We're. So. Excited. We've been exploding waiting to tell you the massive news now that it's official: LA VAGA III has begun. It's been a real labour of love to find our new home. It's something that we're really looking forward to and something we're really confident we're gonna love. We want to take you inside our new home, what it looks like.... hypothetically. Yes, we haven't built it yet, so this is as big a journey as ever for us.
It's clean and green, it's a super stable and fast trimaran that we've always dreamed of. As our family is getting bigger, these things have got that all-important storm-dodging speed and an insane level of stability. The guys at rapidotrimarans.com really know what they're doing with these beautiful boats and we're so glad to be with them.
Follow us on this brand new stage of our journey. For our existing patrons, thank you so much for being part of this incredible journey. If you haven't already, head on over to our Patreon page to get the inside info first: bit.ly/SLVPatreon

This is a good time to insert the 1st time you got the outremer up to 22.5 knots and Riley was jumping with excitement while Elayna was crying her eyes out, begging to sail slower - “We’re too fast, please slow it down” - amazing how time changes things.

I think they're excited to go fast. Especially on long treks. Get out of the way of storms. I like sailing fast for the sheer thrill of it. These two have a plan. What an exciting boat to look forward to.
@MichaelBuck
@MichaelBuck 3 года назад
@@MrKjelsvik Agree completely. This is their choice and they have done the research and for them, this is what they want to do, sail fast, maybe even RACE a little as well. But in no way does any competent sailor ever have to outrun a storm these days. With today's technology and data available just about anyone can learn to read the weather models and with good judgment make the right decision to avoid bad weather and wait it out in a protected port of call. FYI: I sailed fast as a youngster, enjoyed it immensely, but with a family of 4 and 2 very young children, that is not a consideration and doesn't fit into my way of thinking. I am open to learning and seeing how this will all pan out for them, but in all honesty, I give it 1-2 years before Elana says enough is enough, especially if a third child accidentally appears on the scenes.

@@testicool013 The windward hull is in the air "flying" out of the water. Flying a catamaran hull is dangerous because if it flies too high you capsize. Flying a trimaran hull is how most are designed so I do not see why this would increase danger. Your more likely to lose your rig than capsize.

One thought on your choice of bare carbon on the interior of the bedroom. Its a personal choice, and definitely looks cool, but I will point out that it will come at a cost. All of that black will absorb light, so if you had N lumens of light planned in a standard design with white paint, you will likely need double or more. More power, more lights, more wire, more complexity, and it will me much more harsh. This is a problem we have in data centers because some people decided a long time ago to paint all of the server cabinets black, and the servers were gray ...a combination that just sucked up light. If you put a white cabinet in a room like that, you can usually work in it with just the room standby/emergency lighting as well, if not better than in the black cabinet with all of the room lights on. Just thought I would point out that issue with bare carbon..

I am confident you have thoroughly consider all cons about a wide composite trimaran with two separate cabins reguarding availible dockingspace (and extra costs), ability to houlouts around the world, and your confidence about everythings allright in "childrens cabin" before the gems reach the teens, and concidirations about "noisier" hull due to the type of composite. It would be awesome with a video about your considerations about these questions.

I used to race 16’ Hobies with my brother, all fresh water. My brother handled the rudder & mainsail I worked the jib and was on the trapeze. No matter what anybody says, fast sailboats are a kick! The only thing that makes me worry is if you can “fly a hull” that means wind can get under the boat and the possibility of flipping increases. I’m sure this was considered in the design but basic physics says you can’t eliminate it as an increased risk.
@georgiogorge
@georgiogorge 3 года назад
You're not wrong about the Hobies, once the windward hull is out of the water you're very close to capsizing. But there are several factors making this not a simple comparison to a trimaran. Firstly, you're only seeing the windward ama lifting while the main hull is primarily still supported by displacement; once the main hull is lifted then flipping becomes likely. Secondly the leeward ama is the pivot point, which leaves you with all of the weight in the main hull and the windward ama to lift up (to the point of inevitable capsize), which is very close to 100% of the boat's weight. With a catamaran you don't have to lift the leeward hull, leaving what I'd guess to be 75% on a Hobie cat assuming the crew weighs the same as the boat. And thirdly the sail area (power) to weight (75%) ratio of a Hobie 16 is about 9x as high as that of a Rapido 60; but since I don't know how to actually calculate the forces involved I think it'd be best to just say I think the Hobie has significantly more lifting power for the weight it needs to lift to risk capsize.
@fakenamefakename12345
@fakenamefakename12345 3 года назад
@@georgiogorge What your talking about with "lifting power" is actually called righting moment. Once you have something that wants to pivot, a "moment" is created. Your like 99% there with your explanation. The righting moment on a trimaran is much much larger than on a monohull or a cat. This is why they are so fast. You can stay flatter with more sail area due to the extra hull. The catamaran yes has a higher power to weight ratio im guessing but it also has less righting moment and less mass which will allow the boat to pivot faster(accelerations are amplified).

It’s an awesome boat, the speeds and design is fabulous! I can’t help thinking that with the growing family that you will NOT be living on it full time. Based in Australia and making trips across to the Far East and Pacific islands perhaps? Or just a weekend boa/ holiday boat with Riley going off with blokes on fast sailing adventures sans kiddos. Just nowhere for ‘the help’ to stay. But wowsa, love this trimaran, it is the dogs parts. I have no kids and would jump at it ! (Message from Glynis Brown).
@sizzlemann
@sizzlemann 3 года назад
Glad you're happy but I think your family will have outgrown the boat before it even gets into the water. Do you really want to have two young kids in an area where you can't see or hear them? With you in the bow and them in the stern with no below deck access? I feel another larger Cat would best suit your family. I look forward to hearing in 2 years that you're selling the trimaran because it wasn't the right fit for a young family. Happy sailing!

Plus, no matter what you’ll hear (and you will hear the downplay) the danger risk just increased. That boat CAN flip. One bad squall and too much sail = disaster.
@hd-xc2lz
@hd-xc2lz 3 года назад
@@dictator9849 The new trimaran is more likely to flip than the Outremer? Agree with most commenters about the reduced space below, but was wondering if perhaps Riley and Elena had gone with a boat better suited to Pacific Ocean sailing, as it is a part of the world they've yet to explore. Guess not.

I have read the comments of many of your followers and I must say that I agree completely with their caution about safety and comfort. Your previous boat was no dog by any means but if you want to up the performance a bit and still keep the safety and comfort standard I am sure there is a perfect 60 footer out there that would suit all aspects of your sailing requirements. As far as a black interior goes?? all the light would be just sucked up. Please reconsider questions like where will any visitors sleep and room for two active kids? I would hate you to make a decision that you might be sorry for in the future. Love your story and videos
