For the one San Ti that was a pacifist, he was found out after he transmitted his response. As for their communication, they communicate via electromagnetic waves, so once they think something, that thought is immediately communicated. So not a hivemind.

If it even thought about the message around someone, they would know. I think it's more likely the Pacifist was alone when the message came through. I think the show gave enough information to reach that conclusion, and most people are just locked into the thinking they'd been taught by past sci-fi.

I’m pretty sure in the book, the pacifist is alone on a San ti space station just looking for transmissions, so when he receives and sends his message there’s no one around to realize or see what he’s done, he’s literally alone in space so hes unable to lie

@@Oliverf-ej8kl correct, the pacifist was in a tower searching the stars for a signal or any sign of life that isnt hostile(spoiler), but yeah his job is to do that and just that. in the book they go into detail on how these creatures are workaholics, if they dont work, they are dehydrated and forgotten. so he didn't want to lose his job by telling everyone that he found a signal of another planet. so he didn't communicate it and kept his job which kept him from getting dehydrated.

Iirc in the books it wasn't just that the pacifist hid the first broadcast, I believe the second broadcast was necessary to pinpoint which exact starsystem Vs the local cluster

If there was a pacifist who intercepted the first message then they can’t be a hive mind because one has alternative motives and thoughts than rest of the population. Some of them just keep an eye on the rest of the aliens when they are dehydrated. When they wake up, they may just punish him for this message. What was confusing to me were the changes in the Netflix series. The aliens (as a whole, not just the single one who warned them) did not intend to coexist with humans. Some of the people who were waiting for their arrival just believed this, but the rest of the people who collaborated with the aliens wanted the humans to be killed. The books were already pretty difficult to follow, and Netflix just took unnecessary liberties, which is why it is confusing in many places.

You're incorrect. This is why the Netflix series was not fully coherent with narration. Why did one of the aliens initially inform them of their hostile intentions? In the book, it is stated that the aliens do not intend to coexist with humans; rather, they are blatantly exploiting humans to facilitate their arrival.

But aliens were later surprised that humans are not direct like them. That humans can lie. This makes aliens rethink their strategy and not to underestimate humans or possibly be even scared of humans. It leads into the dark Forrest theory which is that the universe is a dangerous place and that revealing humanity to the universe was a bad idea. We don't have examples outside of Earth, but in every situation where a more technologically advanced human civilization came in contact with a less advanced one, the less advanced one was either destroyed or subjugated. We see similar things even in the animal kingdom with groups of animals coming into a new place and out competing the animals that were already there. Hell, even plants do it with evasive species. It seems to be a fundamental aspect of life in general. But what confuses me is the first point of contact.... "I am a Pacifist" Are they not of a hive mind so how is that possible

The show makes plenty of sense here. You're just tripping over your book preferences. Paying attention to all information given in the show, the San-Ti did intend to co-exist but did not intend to leave us unhindered and intact. They can't trust us if we can kill them, so they could only coexist if they could ensure our inferiority. When they discovered lying, plans to conquer changed to plans for eradication.

@@mfgrobin9657 this is just wrong. They said either 3 or 4 seasons with maybe 3 with a few extra episodes. It has been renewed for multiple seasons and the directors and one of the writers confirmed on their social media it will be at least 3. They never once said they wanted 5 more seasons which would be a total of 6. They always said either 3 or 4.
