I've always thought it was miraculous that a man could carve pieces of wood so perfectly that when put together without glue they would hold liquids. Coopers are magic.

Seriously, one barrel made from the staves of dozens of other barrels. Barrels of different ages and sources gives up a single stave to make on Frankenstein's barrel.

What are the regulations regarding barrel storage? could a company age whiskey in something that would effectively amount to a picnic pavilion with chain-link walls for maximum climate impact?

I have two mini barrel projects going, and one of them I have to end earlier than I wanted because one of the staves has a crack in it, probably from the Albuquerque heat. The other one is only a 3L barrel, so I'm going to pull that one soon too (about a month). Thanks for the great videos to inspire my personal shenanigans.

It would be interesting to see the actual whisky going in and out of the wood in a time lapse video. I know the whisky barrel would need to have a lid that is see through or something. Rex can definitely figure this out! Maybe there is a video of this somewhere but I have not found one. Could be a cool evergreen content for this channel. 😎

So let's say you didn't want a sweet spot would it be possible to have a barrel warehouse with specific conditioning devices to cool down or heat up the storage area to flavor it via the barrel so that everything is the same as possible?

Incorrect assumption on the "red line" (depth of penetration). That is BETWEEN staves and there is more space there to seep deeper. I cut staves in the middle and the penetration is VERY LITTLE. Cut that stave with a band saw and sand it and then look at the line. Maybe 1/8 inch or so. Also depends on whether it is a bottom stave that stays in contact with liquid or a top (bung) stave that loses contact soon after filling. Again lots of variables.

I purchased two five-gallon oak barrels. One was wonderful. The other leaked like a screen door and was eventually just thrown away. What a bitter disappointment it was!

Frankly if your barrels are jack daniels or beam or any big company that manufacture their own barrels, it’s luck of the draw. The best casks are made by coopers not machines. But machines are cheaper

so in Kentucky all the rickhouses have an earthen floor covered in lye. The exposed earth provides a sort of natural air conditioning, the lye is for pest control. you guys might need some sort of temperature control moderation to help the barrels survive that TX heat and cycle more naturally?

I worked in bushmills distillery when I was younger , rolling barrels off the shop floor if we seen a leek in the barrel we took some dried river rush and hammered it into the leek marked it and to be stored leek up
