For your geography classes you could get one of these scratch off maps but instead of scratching off places you’ve visited you could scratch places you’ve learned about! Each kid could get a turn and then by looking at the map it would be easier for them to recall what they’ve learned.

I've always had a less than stellar opinion on home schooling, but after watching you for a while and watching this new channel, I get it now! And honestly, things like naming the capitals and all the presidents is something public school never taught us and since I always loved lists, that's something I could see myself really enjoying learning as a kid. Also, I hated school so much and it certainly helped foster my anxiety so i think home school would have been better for me , situation permitting. Anyway, all this to say, thanks for opening my eyes to this and making it seem like a possible alternative for my future kids :)

I love looping! My daughter wanted to do typing, cooking, and sewing, so we added those in in addition to science/history. It’s a wonderful system! We use US map laminated placemats for the kids to practice tracing different states. Then we’ll talk about the capital of that state as well. 😊

As a non American i used a quizz online for states, states' capital, even states "nickname", rivers etc. different levels ( found the state, click the capital name, locate the capital on the map...) and there is a timer option so you can challenge yourself.

I don’t homeschool (I follow because I love your other channel and find homeschooling fascinating) my middle child is almost 16 and next summer will be sitting his exams (we’re in the UK so he’s sitting GCSE’s) and I think I’m going to tweak this idea for a revision schedule rather than a timetable as like you say life gets in the way sometimes but I can decide frequency of subjects based on how important and work it from there so thanks for explaining the idea 😃

Hey Angela :) Just an idea for teaching your kids about world geography and cultures of the world: Why don’t you make use of your subscribers from all around the world and have them send you pictures and letters about what their country / area is like, recipes etc.? :) I’d be very happy to contribute, I live in Hamburg/Germany and would be happy to send your kids a letter about northern Germany, what it looks like, the wether, the culture, the typical food, etc. That’d be such a fun project, wouldn’t it? :)

For learning world geography I recommend checking out RU-vid channel Geography Now, I think that especially the older girls could like it. There is an episode about each country (the guy is making them alphabetical order, the latest episode is Mali I think), every episode is 5-20 minutes long. I also really like Khan Academy, but I assume that you probably know it.

Loved this! I see a few things I want to purchase for my own classroom once I begin teaching. Current Elementary Ed major for those who may have never seen my comments before. I still remember learning all of the states, their locations & capitals in 4th grade. Ten plus years later I thankfully still remember them all. So, whatever it was that helped me learn them worked.

I remember when I was still in school, when we learned about different cultures and what they eat we would do a fun class activity by bringing some type of food from that culture to share...it was fun and a great way to learn. I think it would be a great and fun activity for your kids if they learn about the culture and then choose a food that they learned and make it together 🙂 just an idea

I’ve done schooling in both Australia and America and the approach that the two countries take are so, so different. I lived in America for 3 years from when I was about 7. I still recall every state and their capital city and I can still place most of them on a map. I have no idea what this knowledge does for me. Aside from being a cool party trick. American history is so much more focused on their own history as opposed to world history. And the interest in world history seems to only stretch as far as America was involved in it. Australia is totally different. Big focus on the world around us. Maybe because our own history is pretty limited by time and is also pretty horrible in terms of attempting to genocide our indigenous peoples. Australia seems to focus more on English, American’s more on math. Very interesting!

As a teacher now SAHM I love your outlook on education. I wish I could have ran my classroom like this but there was a lot of control from admin. This looping basket is a great idea! I cannot wait until my kids are a little older to start homeschooling. We are starting to work with my three-year-old on letters and numbers and letter sounds so I am considering purchasing the good and the beautiful preschool curriculum. I cannot wait to continue watching your homeschool videos. I just love watching your family you're such an inspiration.

Have you looked at the book "Give Your Child the World?" It has lists of children's books that correlate to different parts of the world. Some were non-fiction, some were fiction, and some were true-ish stories that had been somewhat fictionalized. I have been participating in a short summer session going through all of the parts of the world with my girls, but I can see how it could easily be stretched out into a year long set-up, since it is really just different amazing children's books to read to enforce what is being learned in other curriculum. My daughters, 5 and 8, absolutely loved it, and they have learned so much about how people live in other parts of the world.

I love looping baskets - though I do mine a bit differently. I'm homeschooling my grandkids (1 for sure, 1 on and off - he's 2 and wants to read like big brother) and I'm homeschooling myself - to actually learn all those things I was supposed to learn in college and in public school - and didn't. Because my eyes and my wants are infinitely bigger than reality - I invariably don't finish all I had planned (oldest grandson is 4 and ADHD so time learning is either limited by his need for movement - we do however have a lot of movement involved types of learning - or by the need to address a subject as isolated from other topics). For myself - well, I tend to overwhelm myself. So for us, it works to take each subject and whatever doesn't get done tht day, gets worked on the next. ie - one day I did the morning basket materials, MOST of the written work EXCEPT for math - and that was it. Next day we picked up with morning basket (done daily), and went straight to math, then to science. and continued accordingly. After completing all the studies thus far, we start all over again - or, if time and energy are flagging - we wait until the next day. True - I don't complete all I planned for a week - BUT we are getting an amazing amount of things actually completed.

We are looping this year too...excited to try it. We're also doing President's and States. I finished making my President's resource, working on the States. My daughter is obsessed with the Presidents. She memorized them a couple of weeks ago and is now working on the first ladies and the pets! :-) We have the same pet book. Another resource you might like for your older kiddos are the "Who Was" books. They have them for many of the Presidents and events in US history. They are easy read alouds and even though my kiddos may not grasp all of the points, they are getting a lot of the information. And like you, I'm also an Usborne fanatic. I haven't signed up as a consultant yet, but I need to do it...they are just awesome books!

Jupiter, Saturn say them fast, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto's last....or since Pluto supposedly Isn't a planet anymore you could end it "Uranus,Neptune is the last. Our school district had a separate 5th and 6th grade building and for those two years we had a period of the day for specials and they were on a six day loop (art twice, music twice, computer lab, science lab, I think?) so it took longer than a school week to get to all of them and if we had a day off of school you didn't miss one. The DK eyewitness presidents and the DK eyewitness First Ladies books are quite interesting. I have a few DK eyewitness books and they are full of pictures and interesting information.

Do you do you looping/morning basket in the same spot that you do your school work or in a more relaxed spot like on the couch? This is my first year homeschooling. Speaking of which I would LOVE it if you would do an advice video for new homeschoolers. Love that you created this channel 🙂

I want to homeschool just so I can plan and organize (I’ll join your musical!). Seriously, my kids are doing great in school, so I’ll have to live through others for now.

I’m 100% sure we could be great friends just based on personalities! 🤣 Also... I’m now gonna do a looping basket! Mine will literally include the same subjects. I laughed when you listed yours because that was mine at the start of the video!

If you are looking for any resources for memorization, I have been using a few RU-vid videos for my child. There are some great US State and Capital raps/songs nowadays. (I even found the 90s rap I was taught in school! 🙈 LOL)

You should check out the bendy beanstalk. They’re also a home schooling family and they love Usborne books which is where I heard about them first. They sell many informational and educational books, games, and toys! They also vlog: Chloe and beans. They’re from Australia and have 6 kids! Love their vlogs!

Stack the states is a fun app if you use tablets. We used it like family trivia and you learn different facts about states, but there is also a U.S. map you can fill in
