The sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes has its origins in the Marian apparitions witnessed by Bernadette Soubirous in 1858 in the town of Lourdes. Bernadette was a 14-year-old peasant girl who, on 11 February 1858, while playing near the grotto of Massabielle with her sister and a friend, claimed to have seen a "lady" standing on a rose bush in a niche above the main cavity of the Massabielle grotto on the left bank of the Gave de Pau river. She saw the same vision 18 times from 11 February to 16 July 1858, despite being forbidden by her parents to go to the grotto again after her sister had told them about the apparition. The "lady" eventually introduced herself to Bernadette as the Immaculate Conception, a dogma proclaimed for the Virgin Mary by Pope Pius IX in 1854. This convinced local priest Dominique Peyramale that Bernadette had seen an authentic apparition of the Virgin Mary.
During the apparitions, Bernadette received instructions from the "lady". These instructions were central to the development of the sanctuary and its ceremonies. Bernadette was told to drink water from a spring that would appear inside the grotto and wash herself with it. She was also instructed to tell the priests to build a chapel at the grotto site and invite people to come there in procession.
As time passed, public interest in the apparitions grew, and curious visitors were replaced by pilgrims from increasingly far away, drawn by compelling stories of apparitions and miracles.
The Grotto of Massabielle is a must-visit spot for all visitors to the Shrine of Lourdes, regardless of whether they are ordinary tourists or believers. During the visit to the Grotto, visitors maintain a silent atmosphere, and most people touch the wall of the Grotto with their fingers as a sign of respect, or to make a wish or say a prayer. Additionally, processions are organized for infirm pilgrims.
Grotto is the image of the invisible God who gives us the strength. “The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer. My God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold!” (Psalm 18:2).
