I'm considering moving to Mexico when I retire (roughly 8 years). Like most, my 401k has been taking a beating, and I started it way late (I was on disability), so it's not going to be a great help. Seeing your expenses is really helpful for me. When I do it, I'll be by myself, but I'll also rent an apartment or, if my savings hold out, buy a small place. I love to cook, so I likely will only need a little for eating out (although I absolutely will sometimes). Do you run into U.S. or Canadian expat communities much?
@EricandSarah
@EricandSarah 7 месяцев назад
Mexico is a great choice for retirement! I think the gated communities are where it starts to get expensive. We didn't tap into any expat communities here, but I know there are a lot in Oaxaca. A place where we found a lot of Expats was in San Miguel de Allende. Might be worth checking out - though more expensive there because of it.
@KarynHill
@KarynHill 7 месяцев назад
@@EricandSarah That's my assumption, that any area with any size of an expat community will be more expensive. I haven't yet decided how close I want to be to one. Maybe very close, maybe far away. I'm quite an introvert and not sure how much community I'll want. Thanks for responding so quickly!

I am also a foreigner and I have been here in Mexico for many years but I am sorry to disappoint you, the taxes here are not cheap at all and even less so to open a store. I have so far had 3 stores that open and close due to the high costs. I think it is time to think about another strategy

I really enjoy your videos when you talk about long term stays. Your videos about 1 month in country X is very useful content for other digital nomads. I wish you would do more of these! Also those who work remotely abroad are always searching for accommodation with good internet and overall cities with good electricity supply 😀. It would be super helpful if you could mention accommodation you are staying at (and would recommend to others). Or maybe its possible to find this info somewhere already? Thanks and take care!

I am sorry to tell you that the electricity supply is not like in Europe, I am a foreigner who has lived here in Mexico for many years and in fact it is the complete opposite of what one might think, there are many disconnections without prior notice and the flow is not continuous sometimes until wind storms that could knock out the electricity is something you have to anticipate with a firewall, battery or other power options

My wife and I relocated to Morelia, Michoacan three years ago. She's a Mexican citizen, and I'm from Reno, Nevada..it's been absolutely wonderful! As far as the cost of living goes, we rnt a beautiful, nearly 4000 square ft home, in a very nice neighborhood for 8000 pesos ($400 USD) per month! Everything is affordable, the culture is amazing, and the people are welcoming. We live VERY well on my Social Security alone! The best move I've ever made. We've never seen a need for a car, everything is within walking distance. UBER suffices when needed. I had surgery for a brain aneurysm while in Mexico, and the medical care was outstanding, the doctors were great, and the hospital was modern. We've never been victimized by ANY crime. It happens in every large in the world, but it hasn't happened to us. Good video, you can get used to the life!

I don't know how you can find such deals - maybe because your wife is a citizen? We are in Riviera Maya and a furnished apt with 2b 2b with just 700 sq ft is 14000 pesos in a nice privada. Can't find anything less on FB marketplace, and Vivanuncios or Imuebles24 is even higher prices (no 2b 2b under 16k pesos). Our rent went from 700 usd to 900 usd just because of conversion rates... wish we could pay 8000 for even a small apartment. We also walked around, called "se renta" signs and still nothing lower than 14k pesos...

yeah we live in cancun and can't go under $500 usd in groceries plus around 200 usd in coffeeshops, plus like $30 for potable water deliveries... so $700-800 total... we don't eat much meat but good peanut butter, cashews, walnuts, honey, cold pressed extra virgin olive oil - these are 3 times the price in Mexico...

Not a big deal in US or Canada but is part of the culture in Mexico. i do not think colectivos (or combis) are dangerous for solo travelers personally. it is only dangerous if you're getting into a combi with nobody in it at a lonely time of day or night.

Question about paying for things. Looks like you were paying using paper money (I’m assuming pesos). Is that required? Are credit cards generally not accepted where you are in Oaxaca? I know a lot of folks staying in CDX who largely use cards rather than cash. Let me know please thanks!
@davidsebastianelli1326
@davidsebastianelli1326 4 месяца назад
It's pretty much a cash based society. Most merchants and landlords prefer cash for obvious reasons. You also stand a much better chance of getting ripped off using a credit card and eventually you will, I can guarantee it! Getting your bank account drained will most likely ruin your visit. Plus if you pull out a credit card you will get overcharged and there will be no chance for bartering. Get a Charles Schwab debit card or similar that refunds all ATM and exchange rate fees and just take out cash from an ATM as you need it. BTW- I live here and I never use my credit cards unless I absolutely have to. Haven't used one in years. The smaller bills are plasticized and I regularly swim and surf with money in my baggies (surf shorts) and you will need some coins to use most restrooms....Buena suerte!

The weather in Oaxaca is pretty nice year round and you don't really need a/c. You should know that not all of Mexico is hot. It's usually in the 70's and 80's in Oaxaca during the day and can get pretty chilly at night. You may want to download one of the many weather apps on your phone so you can easily check any areas you are curious about. I have 17 cities on my phone that I can readily check the weather conditions within seconds. It's 78 right now in Oaxaca with humidity at 26% Buena suerte
