Pretty much everything I've seen from this lens set is basically perfect. The way they make your image pop, the Skin tones, the shallow depth of field...excellent. I heard from two other reviewers that the 28mm is very very similar to the 28 Supreme Prime. If that's true, then I'm definitely gonna pull the trigger on it. As always great review guys. Love your work!

Before I had a BMPCC 6 PRO I already had a Milvus 50 ready to ride. I am a professional photographer and I can affirm that Milvus and Otus play in another league. If you want image quality and color processing, there is nothing better if what you want to achieve is image quality. I can't mention RED because it's not my level.Thanks for the video !

Also just wondering as you guys have both on hand - how is the 28 Otus ZE to fit & work with through adaptors on both the Canon C70 & R5 ?? Does it need additional mount support? The 55/85 seem okay as is - but the weight of the 28 Otus + EF-RF mount strain without a bracket underneath seems like it would put a lot of pressure on the RF mount / adaptor ?? Thanks for your awesome work :)

One of those videos that I know I will enjoy, thanks guys! Otus always appeared to be a great option for those who don't want to be stuck with E-Mount or RF-Mount lenses/camera. I wonder how does Otus line compare to Leica's Summilux - price, speed and adaptability is quite comparable, with Summilux being smaller and having more options overall (-100mm -85mm / +90mm +75mm +35mm +24mm +21mm). There's even the M 0.8 cine version, but "regular" lenses can also be modded with Studio AFS focus rings. Some lenses from both sets are known to cover the Hasselblad's X1D's sensor, Otus might be better at aberration control (APO d'oh!) but Leica is also great and there's no real comparison out there with modern cameras(a7S / FX6 / Komodo / R5 / C70 etc.) to know for sure! Would be an epic video :D

Thank you for this very interesting and compelling review. So if you were to choose between the Zeiss Otus lenses and the Compact Primes (CP.3), I gather you might choose the Otus line? (Admittedly the Otus are more expensive by about 20% than the CP.3's, and would require additional expense for modifications.)

I have been drooling over these for a while now. Finally in a position to consider buying them but now am conflicted because I have a c70 and an r5 and the RF 50mm is looking very good. The image quality is close while having AF and weather sealing. I imagine canon will release other RF primes soon too up to the same incredible standards. Decisions decisions ...
@seanvelasco-dodge
@seanvelasco-dodge 3 года назад
Entirely depends on on if you want autofocus or manual focus. For cine use the RF will be very difficult to use because it uses focus-by-wire which is nearly unusable to pull focus from manually. The Otus line still has better optics than anything on the market, but the RF L line gets you the closest. But if you go down the used market for the Otus lenses you can save about $5000. I got a whole set for about $6500 which would be less than getting new RF lenses. Either are great options!

Depends on the focal length, some of the focal lengths of the Sigmas are better than others (14, 28, 40, 85, 135 really standout). I think the Sigmas are more neutral but do suffer from more CA for the most part. I enjoy using both sets! Jake
@seanvelasco-dodge
@seanvelasco-dodge 3 года назад
The Otus set tends to have more Zeiss “character” with astounding focus fall off. Also, I sometimes have to check to see if I’m shooting at the right aperture because the depth separation really makes you feel like you’re shooting on a larger sensor camera. That’s due to the CA/LOCA performance and Zeiss’ micro contrast. But for the price, the sigma’s are about 90/95% the quality just with less character and not as nice build quality (still really nice). The sigma’s also don’t pull focus as well if that’s something you’re worried about.

How well do they match Batis lenses?
@CVPTV
@CVPTV 3 года назад
Haven't tested the Batis loads but probably would cut together fine. Jake
@Stanlyok
@Stanlyok 3 года назад
They do look similar, but optical design is completely different. Otus has much more elements "made of special glass with anomalous partial dispersion", which probably affects not only IQ but color rendering as well. The other thing is that Zeiss Batis (as well as Loxia) are built at the Cosina factory in Japan, not Zeiss facility. Cosina is still great and they are the ones who own Voigtlander brand and produce those lenses, so they are like step-brothers with Zeiss and are also great at lens production. On top of that Otus is an SLR design, while Batis are made for mirrorless (might cause different performance in the corners). Having that in mind I'll add that Batis lenses are not that well matched (usual for photo lenses), and I can't see why matching Batis with Otus will be any harder that Batis with another Batis or a Loxia. We currently use Sony E-Mount cameras paired with a set of Batis and Loxia lenses, but in the future we'll probably go for EF or M-Mount lenses only not to be stuck in any ecosystem. Cheers!
@terencechia3577
@terencechia3577 3 года назад
@@Stanlyok thanks for this! Been searching for this info since I invested in a set of Loxias. Doesn’t seem like there are gonna be any new releases for the Loxia line, so I’ve been looking at 18mm and 135mm in the Bâtis or Milvus lines to fill that gap in the wide and the telephoto end. Could you share anything you’ve found that closely matches the Loxias in color and IQ?
@Stanlyok
@Stanlyok 3 года назад
@@terencechia3577 heya! Both lines are great (Loxia and Batis), but from my experience - Batis has a more modern clearer and sharper look compared to Loxia ... yet the focusing is not mechanical, so you better have a camera that has good AF because even though it's possible to MF, it's not the way Batis was intended to be used. Don't know about Milvus much. They might be great for adapting to different cameras, but IQ ... not sure about that - even in this comparison you can clearly see green CA @3:45 which I believe comes from the Milvus 100mm macro that CVP uses for B-Roll.

According to Zeiss, the image quality of the Classic/Milvus Apo Sonnar 2,0/135mm is on par with the Otus line.
@seanvelasco-dodge
@seanvelasco-dodge 3 года назад
I second Lorenzo. The Milvus 135 f2.0 Apo is essentially an Otus lens without the badge. The reason being is due to Zeiss’ naming scheme. Every Otus lens has to be f1.4 to be considered part of the family. I plan on picking up the Milvus 18 and 135 in the following months! The classic 135 has the same optics as the Milvus, but the focus barrel pushes outward while focusing and that makes it pretty much useless for cine purposes. And the Milvus design is nearly identical to Otus which also simplifies the crossover
