I worked in the '80s music industry with lots of big named bands. I've also followed Darren from the beginning....THE beginning. Needless to say I have heard many great performances from him and the talented people around him. I never thought that I would say this and I've even made fun of people that have made this comment, but this is the first cover I have ever heard that I honestly believe is better than the original to my ears. Well done Darren and the entire group because the sound was a team effort. Darren, your vocals were unbelievably good. I felt it!

@@TheChristOfRockNRoll Ok you point out some great covered songs there but this a bunch industry people releasing a live recording on you tube with a bare bones band and group . The performances on this one take are perfect by all . Listen to the vocal work . My God Melissa's voice took this to another place . The songs you mention were all produced by top industry producers and musicians in studios . The performance here is phenomenal . Darren and the band f##king nailed it 110 % and thats coming from a big Meat loaf , Steinman , Rundgren Fan . I have listened to it around six times already . In my opinion this song is better than any of the songs you mentioned and from one of the biggest selling albums of all time .

@John Adams I do not agree, sorry. Meatloaf had an intensity, authenticity, immediacy, a depth of emotion that is not present in this version. After all, he was a bat outta hell. No one does Meatloaf better than Meatloaf, in my opinion. But, a very excellent cover here.

Jimmy Johnson's rendition of this Meat Loaf classic many years ago performed on the Don Immus show was the best I had ever heard. However, Darren's version and the outstanding backup vocals and post production mix makes this even better. I would not have thought that Darren's voice would sound so much like Meat Loaf. My new favorite.

Love the location, acoustic piano & guitar and flawless background vocals (bass and drums are perfect too!). The lead singer / pianist sounds like Meatloaf did in his prime (late 1970s). Meatloaf’s vocals are rangey and powerful - not easy to sing - but this singer made it sound easy. That’s talent.

Darren, I’ve watched this video quite a few times since you guys put it out. It never gets old. It just brings me back to my youth. Your voice and the backing vocals are gorgeous. I don't think a lot of people realize how difficult it is to not just cover a song, but to truly represent the original artist's delivery. Harder still is to accomplish live what the original artist did over several hours or days in a studio. This is, without doubt, one of the best and most accurate covers I've ever heard. Every tonal inflection, every part covered to perfection. I've played professionally for 28 years and had some great bands, but nothing even close to this. What a pleasure to listen to.

@engine22emt Interesting. I never really heard that, but I also can't find anything on it in terms of articles or studio stories. What I will say is that, like many artists I've seen, Meatloaf kind of stunk live. It was a great stage show, but the quality of his vocals was awful. The same was true when I saw CSN, Jack Bruce, The Outfield, and many others. Loved their studio work and performed their songs with bands for years. Saw them live and thought, "I've never been so disappointed! If this band was in a club we walked into, I'd walk back out." That's why I'm always so in awe of a band like this who covers material that isn't theirs and still does the song so well. Saw Leonidas and Friends live (phenomenon Chicago tribute band) and they are a good live as they are in the studio. Was blown away.

I am literally (nearly) lost for words. Finding it hard to write with this playing for the 4th time. You've always had high standards Darren, but this is next level. Quite frankly, Meatloaf’s classic song was one of those that most folks thought could never be covered with anything like the musical magic that it deserves… We were wrong. The outdoor setting, Grand piano and Darren’s voice blend perfectly with the backing vocals and perfect playing by the band - it’s as emotionally moving as the original, which is impressive In itself..! On the 30th of May, 1978, at age 14, I saw Meat Loaf on the BBC's Old Grey Whistle Test performing Paradise by the Dashboard Light... it blew me away. Later, when my pocket money could stretch to it, I bought the album it came from, Bat out of Hell, of course: it was played endlessly on my hand-me-down Dansette record player until it wore out the grooves (literally!). There's never been a time in my adult life when I haven't loved the voice and performances of Meat Loaf, and the writing of Jim Steinman (Jim's Bad for Good album is a great one too). I enjoyed this cover so, so much. Thank you, I absolutely loved this version - you all did an awesome job.

The searing emotion in Darren’s vocal delivery may well be explained by this being recorded during the middle of the drawnout legal saga. It’s only justice that he’s now been able to post this here to share with a much wider audience since his new channel has launched. The backing vocals and musicianship are always first class, and lift this already poignant track higher, a fitting tribute to commemorate the departure of Meat Loaf to the rock and roll dream beyond. Darren was always known to me as a singer first, and I’m still hoping he might one day do the track that he emotionally destroyed me with when he did a karaoke version of it years ago. He knows what it is!! Either way, he will undoubtedly continue to be exceptional with every performance he brings to his audience. Great singers impress with technical ability and performance. Exceptional singers move their audience and touch them emotionally.

@@sharonedeau Wow, I knew they split, but had no idea the problems. After the split, HSCC sounded terrible, better now, but Darren was the juice behind that group. So Glad he landed on his feet and for the better.
