I really didn't like how ed's arc was done. It was literally what archie said. "They just get away with it and we move on". For how much ed did to frenchie jim archie fang and lucius he never actually got the consequences for it. Ed was literally cutting off izzy's toes for every little minor mistake and then shot his leg. And izzy was making up shark stories to NOT blame ed for it. I think killing off izzy just as he was getting closer to the crew and learning to love and be more free makes his arc uncomplete too. Literally why couldn't ed and stede stays with their inn and either izzy or frenchie becomes the captain and the other being the first mate. Would make sense for the crew's and izzy's development the whole season

Why make izzy and the crew so close and connected if he wasn't gonne be the captain in the end😭 what was the point of the "for the new unicorn" if izzy wasn't gonna be there to lead and protect them

Yeah, the 8 episode thing and the lower budget have left a lot of fingerprints on a lot of aspects of this season. On the other hand, I wonder: why did they shovel even more things into the story? don't get me wrong, I love Zheng and Auntie. And I love Archie. I really enjoyed the Ned episode and Ricky... tbh, I am neutral but optimistic towards him ^^ but why did they introduce Ned Low and then only for one episode? Why did they need Ned AND Ricky? why didn't they downsize a bit but then absolutely rock the story they tell? I really stick with my "he knew he only had half an hour and fewer ingredients and decided to make a Lasagna anyway. He could've made a simpler, faster dish and absolutely nailed it" analogy. and at the same time, I can't imagine how frustrating it must be to have these huge stories and plans in your head and then not be able to bring them to life the way you want to. I really wouldn't want to be in that position. especially if you don't know whether there will be a season 3 or not. and honestly? from the outside it looks a bit like hbo almost works against the show and doesn't seem to be very supportive. which is weird considering that it's really successful. but some things looked to me simply like bad choices. Izzy's death (the way they wrote it to be precise), Zheng and Auntie's spontaneous brain loss, Ricky's magical ability to pull guns out of his ass ^^ the way they treated the fact that Ed is now a complete killer machine who murders people with his bare hands like it's nothing (they simply ignored it and showed it for laughs even though the killing issue had been a big and complicated thing for him through the entire series ^^). or is this his growth? that he kills people directly and brutally because ... Stede's love gives him the strength? yeay? now he kills people for Stede^^ This and other scenes kept giving me the feeling that Ed didn't really have a lot of character development. He still can't communicate for shit, he and Stede still use the "we completely ignore our hurt and our conflicts and simply decide that everything is fine" - technique and we all know how well that worked in the past ^^ (oh and I don't mean that Ed is or should be on his way to become a "good" person. but his journey really confused me. though your perspective about from which point of view we are watching a show and through what lenses helps a bit) Stede had some absolutely beautiful moments but after looking at the entire season it feels to me like he moved even backwards ^^ he is still a self-centred, selfish guy who doesn't think things through and puts others at risk because of it. when they "planned" their mission it almost broke my heart a bit. the magic between Ed and Stede in the first season was partly because they inspired each other. They both sparked each other's creativity and were able to pull off an absolutely insane fuckery. and now they both are in the same room, besties again, vibing and all they can come up with is "we use Ricky as a hostage, let him keep a loaded gun because a room full of seasoned, competent and intelligent people is not able to check him for weapons. then we let the guy with a wooden leg and two visible tattoos lead the hostage towards the Navy even though we could also let Stede do the job since he has the perfect looks for a Navy officer and is probably a better actor than Izzy. and then... what? oh and there is an ambush? I guess?" seriously, what was the actual plan? because that was not an entire plan. that was like... 12% of a plan to quote Guardians of the Galaxy ^^ and I don't care that it's better than 11% ^^ (the road to moscow scene was really nice though, zero complaints there ^^) (And I know that it's also a matter of time, but then why did they have this entire fishing thing at the beginning of the episode? seriously, that was waaay too long for my taste :D ) but to me it felt like they dumbed Ed down. They established him as an incredibly intelligent, creative and brilliant man in season 1 and now? maybe that cannonball DID do some damage ^^ (speaking of which: consistency? I don't know her ^^) and it was another situation where they did Zheng and Auntie dirty in my opinion. but their reunion is so beautiful! great acting! I know it didn't look like that in my previous comments but damn, I loved season 1 Stede and Ed so fucking much. not just as a couple but also as characters. Sure, they were deeply flawed but that's ok. who isn't? but I am a bit confused by their arcs. and I am actually kinda worried about them at the end? because this is not a good or healthy situation for them. but serious question, what was the last conversation with Zheng for? why have a team up talk when they don't team up in the end? was it really just there so they don't have to make a cut from the funeral directly to the wedding? oh and Jenkins keeps insisting on ofmd being a romcom and workplace show. sure, episodes 1 and 2 are really dark for a romcom, but hey, pirates. but who on earth has such an episode like ep2 in a fucking romcom and doesn't put a trigger or content warning at the beginning? I mean, they literally showed the entire scene with Izzy and the gun in a romcom and didn't think that a little warning might be a smart idea? I usually don't call for trigger warnings. actually, I think it's the first time. but s2 ep2 might actually need one. (sry for the weird phrasing, curse these youtube guidelines) a little live ticker while I watch your video:(damn, this comment is a mess ^^) I fully agree when it comes to Anne and Mary. and yes, I also love how Lucius was traumatized, on edge and so angry! and damn, I love it that Lucius and Pete talk about shit ^^ about Olu, Jim, Archie and Zheng: honestly? I'm simply confused ^^ I think that it was a bit rushed and confusing ^^ but they would definitively be the perfect polycule. And I love that Olu is a time traveller thought ^^ it describes him really well :D I personally really would've loved more scenes with the crew. in my opinion they were one of the strengths of the first season and it was in my eyes a bit a mistake to not use that strength more. I understand that they wanted to show Ed and Stede as a couple, but why did they isolate them so much? they could've made more scenes with Stede, Ed and the Crew together. that way we would have more crew, it might've helped Ed and Stede and we would've seen more bonding between Ed and the Crew. or at least more chance for redemption. but on the other hand, I have no idea what was going on in the writers room and why they made the decisions they made. about Ricky and his plan in ep 2 etc... honestly? the writing doesn't always make sense and has some holes and I think that's another example ^^ but you might be right and he might've been part of the deal. I genuinely don't remember that anymore. also: Ricky is in my opinion an idiot ^^ Fang is the best and must be protected at all costs! the way he says fishies warms my heart^^ and yeah, he really helped Ed a lot! I liked these scenes so much. oh god, I just realised that even Fang was in this season more of a father figure and mentor for Ed than Izzy was ^^ seriously, David Jenkins, what were you thinking?? :D :D (I am sorry, but I will never get over the fact that this man suddenly started to call Izzy a father figure for Ed after the finale ^^ ) and there were so precious or hilarious scenes with the crew. ep 5 was gold! but also the chaos in ep 4... the reaction to the cake? ^^ despite all of my bitching and complaining, there were also many things that I genuinely loved about s2. they had some incredibly funny, beautiful moments. the entire cast outdid themselves and poured their heart and soul into it. and I just love so many of these characters

I think you missed the last scene of s1 ep10. It shows Stede picking up the crew.

Well it shows him on the dingy but not getting into the island. The crew wouldn’t have fit on that little boat. I’d have loved to see him walk into the little island and what they talked about and how they all got off.

I really liked your review! I also hated Izzy’s death. I disagree with you a little about it being necessary. I think the “bad” character having a redemption arc only to die immediately is such a boring overdone trope and I expected so much more from OFMD. I also hated his funeral and the fact that they buried him in land when he’s a pirate. Yes, they let Ricky keep his gun. I think that’s as stupid as thinking Auntie wouldn’t catch the clock-bombs. Overall, you were way more charitable than I was with the writers lol.

😊 thank you for the response. I love talking this show. I agree with you too. I definitely feel the death would have felt earned If it was better written story wise. It definitely felt pointless.
