Liu Cixin’s Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy is one of the most compelling modern sci-fi series in my opinion. If you like science fiction that really zooms out and drives its speculative ideas out literally to the end of time then this is probably the series for you. Now I of course have several videos covering several aspects of the series but in this video, we will get to a topic that has been requested for a very long time and that is the Wallfacers, and the Wallbreakers. Now obviously if you have not read the series this video is gonna be full of spoilers, although most of it would probably go over your head anyway, but if you have read the books, or at least seen my previous videos, or if you just don’t care about spoilers then feel free to continue forward.
This video makes an error by omission. This was an oversight, and I won't let something like this happen again, but mistakes in scripting and editing occur at times. I take full responsibility for this error. The final part of Wallfacer Frederick Tyler's Plan would have been to detonate bombs to destroy the Trisolaran fleet and ETO, this final part was missing from my script and from the video and somehow I missed this in the editing process. I apologize for this mistake. For more info, watch this update video: • The Wallfacers (Bonus)...

@@loszhor The plan was to secretly turncoat to the ETO and have the mosquito swarm piloted by ETO loyalists. At the doomsday battle, the loyalists would turn on the Earth fleet and destroy them in a surprise attack. Then, as a sign of loyalty, the remaining loyalist ships would transport a mass of ice water to the Trisolaran fleet as they would be severely depleted in resources after the four century trip. At that point, Tyler would take direct control of all the mosquitos, rush the Trisolaran ships and detonate their H-Bombs in lethal range of them. As others in the comments said, he would've been a triple agent.

Okay after having watched the video I just got to point out something. Wall facer Frederick Tyler was in fact a triple agent. The part of his plan that I didn't hear talked about in this video was the fact that his mosquitoes swarm was able to be remote controlled by him and the nuclear payload that each ship had could be remotely detonated by Frederick as well. The last part of his plan was going to be once the ETO Pilots had delivered Europas water to the fleet, Frederick was going to trigger the bombs inside the ships and destroy both the ETO Traitors and the Trisolaran fleet. This is all in the books.

I think that might've been an easy mistake to make. Tyler's interaction with his wallbreaker is only 4 pages (pgs 195 - 199 in the Aug 2015 paperback). In contrast the book spent several chapters using the public response to Tyler's plan to establish the public negative hatred for wallfacers, particularly the loss of trust.

@forensice459 I remember that he wasn’t actually persecuted, he felt that he deserved to be, but everyone else believed that his plan being released was actually part of his plan. The guilt and the pressure from being hailed as a hero while believing he was a horrible person drove him to suicide.

Technically, Wallfacer Bill Hines' plan succeeded in the end, unlike Luo Ji's, which we all know didn't turn out well. The Mind Seal was responsible for the actions of some of the crew of Blue Space, which, together with Gravity, preserved humanity until the final end of the Universe, according to the fourth unofficial book in the series. @Must_Do_Better Correct, but their human collaborators DO. The only reason there can be any fight back against wallfacers is because of the ETO - the organization of human collaborators. Remember in the very beginning when ppl are recruited to play the 3 body video game, and then those players most invested are invited to a special mtg, where they are told the unstable 3 body world of the video game is real? They're told about the Trisolarans and why they want Earth and most of them decide to take the Trisolarans side: either because theyre bitter or cynical about humanity and want us to go extinct, or because they think the Trisolarans will allow those humans that help them destroy humanity to survive and join them. This mixed group starts the ETO not long after.

@thehawkinator

I love the video, but I kinda wish you had talked about Frederick Tyler's plan in the Chinese versions of these novels. In those, his plan involved using the Ball Lightning phenomenon on a space fleet to energize them to a quantum level, making the fleet impossible for the Trisolarians to defeat (or something along those lines, correct me if I'm wrong). Frederick's plan was changed in the English translations because the novel Ball Lightning hadn't been released for western audiences yet and Liu didn't want to spoil Ball Lightning or involve concepts from his other novels that the West hadn't been able to read yet. Pretty clever.
@Facesforce
@Facesforce 6 месяцев назад
I'm going to be honest, I despise this type of localization. The reason I've started to read these novels is so I can chat with my Chinese wife on them. The idea the changed it to hide the concept of a future book, despite it being in the original Chinese release, only causes misunderstandings in between our two people. It's ironic that the book also critiques this, and then the localization staff promptly did it.

In fact, there are many things discussed in this book, including the Cultural Revolution in China in the first book - and some scenes in the subsequent two books actually resemble the Cultural Revolution. But I find that many Western readers just think of the Cultural Revolution as "ugly China" and don't think deeply about it. The British neuroscientist failed because he had too much power, and Taylor failed because he did not have enough power... In fact, when you say that Tyler should have succeeded, have you considered the wishes of those who were sacrificed by him? What is more important, the victory of humanity or the morality of humanity? China has long been contemplating the pros and cons of totalitarianism, and in many cases, totalitarianism may not necessarily be a bad thing. Dictatorship is similar. The ultimate failure of Luo Ji in "The Three-Body Problem" is because not only did the Trisolarans live under his deterrence, but Earthlings also lived under the same threat. Earthlings resented Luo Ji's dictatorship and ultimately stripped him of his position as the Swordholder. Regarding the Cultural Revolution in China, as depicted in the first book of "The Three-Body Problem," how do you view it? The Cultural Revolution was not sparked by Western media to tarnish China with “communism.” It began with the aim of overthrowing those who exploited the people, but eventually morphed into a situation where anyone who was better off than others was targeted. A similar scenario occurred when humanity, dissatisfied with Luo Ji’s "dictatorship," replaced the Swordholder, who should have been decisive and ruthless, with Cheng Xin, who they saw as a representation of "truth, goodness, and beauty." However, in reality, Cheng Xin not only lacked deterrence against her own people but also lost it against the Trisolarans. During the COVID-19 pandemic in the previous years, the most popular phrase in China was "Humanity does not thank Luo Ji." It is known that the medical conditions in the United States are better than in China, and its land area is about the same as China, but its population is much less (indicating a much lower population density). However, in these years, due to the pandemic, over a million people died in the United States, while in China, less than a hundred thousand died during the initial outbreak, and thereafter there were hardly any significant changes. A large number of Chinese people's lives were saved due to the government's mandatory policies. But many people crazily attacked the Chinese government, believing that the government restricted the freedom of citizens... "Humanity does not thank Luo Ji..."

The best part about this scifi story was how Liu meshed ideas and extrapolated reasonable results. This is speculative hard scifi at its best. The idea of cosmic sociology being hostile is just a simple idea, but to combine it with game theory and use it as a deterrent, that is a stroke of genius. And then later on, how the story explains a civilization may declare its passivity and thereby avoid destruction, the use of a children's story to secretly pass on info, the repercussions of FTL travel on light speed, and so on, difficult to imagine the solution when you read it for the first time, but makes so much sense when Liu reveals the answer later on.

Tyler's story is totally different from the original version in Chinese. They had to make up a new story for Tyler in the English version, because in the original version, his strategy was heavily dependent on a theory and scientific discovery in another Cixin's novel "Ball Lightning". which happened in the same universe but many years ago before three-body problems. Most of western readers who didnt read this novel probably wont understand it. To be honest, I dont like what they did with Tyler's story, it just doesnt fit.

He put his hope on this quantum ghost army still be loyal to their mission after this. And this quantum form army become capable of defeating the aliens. To understand this better, I strongly suggest to read Ball Lightning, its an awsome novel anyway.
