Fans of Neil Gaiman's bestselling novel American Gods have been looking forward to its adaptation for some time. Finally, with the assistance of Gaiman himself, co-showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green will be the shepherds of this beloved story as it comes to the small screen on Starz next year. Director David Slade also has a hand in American Gods' debut since he directed the premiere episode. All of the above-mentioned creative folks were in attendance at San Diego Comic-Con along with the cast to talk about the upcoming, highly anticipated series.
Our own Perri Nemiroff also got to sit down with Ricky Whittle, who stars as the protagonist Shadow Moon; Yetide Badaki, who plays the goddess Bilquis; Bruce Langley a.k.a. Technical Boy; and Pablo Schreiber, who plays Mad Sweeney. Also starring Emily Browning as Shadow’s wife Laura, with Ian McShane, Gillian Anderson, Peter Stormare, Dane Cook, Bruce Langley, Cloris Leachman, Jonathan Tucker, Crispin Glover, Orlando Jones, and Kristin Chenoweth, American Gods will debut on Starz in 2017.
Check out the video interview with the cast and creative team of American Gods, along with a handy time index to help you jump to the juiciest parts:
0:40 - Fuller reveals that Badaki, Langley, and Schreiber are attending their first-ever Comic-Con, so they share their experiences so far.
1:20 - Fuller and Green explain why Starz was the perfect network for the show.
2:15 - Badaki teases her character's shocking introduction and her reaction to it. Fuller confirms it will be "as written."
3:10 - Gaiman reveals the stipulations he had in allowing the adaptation of his story, including maintaining the racial makeup of his characters, ie no whitewashing.
5:00 - Gaiman talks about his role in the casting process and watching Whittle's numerous audition videos.
5:35 - Whittle reveals that it was a hairstyle change that ultimately got him the part. He also talks about relating to his character and how they've changed his journey for the TV adaptation.
7:10 - Whittle shows off his smolder and sizzle looks; they're not to be missed.
7:35 - Langley reveals the influences for Technical Boy's various looks throughout the series.
8:40 - The cast and creative team reveal that they're still shooting the series and are about halfway done.
9:05 - Langley talks more about Technical Boy's limo and how his character sees himself as "the future."
9:28 - Schreiber reveals whether or not he's learned any coin tricks for the show.
9:50 - Schreiber talks about stepping into the role of Mad Sweeney after Sean Harris had to exit due to a family emergency.
11:25 - Green puts viewers on spoiler alert and talks about the show's reveals and necessary secrecy. He teases that they'll fill in some of the character's stories from the book with the "rich, full lives between those moments."
12:05 - Slade says the production isn't straight-forward, so it takes a lot of thought and discussion to keep it as grounded as possible and "trying to make the fantastical real."
13:40 - The cast and creative team talk about the moments and scenes they're most excited to see on screen, including scenes from Gillian Anderson and Orlando Jones.
15:20 - The cast reveals what makes American Gods a stand-out experience in their TV careers.
16:30 - They close the interview out the only way possible: with a dance party!

Neil Gaiman "Don't whitewash my sh*t". Are you listening Ghost in The Shell guys! Much respect to Neil Gaiman!

Gaiman's bit about anti-whitewashing made me really happy. it's so refreshing to see people actually care about such vital parts of a character and the casting process instead of assuming white is the "standard".
@RaizanMedia
@RaizanMedia 6 лет назад
Because it is the standard in America. The same way black is the standard in an African nation, for example. Being a standard isn't the problem, being the only option is. You should be anti-racism of any kind, not just whitewashing because Shadow is actually mixed, he isn't black only. This bullshit of ignoring the white part of a mixed raced child is disgusting.

Perri you did a GREAT job interviewing all these ppl. Most of these cast interviews are full of fluff questions and/or are rushed because of all the people. But your questions were great and I actually learned a lot about the cast & the show!

Really appreciate that! Was pretty damn nervous to sit down with eight people at once - especially when it was an incredible group like this!

I didn't think about it until I read this comment(which is a good thing btw) but jollyblue is %1000 right. What a great interview conducted with such extraordinary people from a journalist who has done their homework. So many awkward interviews out there but this was perfect. I would barely have been able to speak in such company but you did fantastic and made me even more excited than ever. They are really gonna knock this one out of the park it feels and what an accomplishment considering how difficult it must have been to bring this unique tale to the screen. Thanks again! Subbed! And for the record you have a wonderful smile :)

I had goosebumps just imagining Orlando Jones' first monologue as Anansi and the other actors applauding. The book is a masterpiece, I really hope the series makes it justice.

I always knew Shadow was mixed race as in black and white based on the description in the books. Gaiman good as confirmed it with his statement here, I love Gaiman the man is a literacy genius and a decent human being.

I've read all of Neil Gaiman's books and American Gods is actually my least favourite - although that still makes it better than a great deal of what's out there. I didn't find the central narrative that compelling and it was all over the place. The atmosphere, themes and characters were fantastic, however, and the very end - HOLY SHIT.
@squamish4244
@squamish4244 7 лет назад
serenevil He had all these amazing ideas and could not keep them organized. The book was also too long. Anansi Boys is about the same themes but is a lot better - and shorter. I would say he wasn't a good enough author yet but he wrote Neverwhere before that and it was convoluted as hell but never confusing or meandering so go figure.

well the show's going to be great regardless. bryan fuller never disappoints. i only hope he has someone to reign him in a little this time. hannibal was slightly too esoteric by the end Neil was always lacking this one thing and i could never put my finger on it nor could i even describe what it could be. i'm kinda happy you commented because he has such a solid following that i genuinely thought i was an outlier or else just didn't get it.
@squamish4244
@squamish4244 7 лет назад
serenevil You are certainly not, many of Gaiman's fans recognize that American Gods is a sprawling mess. I could never seem him writing a book like it today, for instance The Graveyard Book and the Ocean at the End of the Lane are exemplary in terms of writing skill. I hope that the show reigns him in too.
