve Gadd, Larry Carlton, Lee Ritenour, Elliot Randall, Charles Rainey, Victor Feldman, Dean Parks, Denny Diaz, Jay Graydon, Bernard Purdy and on and on. Sorry for the ramble. Much more for you to discover of Steely Dan - enjoy!

The entire Royal Scam album is tremendous. Katy Lied, Aja, Gaucho All great. Two Against Nature and Everything Must go in their second life are very good. Donald Fagen and Walter Becker allegedly thought about brining Holdsworth into the studio, but it never happened. That's John Klemmer on sax here. They used a ton of jazz musicians.

Thank you so much for helping me remember what I loved about this music when I was a kid. (Class of 1976) I think what I like most about your channel is your reaction to each other as you discover the music. What you do reminds me of those times when I give my granddaughter a wonderful book that she has never read; and the she comes back irrevocably changed. BTW... There will always be haters and critics if you put yourself out there. That's what "delete" is for. You are doing great work, having some laughs and bringing a lot of joy. Peace!

Nick & Lex, no need to respond to people's criticism. It is just great your channel has such a diversity of music that you bring to people who want to listen to your generation's take on it. I am fortunate to have seen Steely Dan in concert and have listened to them since they started out. They were a combination of jazz-influenced blues and rock band, for want of a better description, but they weren't mainstream. They didn't set out to make hit records and Donald Fagen & Walter Becker only wanted to create the purest of sounds and complex melodies. This they achieved in many of their albums and only now can you appreciate their contribution to music. So, continue your exploration of Steely Dan. NB. And, for you Nick, I have been an Allan Holdsworth fan for a long time and have his last recordings with Virgil Donati "Tales from the Vault". And, if you haven't already done so, join the unReal Allan Holdsworth Facebook group to get really connected with many musicians who played or who appreciate his music.

Steely Dan’s regard for production values was so strong in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s that many bands would play SD music through the auditorium, arena or stadium pre-show as folks are finding their seats.

So glad you two have discovered Steely Dan. That band was right there with me in my teen years in the '70s as I got into Genesis, Yes, ELP, Frank Zappa et al. Besides listening to EVERYTHING they recorded, I recommend "Your Gold Teeth" from 1973's "Countdown To Ecstasy" and "Your Gold Teeth II" from 1975's "Katy Lied" as great examples of the jazz/rock fusion the Dan are renowned for. Keep up the great work on your channel. I'm really enjoying your journey!

This is the third reaction to Steely Dan tunes by you two that I have watched, with enjoyment. I must say, you are so lucky to have sampled three of the most completely out of the box but totally in the groove cuts they performed. Got a reaction request, though you may have already know it: "Protection" by Massive Attack. Keep up the fun stuff

An overlooked aspect of Steely Dan is the lyrics. The lyrics are just as complex as the instrumentation. They're very profound and contain deep occult and historical content. They know secrets about our world that only a few are aware of. This particular song refers to ancient cave paintings which were designed to serve as moving pictures. They would paint a few different positions of an animal, for example, and as the fire would flicker, the lighting would accentuate the different angles and positions of the paintings, thus giving a similar effect to flipping cartoon pages, one frame at a time. Hence, "before the fall, when they wrote it on the wall, when there wasn't even any hollywood"... motion pictures.... Steely Dan knew about this long before it became something noteworthy in the anthropological society. The Royal Scam is full of hints about how our world really works, and the obsure subject matter often repels the logical mind, but it's valuable information if you know how to decipher the brilliant lyrics of Fagen and Becker.

I am from Germany and became a huge Steely Dan fan when I stumbled upon them by accident in the late 2000s. Literally nobody of my friends, relatives etc. knew about this band but we all became addicted. We even had a Steely Dan cover band in school, listened to nothing else for a few years. In Germany they never got released so in the pre-internet era there was virtually no way to getting to know them.

Don't let negative comments bring you down... and especially, don't let bitter people refrain you from enjoying the great music of Steely Dan! As a Mexican around your age, I can back up what you say; SD doesn't get played in the radio here; at least not in the 90s and 00s in Classic Rock stations. In fact, I only gave them a try just 10 years ago with two albums (Aja and The Royal Scam) which I love and it was until last year with the quarantine that I started looking to the rest of their discography and right now they are my second favorite band all-time!! And you may have probably heard a couple of SD songs, just without knowing it was them (proably Do It Again and Rikki Don't Lose That Number). Anyway, long message short, don't give up on Steely Dan, on or off-camera. Of course, there will be many people glad if you share your first reactions with us. =)

When you realize most of the "fans' here are from the seventies when we were early twenties, that was 50 years ago! I am a grandpa, and maybe soon great grandpa....but man we had some fine music in our day. Watching someone "get it" and get caught up in the Steely Dan music is entertaining. I took records, tapes, and 8 tracks of Steely Dan everywhere. I also lugged around many John Prine tunes, the same kind of music writing, from the heart and mind, but a different genre. Steely Dan is hard to fairly compare with any other band because they have such a unique sound and style. Plus, Donald Fagen is "the" voice of Steely Dan. When he took over vocals, he was unmatched in the delivery of the song and became as embedded as the riffs a of Larry Carlton and the other masters of the craft that worked with them. Very happy to see this reaction, looking forward to more.

Gotta keep listening to Steely Dan. They are my favorite band, distant second is Pink Floyd. Everybody has their favorite tracks and it’s never the same for any two fans, that’s how unique they are and they really don’t make a bad song. That being said, my steely playlist has roughly 50 songs I play before Caves Of Altimara so keep diving in.

Start with their early hits: Do It Again, Reelin' In The Years, Rikki Don't Lose That Number. They were the first things we heard in the 70s, and you can get to know them the way most people did. But every song is good.
