Your next 80s song should be Blue Monday by New Order, which was a new wave synth-pop song that will blow your mind! It was revolutionary at that time because that kind of music was unheard of until it came out, and it always packed the dance floor. Totally different kind of music than what you usually react to, but very worth it!
@moonlander2821
@moonlander2821 29 дней назад
WTF?! You mean they haven't done Blue Monday yet? I came to the comments to recommend "Vacation", but if you're telling me they still haven't heard the most quintessential of 80s songs, then I've got to make a hard push for Blue Monday!

As big as The Go-Gos were for a time, I think they still don't get enough credit for how good & how deeply influential & inspirational they were. Growing up in the 1980s, I heard endlessly that anyone can start a band in their garage and, with luck & effort, make it big. Problem was, there was always a huge, "no girls allowed," sign over everyone's garage. In music/band class in school, girls were encouraged to play certain instruments (piano, violin, cello, woodwinds), & discouraged from playing others (guitar, any percussion that wasn't tambourine or triangle, bass, brass). Needless to say, most of the instruments associated with Rock music were considered unladylike. Women were occasionally lead singers of bands, but more often they were relegated to background vocals. Rarely there might be a single female musician in an otherwise all-male group & it was always a big deal. We could look back to women in Rock & Pop groups of the '60s & '70s, but there was a weird vibe change that happened in the '80s in which girls & women were typecast as more suitably Rock groupies than musicians. The Go-Gos were one of a handful of women who made it. Yes, once they signed to a major label, a lot of their edges were sanded off to to make them more Pop than Punk, because that's where the $$$ was. That said, they never gave up on who they were at their core; they were, "Riot Grrrls," a decade before the term was even invented. Performing live (or at moments even in their Pop-piest hit songs), you could still hear their roots as a middle-fingers-up Punk/Garage band.

They were always very pop HOWEVER...So I remember seeing them in 1980 maybe 79 at Madame Wong's or Hong Kong Cafe? These were some pretty hardcore punk clubs back in the day. The punk rockers hated them (but thought they were hot let's not fool ourselves lol) cups and bottles were flying at the band, guys were trying to piss, spit at them. They were getting spit on those girls would pick up the bottle just thrown and drink out of it. Belinda the lead singer had loogies dripping down her face singing her heart out. Then they go in the back hallway doing blow and banging the guys backstage. It was the most Rock and Roll thing I'd ever seen. I'd never seen women who could take it, and dish it out like that so I have mad respect for The Go-Go's. Oddly one the most Punk Rock bands ever.

The album this Go-Go’s version is on has a special distinction that it was the first and only album by an all-female band (in which they wrote their own songs and played their own instruments) to top the Billboard album charts - remaining at number one for six consecutive weeks

Thanks for getting to the Go Go's!! Believe it or not, they rose out of that great LA punk scene in the late 70s and decided to become more pop oriented when they realized they had the talent to do so. They were groundbreaking. All females writing and playing their own instruments was not common. And they could PARTY and hang with the most debouched colleagues. Many good tunes left to cover (please) but my fav is This Town from the same LP. It retains some of that punk edge that would be pushed down for more pop-oriented material.

Simple, clean, 80's pop, very well done. The Go-Go's rock.

The Go-Gos stand up remarkably well. I always loved that middle 8, especially the bass and vocals parts.

Such a GREAT song - it made the group. At the time, they were so young, so fresh, and so fun - it was a different, yet wonderful, era.

If ever there were a song made for blaring while driving around with the top down on the car…this is it! Also, edit to my real life experience…dancing full stop to this song blasting from a boombox just outside the library doors at the University of Oregon in 1981. 😎

Good reaction and glad to see you finally check them out! In 1981 there weren't many all-female bands who played and wrote their own songs--and there weren't ANY who did that had a #1 album (and that might still be true, they might still be the only ones). Most female artists were solo acts or vocal groups. Anyway, this song brings back a lotta great memories, so thanks for checking them out!

Believe it or not, the Go-Go's are still the only all-female band to have had a no.1 album that was both written and performed by the band.

Ah, the early 80s were a great time to be alive. Perfect tune riding the line between rock and new wave. I was in 4th grade when this came out and it brings me back to when my neighbor would be outside cranking this, Billy Squire, The J. Geils Band, Ozzy, Asia, etc. There were quite a few female fronted bands from this era who produced cool sounding music without losing their femininity like Missing Persons, The Motels, Joan Jett, Scandal, Quarterflash, and of course Pat Benatar. All are worth a listen.

The 80s girl-group revival was great. They took off from the girl groups of the early-to-mid 1960s and updated the sensibility without losing that pop sound, as well as played their own instruments, which girl groups of the 60s did not.

Ugh!! Just missed the live stream!! This is probably a Top 10 80's song! An all woman band that came out of L.A.'s punk scene, I think their main song writer was Jane Wieldin(?), the bassist. Super influential! Boys liked them too!! LOL!!

The other 1980s girl group-the Bangles. Let me recommend 3 bangers from their first LP, which was before they took a softer, pop sound that yielded several big hits. These 3 songs weren’t hits, but they are 80s bangers: “Hero Takes a Fall” “Dover” “Going Down to Liverpool”

The GoGos were referred to once as the Female Beach Boys and The Bangles ( which you did hit once in a livestream with their remake of Simon and Garfunkel’s Hazy Shade of Winter) were the Female Beatles. Mostly in terms of their sound. I do know that when I compile a summer sounds playlist, I always pull in everything by The Beach Boys and everything by the GoGos. There was a good documentary about them in 2020. At one point they were on tour as the opening act for The Police.
