The Chocolate museum was originally part of the Cologne Chocolate company "Stollwerck", but the company was sold and the museum partnered with Lindt.

Sesamestreet (Sesamstr) was in Germany too (wenn I was a kid). The „Sendung mit der Maus“ was a stable Sunday mornings. ;)

You can search for „Die Sendung mit dem Elefanten“ hier on YT. It’s the toddler version of the famous „Die Sendung mit der Maus“. My 2,5yo daughter looooves to watch it. We do have Sesame Street (Sesamstraße) in Germany as well and it is also well known. I’d consider Die Maus more educational (but yet also very entertaining) than Sesamstraße, to be honest.

Lindt&Sprüngli, the Swiss company, is just partner of the chocolate museum founded by Hans Imhoff, longtime owner of the former Stollwerck chocolate company. The chocolate fountain was invented by Stollwerck/Imhoff.

I watch a lot of Sendung mit der Maus, especially the older ones without Herr Caspers who is a little bit much for me. (He makes the show PG13, imo.) Just yesterday in my medic Fortbildung "Funkgeraete" (the radios police/fire/rescuers use) they made us watch Die Maus episode about how cell phone base stations perform handovers when you use your cell phone between cells. Well done!

Fun fact: The owner of the company later called 4711 was an employee at the company which actually invented the eau de cologne (first named aqua mirabilis/wonder water by its creator). Legend has it that the formula was given to him as a wedding present and he established his own company. Due to excellent marketing this one became a big brand, wheras the original is almost unknown. You can still visit the company "Farina" in the heart of the old town next to the Wallraff Richartz Museum.

What is certain, however, is that Wilhelm Mülhens had lived in Cologne's Glockengasse since 1797 and had been selling "Kölnisch Wasser" since 1799. The house in Glockengasse was assigned the house number '4711' at the time of the French occupation (Napoleon wars), which became the company's trademark in the 1830s. At first, the "aqua mirabilis" was not sold as a perfume, but as a remedy to be used internally. In 1810, however, Napoleon Bonaparte issued a decree that required the disclosure of all secret recipes for internally used remedies. From then on, in order to avoid the obligation to publish, Wilhelm Mülhens advertised his Cologne water as an “agent that can be used externally”, which meant that it was marketed for the first time as a scented water as we know it today. Even today's manufacturers consider it not just a fragrance, but also an "aroma therapeutic" to be inhaled "so the essential oils can work."

Next time in Bonn, you should visit Beethoven's birth house. Just an fyi, the cacao content in European chocolate is 20% or higher, versus 10% in the U.S. ( i.e. Hersheys). European chocolate is also smoother and creamier. U.S. chocolate also contains butyric acid, to make it last longer on the shelves and gives it a slightly tangy flavor. As a side note, that butyric acid can also be found in vomit. Ever since I've heard about that, I can no longer eat U.S. chocolate. Next time you eat a Hershey chocolate, you will be able to tell. Luckily we have a German store nearby and if I have a hankering for chocolate, I get the German chocolate there.

2 pieces of information you might not have: In Germany there are only 19 skyscrapers (buildings with a height of 150 m or more). 18 are in Frankfurt and one in Bonn (the post tower 14:15). Haribo will soon open its first manufacturing facility in the United States (Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin). Then the offer in the USA will probably be larger and cheaper.

I lived for 10 years in Cologne. Amazing city. Try finding aerial views of Cologne in 1945. You'll be shocked at the degree of devastation. I still to this day do not understand how the Germans rebuilt their country. Berlin, Hamburg and many other German cities and towns were razed to the ground by Allied bombing. When I first arrived in Cologne in 1969 there was still a lot of damage apparent from the war. Next time you visit Cologne, try the local speciality Eisbein mit Sauerkraut.

Greetings from Cologne! 👋🍻 The next time you come here, I'd recommend to visit the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum. It's a museum for cultural anthropology with a comparative perspective which has won several museum prices for its modern concept which is also attractive for kids with special offers. When you really want to visit a Brauhaus here, be aware that also the different sorts of Kölsch can taste very different - although many other Germans would call all of them tasting like cow's piss... 😉 As far as I know on the other side of the Rhine river in Köln-Kalk there is the oldest Kölsch-brewery (Sünner) with also a little nice beer garden. And besides beer they also sell different sorts of interesting self-destilled (hard) liquor... Btw the "chocolate factory" is a museum! 😉 A Lindt-factory is located in Aachen next to the border to the Netherlands and roundabout 75 kilometers away from Cologne, where they also sell to customers and Aachen is - despite its history - also a nice place to visit.

The Drachenburg Castle isn't very old. It was erected in the 1880s in the style of historicism. If you want to see the ruins of the old Drachenfels Castle from the 12th century, you must go higher up the hill. And if the weather is very clear, you can even see Cologne Cathedral from up there.

Funny that 4711 reminds you of your grandmother’s perfume. My grandmother actually used 4711 as her cologne and I therefore also associate the smell of it more with older people than with the younger generation. 😊 And after visiting the Haribo outlet you probably know more about the Haribo assortmentt than 90% of Germans. I never heard of those „Salzbrezeln“ from Haribo. 😉

it´s funny how you associate the scent of 4711 with your grandma. It it totaly possible that it was around her house. Many older ladys i know where carrying a small bottle of 4711 around in their handbag. It´s the same for me as a man when i smell Old Spice or Irish Moss or Pitralon. These are the smells reminding me of my Grandfathers and i associate these scents with the good old times. But both of these Products have proven to stand the test of times as even we the younger generation know them and use them.

Just came back from Cologne for an exhibition at the Cologne Fair. It was a nice relaxed city & I’m happy to see residents & not just tourists even in the city center. But not my favorite city to be honest. There’s really nothing else to see than the Cologne Cathedral & Hohenzollern Bridge. In terms of chocolate factory, I prefer the ones in Belgium. And for some reason, I had a hard time making friends with Germans. At first I thought maybe because I’m Asian? But when I went to Belgium, it’s totally different. Belgians are much friendlier. I don’t think it’s because of language barrier because both are bilingual in English. In terms of shopping district, I’ve seen a lot better in other cities in Europe. If it’s not because of the trade fair, I won’t be staying for 3 days. A day trip or an overnight stay would be enough for Cologne. But I enjoyed walking & biking around. But again, not as much when I did in Belgium (especially Ghent) & Amsterdam.

What many may not know is that probably the most well-known product of 4711 the "Kölnisch Wasser" is actually not a perfume at all. It is rather a refreshing "water". This fragrance I also know from childhood, where the "Kölnisch Wasser" was a daily used product in all walks of life. I love to cycle through Germany and Europe as a bikepacker and have rediscovered the 4711 Eau de Cologne for me. When the temperatures in the summer drives the sweat on my forehead, I take a paper handkerchief and wipe my face and neck with it. The refreshing effect comes immediately and works wonders the essential ingredients cool down. Another very good application is cleaning the hands when I'm on the road. Whether sticky fingers from the food intake or greasy hands from the bike chain. A little "cologne" in a paper towel and I can clean my hands without wasting my precious drinking water. For me, 4711 belongs since a few years necessarily in my luggage, just like back then with our parents😊

Haribo is 500meters from where i grew up and still my mum's house is situated. In my youth we used to collect chestnuts and bring them to Haribo and got Haribo Sweets as exchange... the owner HAns RIegel from BOnn (HA RI BO) got a wildlife park near Bonn and needed the chestnuts for the deers... September was an important month... Bonn got others great sites and interesting history to see as it was the west german capital for decades. So if you ever meet your "Eifel-Friends" again, you should have a tour around Bonn and the Siebengebirge. Worthwhile. PS Drachenburg is an 19th century "new castle" and not very old, but still an interesting place to visit, though i prefer the view from the Drachenfels.

Can someone tell me if Haribo makes a sugar-free variety in Germany? I can only seem to find it in America but unfortunately I live in Germany, and .....about 20 minutes from Solingen. Why does America have sugar free Haribo, and when I go to Aldi, it's all sugar-full?
@sollte1239

I read about the sugar-free variety in the internet. Most likely Haribo is not allowed to sell the sugar free gummies in the EU because the stuff they use instead of sugar is most likely forbidden in large scales in the EU

Cologne unfortunately isn't much of a pretty city at all (first severely destroyed during World War II, then rebuilt the most "unpretentious" way imaginable). And yet there are more hymns to Cologne than to any other city- Cologne's charme lies mainly in its cheerul, tolerant, open-minded and friendly mentality. Cologners are probably the most laid-back and also chattiest people in Germany

They're still undecided on who did more damage to the town. WWII or the architects that (re)built the city ;)

Cologne Cathedral was also for a few years the highest building on the planet. Impressive are also the big bells. With one of the largest free-swinging bells. Albeit this one rings only a few times a year. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jbtqJWZT_EI.html

@@OurStorytoTell It's really difficult to record the *real* sound. Albeit 10 years old the sound recording of the below video is better. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6Znn5eZBlXU.html I also like the sound of the 2nd largest bell "Pretiosa" (the precious) very much. Even more amazing - this bell is from 1448.

Yea way better. The lower rhine area is the best and you get the best beer in the world 😎 except the best of the best comes from Korschenbroich, a small city right next to Mönchengladbach - home of the famous soccer club Borussia or 'A German Team' some castles (one has wild peacocks in the castle's garden) and one of the most important contemporary art museums. So you have to take a small trip to the left rhine side.

American chocolate tastes sour. But European chocolate is sweet. Americans use cheap sour changed milk for their chocolate, in Europe good milk and expensive raw materials are used. It has to do with the raw milk laws in US. Maybe American chocolate is cheaper to produce than European chocolate, but because European chocolate tastes better, we can pay a price and eat more of it. The German factory was "Stollwerck". A little later, when the museum was founded, the company was sold. The museum was already separated from the company and remained.

Cologne Cathedral has a secret. The construction site was not finished for a long time due to lack of funds. Until then, in the 1900s, money could finally be raised again. But by then the original builders were all dead. So the Cologne Cathedral got an iron roof truss. But this one is hidden. The cathedral will never be finished. Whenever the repairs around are finished, it starts all over again.

After the war, the WDR station started again as the 2nd channel of the NWDR with a British broadcasting license. The NWDR supplied Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia and Berlin. When it was possible, the NWDR was split into NDR (Lower Saxony and later Mecklenburg-West Pomerania), WDR (North Rhine-Westphalia) and SFB (Broatcast free Berlin). The SFB later became the RBB (Berlin Brandenburg). The WDR produces 11 local programs daily, which deviate from the main program for one hour. In addition to the local programs, the WDR is involved in the main program "Das Erste". Own films are produced too. It not only produces radio, television and internet but also organizes music events of all kinds. The WDR has its own satellite uplink and is no longer dependent on the uplink in Luxembourg.

4711, this number was assigned by French soldiers to the house of the perfumery. A brand today. But don't confuse that with 0815. DIN 0815, the usually rifle of the Germans in WW1. Today Usually is called 0815
