The movie was a mess ... because the dialogue was terrible and Tony had no character. RDJ and Favreau re-wrote the dialogue and created the charismatic Tony Stark ... which started it all.
@@Muck006 From my understanding, the comic character didn't have much of a personality and that was why the script was such a mess to begin with, but RDJ showed one in his auditions and that was why he got the part in the end. Another thing people should know is that this movie was not intended to kick off a huge franchise. It was supposed to be a stand-alone flick that would _maybe_ fit into something bigger but could just as well be discarded as irrelevant or non-canon. But then it turned out good, hence the Nick Fury appearance at the end.
3 tips for your MCU journey: 1. Watch it in release order. 2. Watch out for Stan Lee. He got a cameo in every MCU movie. 3. Watch every after credit scene, except of the trailer after Captain America: The First Avenger. It's too much of a spoiler for the first Avenger movie.
I remember when this movie came out in 2008. We were right in the middle of Nolan's Batman trilogy. The rumor among the comic book nerds was DC's going to do a Justice League movie helmed by Nolan. But the after credit scene with Samuel Jackson talking about Avengers came out of nowhere and we all lost our collective minds. Good times, good times.
And when DC was approached and asked essentially "Looks like Marvel is going to build up to a team movie, are you going to do the same?" The answer was no- they had no interest in doing a team movie, and their heroes were so 'big' that they did not need to team up at all. What changed DC's minds? Avengers making over a billion at the box office.
Which one came first though, Iron Man or Tobey McGuire Spiderman? I can't remember.. they probably don't count the earlier Spiderman movies in the MCU run though since the Avengers movies went with the Tom Holland thing but the first 2 Tobey Spiderman movies were 10/10.
It’s refreshing to watch just pure movie fans and not pop culture fans. Nothing wrong with them but there are enough channels to go around. I don’t think they care to finish the MCU stuff which is ok 😊
Wow. The journey you both are about to embark on is wild. To answer your question they had all the MCU movies planned out in “Phases” (phase 1,2,3 etc). Where one would be connected in some ways a major connection or minor or none at all at first but will connect via another movie. That’s why it’s so important to watch the end credits for bonus scenes for hints to what or who is coming next. The beauty is you don’t have to wait like 11 years to watch them all like we did. Happy viewing! When you get to Avengers Endgame it will all be worth it.
Kevin Feige had a vision to create an interconnected universe that leads to a grand finale but everything was riding on the success of IronMan which was obviously successful you guys are in for a wild ride for the rest of the MCU enjoy!
Ironman started originally during the Vietnam War, similar plot to the movie but in the jungle. Making the hero a weapon manufacturer during that time was super ambitious with the antiwar sentiment. Throw in the list of character defects and you start in on the more humanized heroes era.
Kevin Feige is the man to thank. He kept the movies on-message and coordinated. Pity he was wasn't in charge of the Star Wars sesquels; we probably would have seen a much better trilogy.
"You see where you're going? Let's focus on how you get there." Their plan was to make each movie as good as they could, they took out a risky loan to make these movies so they were trying to avoid going bankrupt, and hopefully they could make an Avengers movie. Avengers (2012) completely changed the Cinema landscape, so they were able to plan further ahead after that.
Congratulations you have just met the GOAT !!! Also the difference between Bruce Wayne and Tony Stark is that Tony is building his own toys not asking others to do it for him.
This was MARVELS first inhouse production, they where not owned by Disney yet. The movie was a huge gamble on MARVELs side. They did not know if they ever would make a second movie, let alone the huge franchise that came out of it, but they had an incling that this might hit home, so they decided to set it up. If it bombed, it wouldn't matter but if it hits it works to their benefit. I remember vividly watching this movie in the cinema, it was unbeliveable cool, it hit different than other previous super hero movies and I was immediatly hooked. To this day, this is still one of my favorit super hero movies. The soundtrack is phantastic, to this day, 15 years later, whenever I hear the intro to Back in Black (AC/DC) I see the opening scene of this movie in the theatre of my mind, the HUMVEEs coming down the desert road, so iconic.
Well guys. First time here and the only thing i will say is: you guys are about to enter to a wonderful journey you'll not regret. Btw i loove how on point you guys are with the details and your notes ect❤ watch them on release order so you dont get spoilers from the post credit scenes. Lets go guys! Im so glad you guys like it, This is the MCU genesis! Grettings from Puerto Rico🇵🇷
Cali, your reaction when he showed up in the suit and shot off the mini rockets from his shoulders was the same reaction my buddy and I had in theaters back in 08. Our jaws dropped lol.
The arm-spread pose is a Redeemer pose, but it is also the pose of the Vitruvian Man, as you have in the background of your room. It is an idealized person.
Great reaction, glad you enjoyed it. The comic heroes of the 1960s appeared in each others' comic books as co-creator and writer Stan Lee wanted them to inhabit a shared universe, which has grown and grown over the years. That's what makes this film journey so rewarding, as you become very emotionally invested in the characters as they are gradually introduced and interact with one another.. Because this film was a success they were able to fulfil the promise of "The Avenger Initiative" teased in the end-credits scene. I hope you enjoy the series. Iron Man to Endgame tells a great story.
I love how much depth you both were able to analyze this movie. It honestly brought me back to the very first time I watched it too! It's a long way to go but knowing what I know now, I'm anxiously waiting for you to watch and react to the rest of the MCU and especially to Endgame. Cheers to you both!
I seem to remember director Jon Favreau saying that when he saw the scenes involving the suit, he could not tell the difference between the CGI and the actual suit they built (which was quite heavy and they used less of it in subsequent films)
Tell me you don't feel like watching more of this after seeing that?... Yeah, that's how we felt when we first saw this at the movies. There's been many super-hero series of films (X-Men, Spiderman, The AMAZING Spiderman, etc...), but the fun part of this series (The MCU), is that they introduce us to a plethora of new characters (most with their own movie), then start doing cross-overs, cameos, and reference one another. Then finally having entire films with ALL of them in them. Plus, most are incredibly well made. Also add post-credit scenes (sometimes multiple) that make it worth staying in your seats after the movie ends, and you've got a fantastic recipe for success. ALWAYS be on the lookout for a Stan Lee cameo in almost EVERY marvel movie. Good for you guys; you'll love this journey.
And yes... Release order is always the way to go for first time viewing. Wikiedia has a complete list. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Marvel_Cinematic_Universe_films
I would love for you guys to react to the sherlock holmes movies with RDJ. Me and a huge number of other people think that's another role that perfectly fits his personality, and the movies are really underrated tbh. (The second movie is actually better than the first one).
There been other Marvel characters with thier own movies done but it never got the wheel moving.. Like 98 "Blade", 03 "Daredevil", 03 "Hulk" and others.. I think it was the next gen that made it popular with comic con getting bigger and bigger every year.
I’m SO unbelievably proud of you for looking up Samuel Jackson’s character name!!! SO many reactors keep acting like they don’t have a phone/computer and say, “let us/me know the answer to my question in the comments.”😅
First time watcher of your channel and now new subscriber. If you’re doing the MCU, I’m in. Love the fact you REALLY discuss afterwords. Like an hour of talk after…WOW!!! Let’s get onto the next one.
I love watching your excitement of seeing the Mark 1 and then the Mark 2 Armour. You have an exciting journey ahead of you and I can't wait to watch along with you.
When analyzing classic superhero comics and films, one should understand that they all address moral issues, the most important of which is the struggle to be wise and responsible with great power. Peter Parker’s Uncle Ben said it best: “With great power comes great responsibility.” Every MCU film addresses the issue of power and megalomania and personal hubris. The super technology is great, the fight scenes are great, but these films always bring the audience back to the moral issues and dilemmas.
I've seen this movie multiple times and I never noticed that Pepper was leaving her hair down for Tony. I guess only a woman would notice a detail like that. Good job on the reaction. Subbed!
Bruce Wayne said it best in The Dark Night Rises. He told the cop named Robin that the mask isn’t for him the mask and protecting his identity is for his loved ones to keep them safe. That’s a problem when you give away your identity, it’s basically impossible to believe that no villain gets them when they are at home chilling or in Iron Man’s case Tony stark jogging daily in Central Park.
The Infinity Saga (Iron Man through Spiderman: Far from Home) is the most impressive accomplishment in film. 23 movies. That might sound like a lot, but by the time it's over, you'll be wanting to see even more (which they are still doing... 32, I think, and counting). None of them are bad, but once you get to movie #9 (Captain America 2), everything thereafter is A++ storytelling, directing, acting, and effects. If you guys decide to watch them all, it will be worth it. I guarantee it.
Welcome to the MCU! Enjoy the ride! (Stay for the end credits in every film.) In the original comic, Tony escapes a Vietnamese POW camp. The Mark I armor essentially looks like it does in the film.
ALL the films and shows tie together so well. It's truly amazing what they accomplished with this universe. You're gonna be sooo invested and it does not disappoint.
Welcome to the Marvel family. “Over analyzing” is part of me as well, it comes in handy for trying to guess what happens next, though maybe not for awhile. The long term movie plan was mostly sketched out by multiple decades of comics. Stan Lee was the last surviving creator of most of the characters in them and was a producer and character/story consultant. He also has a cameo in every Marvel movie made. Have fun on your journey . 💕😉👍
As for the Ten Rings guy wearing a prominent ring ... probably that is to symbolize that he is one of the ten terrorist leaders? In the comics there was an Iron Man villain known as the Mandarin, and he was a very weird concept character who wore ten alien rings, each of which gave him a different "blast" type power, like an ice ring, a fire ring ... you get the idea. They tried to break down that character and rationalize him, turning him into a terrorist group called the Ten Rings. As for the spare suit, Rhodey couldn't use it because it didn't have a power plant. As for planning it all out, they had some general ideas, but things changed as they went along. This movie is an amalgam of a couple of key stories in the Iron Man canon, beginning with an update of the 1960s origin.
I am so happy seeing more reactions like this, And at the same time envious, I waited years for the next Marvel movies and now for the first time to watch and react to these movies can just do binge watch them 😅 but I know fo sure yall going to love them movies, Im happy watching yall react 🤗
They have different phases always planned out, so they had already had a continuous story for the first 6 movies. There are also trailers/presentations for the different phases for example "Marvel Studios Celebrates The Movies" which was the trailer for Phase 4, you should react to it once you finished Phase 3. :)
As a kid growing up one of my favorite comicbooks was Iron Man. The "Batman of Marvel Comics". But Tony Stark was fun than Bruce Wayne. 😂 *I'm also a big fan of Batman. "Demon in a Bottle" comic remains one of my all-time favorites. Marvel Comics dealt with adult issues. "Alcoholism". Robert Downey Jr. was perfect casting to portray Tony Stark. Iron Man started the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Stumbled across your channel recently (can't remember what reaction atm), but I enjoy you two. I'll enjoy watching you become MCU junkies and going through all the things and feels like the rest of us. Much love and be safe. P.s. You two are great and she's lovely. You both chose well.
I just join this journey with you and subscribed to you. Can't wait till you catch up to all the MCU. Some are great some are so-so. But it how its intertwined is what hooked me (accept for the TV series, I don't have time to binge let alone to start. So i can't give an input to WandaVision, Loki and She Hulk etc²) Keep up the good work.
This was the first time Marvel built their own movie studio. Until them movies with Marvel characters where made by others, mostly Sony, who had the copyright to X-men, Spiderman and other IP's. Marvel Studios picked a less known character in Iron Man as a first project. There was a comic that inspired this new generation of Marvel movies called "The Ultimates" which was a re-imagining on the original comics. Nick Fury up to that time was a white guy who had ascended through military ranks to become the Director of SHIELD. But in the Ultimates, Artist Brian Hitch used the likeness of Samuel L. Jackson for Nick Fury. So the after-credit scene was particularly cool for those who were familiar with this popular comic. After the movie became a big success and started the modern Marvel Universe, they were acquired by Disney.
the weapon at the start that made all the bullet holes all at once is an anti-personnel mine called a M18A1 Claymore. its basically a shaped charge of plastic explosive sitting behind 702 ball bearings. the weapon can be aimed and fired in either a booby trap or command detonation configurations. its very effective weapon.
It was so disappointing that Yinsen did not get mentioned by Tony Stark in any way or form. He could have named the first Iron Man suit Yinsen-1 or Tony could have thanked him in one of his last speeches in the movie. Or even open a non weapons department and name it Yinsen Peace Division. But anyway good review as usual and this is still the best of all MCU movies. I loved everything about this movie except the forgetting Yinsen and how important he was to the Iron Man beginnings.
When the first Iron Man came out they said the movies were going to be interconnected but it didn't really hit home until the next movie how big they were planning.
I don't know exactly where it would be best to ask this, but you two need to watch "A Ghost Story", I believe it is a film that overcomes so many important barriers to be talked about and analyzed as human beings. And your conversation is incredible, I'm sure it would be a unique experience for you two and for us who will be watching and chatting in the comments If any of you reading this have direct access to them and can ask, that would be amazing Thank you for everything, love here from Brazil
I believe the terrorist leader's ring is a sign of 'The 10 Rings' which is referenced in passing at the start of the film. There is a 10 Rings movie that discusses this organization and opens up the possibility of another series.
Hi, MGR. Moonknight was Marvel's answer to Batman. Originally, he was a super rich, playboy superhero. He would rely on three personas to further his hero gig, a cab driver, a street bum/homeless, and his rich self. The Moonknight title went thru many relaunches due to low sales but had a cult following. The new TV series is really well done (so good). The Hero allegory is ages old and often pulls on other famous works especially when dealing with extreme personalities (ie: Tony's ego, with some biblical references). Cheers.
Great reaction! A lot of people compare Tony Stark and Bruce Wayne, and rightly so. The big difference, which I think makes Iron-Man/Tony such an endearing and "fun to watch" character, is that the "care-free playboy" is an act that Batman puts on when he's "pretending" to be Bruce Wayne, where as the "care-free playboy" is who Tony really is, and the Iron-Man armor is the identity that he puts on when being a hero. (Hence the fact that he doesn't have a secret identity.)
When he was trying to think of the "start" or "beginning" of the characters story I was attempting to will it to you that I believe the words you are looking for is "Origin Story"
There was a GENERAL idea where the MCU was going, but they did it in phases, a few films at once so that if it wasn't doing enough box office to keep on indefinitely, viewers could at least see the plan. Naturally, once it was clear these were making $$$, that was less of a concern. There is CGI in the film but it looks so realistic because it is a FILM; the switch to digital video is still a few years away. And yes, they did build all the Iron Man suits…they just don't fly. VERY good point that Yinsen probably knew it was Tony's weapons that had killed his family. (After all, Stark's name is on the boxes.) And yet he still gives Tony that second chance at life, to do good to make up for all the blood on his hands. No doubt Rhodey'd love a suit…but they are all out of power packs at the moment. Obadiah has the modern one, and Tony's using the one Pepper kept out of sentiment. Obadiah survives the freezing because Tony cracks his ice when he bops Obie over the head so that Tony can get free. The cracked ice comes off in time for Obie's suit to reboot and save him, just as happened to Tony before. It's never explicitly stated (not even in the comics), but I'm fairly certain that they just came up with S.H.I.E.L.D. as an acronym and then made the name to suit it. Coulson was probably using the full name to double-talk Pepper and Tony so that they wouldn't spread word of the agency's existence all over the place. (S.H.I.E.L.D. may not be a secret, per se, but they seem to want to keep a low profile.) Christine sure isn't keeping a low profile…she's the only one wearing light-colored clothes at that final press conference. Of course, that makes it easier for us to pick her out in the crowd shots. Thanks, Jon Favreau (director)! I like Christine, she doesn't put up with Tony's crap. ("That's a great line… coming from the guy selling the sticks.") Sure, she hops in the sack with him, but how many chances to you get to snag a Tony Stark? And it's clear she wants to reform him, be his conscience. (Props to her for keeping at it even after Tony has Pepper "take out the trash.") And it's her persistence that pushes Tony into confessing "I am Iron Man"… …which was a really key decision by Marvel, breaking the "secret identity" paradigm in ways that had never been done before. (In the comics, Tony had spent 40+ years using his money and his technology to keep the secret; there is a voice distorter in the suit and Tony would use robots and holograms and stuff to make it look as though he and Iron Man were in the same place together, so it CAN'T be him in the suit, right?) But they decided that the version of Tony that RDJ plays so well (there are a few character tweaks from the comics version) just wouldn't be able to play those games. BTW, the male reporter in the press conference scenes is played by Patrick O'Connell. You don't know Patrick, but you know his daughter…Billie Eilish. (Billie would have been about six when this was filmed. I wonder if she came to the set?) Yes, Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury) was notorious for playing villains, like Jules from "Pulp Fiction". (The character in that film named "Wallace" is Jules's boss, Marcellus Wallace [played by Ving Rhames]). I watched another of Sam's films and the reactor asked "does he [SLJ] ever play a good guy?" and I thought of Nick and smiled. Keep smiling and enjoy the ride! On to "The Incredible Hulk"!
They did not have it all planned out from the beginning. A prime example of that is that S.H.I.E.L.D. was called that for a long time in universe. They have done a good job avoiding a lot of continuity errors, though. Also, at this time Marvel didn't have rights to make films for a lot of their own characters (like Spider-Man (Sony) and The Hulk (Universal)), so they started with a less popular hero, and it just caught fire.
MCU Guidelines: 1) Release order is best for first reactions. Chronological order is fun on rewatch. 2) Stan Lee makes a cameo in almost every Marvel film until his passing. 3) The output of Marvel Studios is the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Just like Marvel Comics, all titles exist in the same, connected, universe. While some things are planned out (characters meeting together in an upcoming film, or long term story points), Marvel Studios more than not allows directors freedom to interpret the script the Studio provides, or the director provides. There are limits. So, the entirety of the vision isn’t planned out. Specific milestones are. The rest develops organically within each film in collaboration with the directors. :-)
THE MCU They do that as they went with the vision of KEVIN FEIGE, the IRONMAN movie doesn't have a finish script when they started filming and they improvised along the way.
Tony still needs money to buy some things if he wants to make a suit. Of course he will do it himself because doing it himself will help him understand his own armor better than letting someone else do it. if there are enough stuff even without money, he still can build a small suit for his own
51:45 WHAT WAS SHE SUPPOSED TO DO!? LOL was she supposed to go, " oh yes, kind robot, causing destruction, let me sit right here and risk these children dieing just so you can sit the car down comfortably. " You forget she doesn't know that's human in there.😂 Come on now. You'd be a horrible parent if you didn't do that.
The success of phase 1 of MCU was, his characters were "realistic" around our real world without being boring but charismatic and even funny (with measurement) and were CONSTRUCTED PATIENTLY with the pass of the movies. DCEU did almost well the first thing but failed on some cartoonish stuff and failed horribly on constructing their characters. They jumped into "universe" without even knowing his Batman properly, one of the mains of Justice League Just because "we need to compete with marvel asap" no, u don't need. Until Thanos, Marvel did I'd marvelous with some mistakes ❤️
