Hi! We are Justin and Lil, plus four kids and one on the way. We are turning our 18 acres of raw land into a beautiful homestead and building our Off-Grid house by hand. Hit Subscribe to get weekly updates, and if you're new, check out our Playlist to catch up on our journey. Thanks for joining us!
In this video, our off grid house gets even "greener" with the beginning of our Zip sheathing system installation for the exterior walls. Justin begins to work on the wall sheathing, but Lil is taking it easy since she is pregnant. Without The Muscle, raising the zip sheathing boards starts out as a bit of a challenge for Justin; However, he is not beaten by the challenge of single-handedly installing the Zip sheathing. Being the clever engineer, he develops a plan involving 2x4 pieces, clamps, and sheer strength of will. This allows him to seal the house in like a tomb, one 9 foot sheath at a time.
The 9 foot Zip sheathing boards fit perfectly between the rim joists and the top plates.
The Dewalt nail gun continues to misfire, thanks to a mix-up at the local hardware store. Off brand nails are not as bad as Dewalt, but they are definitely not as good as Paslode nails. Despite the minor setbacks, installing the exterior wall Zip sheathing goes pretty quickly. It's all in a day's work on the Wild Berry Woods Off Grid Homestead.

Half of it sheathed. Woohoo. People can do a lot by themselves with thought and care to using helper devices like clamps and wood block screwed in place. Can't wait to watch the trusses going on. That will be tricky by yourself.

Hey folks, thanks for the next installment. Hope you're all ok and that Lil is doing well. Getting the sheathing up makes a real change to the build progress, looks like you did a good job measuring your framing centres. Enjoyed the narration style of this. Not going to make any more comments on the nail gun this time 🤣🤣Sure there'll be a roof soon enough! Take care in the heat and stay safe all!

Justin, You seem like the most even keeled guy on the planet. Congratulations to you guys on your growing family. Your work ethic is something that is seldom seen today. Great job on the sheathing but just a question, I thought the Zip system panels had to be staggered, is that not a requirement but a suggestion? Best of luck!
@DIY_or_DIE
@DIY_or_DIE 2 месяца назад
Hey there, thanks for joining us 😊 That is a great question! No need on the 8' walls, since the panels reached all the way from the bottom to top. I did stagger them for the second row on the 10' wall section, so I think we are on the same page 😀
@HellTriX
@HellTriX 2 месяца назад
ZIP System exterior sheathing panels are designed to have a gap between them to allow for panel expansion and contraction. This gap is typically 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) and is recommended to be maintained to ensure proper installation and performance of the system. According to the installation instructions, it is important to maintain a 1/8-inch gap when coupling the butt seams to allow for panel expansion. This gap is designed to accommodate the natural movement of the panels due to temperature and humidity changes.

Keith, from everything I've read, including the Zip sheathing manufacturers instructions, vertical is the recommended position. That being said, I know many other people do horizontal no problem 🤷‍♂️

@@DIY_or_DIE can you explain how they come pre- gapped?
@DIY_or_DIE

Yes, they make the panels so the long edge has this little bit in the center that sticks out about 1/16". When you butt the panels against each other (long side) they are "self gapping" ~1/8".

Sadly kids don't come already big enough to be help, but its sure fun making them/LOL. I am seventy five and live in alaska, memories of my own house that I built by myself and not knowing anything about carpentry was the making of sad looking walls. I did not know about crowning the lumber so waves on the wall were quite disturbing... I made it work but a hard lesson in building a shanty

@morgansword

@@DIY_or_DIE I was running from a bad marriage and saw alaska as a place far from my ex. Bad experience but time does heal all wounds. Loved alaska from the get go as it was wild when I got here. It was funny as many of us had a problem, some men would hide in the woods when a plane flew over where we worked in the southeast alaska islands. Later moved to central alaska and found the weather so very agreeable and just never lacked for work as mechanics are never out of work. Later found myself a lady who was a alaskan lady and made this home.. My first place was in Washington state where I got home from Nam and so just not really to settle down. Long story short as most don't like a whinny sad story but its all good. Alaska is a place where anyone can succeed if they try. I know things have slowed down everywhere but building homes seem to always be needed as well and so for the most part a man can find work in that trade. I can not speak for now times as I am retired. When I go out to the hospitals though, I always see new places being built
