Roof top tent, great for lowering MPG, and having a swaying tent and climbing down a ladder to pee, RTT were invented in South Africa, to keep campers from being eaten by lions and hyenas at night, not needed in North America, there are ground tents that cost $$$ less and set up just as fast, don't waste your money, and a stable bed with no climbing down a ladder to pee.

I swear this same comment was posted a few months ago. Sounds like you won’t be getting a rooftop tent👍🏻

Is the roof top tent too heavy for the allowed roof load of the jeep with 68 kgs overloaded by the racks + tent?
@RCoperator
@RCoperator 6 месяцев назад
I had to get aftermarket rails to accommodate the weight of the tent and load of the people.

Bro what’s ur lift and tire setup???
@RCoperator
@RCoperator 3 года назад
Two inch spacer lift with 31 inch tires. The fenders required cutting to fit the tires when turning. I don't recommend a spacer lift. Although they are cheap and relatively easy to install, they place stress on all of the other stock components and cause things to fail like the CV axles. It works for me for now but when I get a different vehicle and decide to lift it, I'll do a full lift kit.

How has the tent affected your gas mileage? Do you leave it on all the time? Also with the budget boost, keep an eye on your CVs up front
@RCoperator
@RCoperator 3 года назад
I wouldn't say that it has affected my gas mileage to a noticeable level. It's a v8 so the gas mileage sucks anyway. I leave it up all the time but we are planning to get an overland trailer in a few months so I can put the tent on that. I don't mind having it up there all the time but I want it off for these reasons, 1) to keep the tent in better condition (have it my garage when not in use 2) Gas mileage (obviously I would get better gas mileage if it weren't up there) 3) my wife doesn't love how high it is and it's a bit of a pain to get up and down when needing to go to the bathroom and what not (plus we a small child and plan on more so having it lower to the ground on the trailer will be a bit easer and safer) 4) I like to go off-roading and I would like to keep the weight down on my vehicle and not have to worry about jarring my tent around. Overall we love the tent though! I got it so my wife would start going camping because she hates ground tents haha. We feel the overland trailer would be our best option for now because it has some luxuries but won't hold us back from going to locations a camp trailer can't go. And about the budget boost... I know.. it's eventually going to mess everything up. It has already messed up the CVs once haha. I'm just working with this set up and I will eventually upgrade.

@@RCoperator I'm running a modified OME and superlift setup on my Jeep for 4" of lift and no complaints yet. Also a v8, mine is an 07 4.7L. Without the little guy you would still probay move the tent to a trailer so it's easier for you guys right? Thank you
@RCoperator

@@MrXxiiblackopsiixx nice!! I would love to have an actual lift on my Jeep. Maybe I’ll get one someday. Yeah, I think the trailer is the way to go. I used to want to make an “overland vehicle” but now I want to have the overland set up without having all the gear all over my vehicle. That way I can still use my vehicle for everything else I want to do as well.

@@RCoperator Nice set up, I've got a 2008 3.0 diesel Grand Cherokee with the factory crossbars. Each bar says 150lbs. I've found a tent that is listed as 108lbs. Basically, I'm just wondering if that would work for my vehicle. Did you have to get different crossbars for your tent. First timer here
@RCoperator
@RCoperator 3 года назад
I think 150lbs is total weight. My RTT is 160lbs so I had to get new cross bars. They are Thule brand and I got them at a local shop here where I live. On the Thule website you can type on your vehicle and it will tell you what bars I’ll work and the weigh capacities. I wanted to be extra safe because I didn’t want my tent flying off haha. What tent are you wanting to put on?

@@alexmaund6298 that is a nice light tent! The problem is I don’t know if the 150lbs that the roof rack is rated is a static or dynamic weight rating. You might be good to have the tent up there while driving (dynamic weight) but now you need to find out how much weight the stock roof rack will hold (weight of the tent plus people and whatever else you have in the tent- static weight).

We almost got an ikamp we ended up going with something similar but less expensive. Good video

Less Traveled the ikamper is soooo expensive!!! I hate how expensive it was! So far it’s been great though besides the mattress isn’t very comfortable at all. That being said it’s still just a rooftop tent. But for the price! It should be better in my opinion.

Bryce Penrod we ended up with a used Highland Expedition Outfitters from Tennessee! 1700$ came with the annex and awning!!! Even though my heart was set on the ikamp mini I am extremely grateful I caved because it has gotten me out to nature and I am enjoying the destination and the journey!

I mounted it on Thule evo wingbar rails. My stock bars were slightly underrated for the ikamper rooftop tent.

What type of rails do you have on it
@RCoperator
@RCoperator 4 года назад
I got them put on at a local shop and I’m not sure the exact model name. They are Thule brand and by looking at the Thule site, the “Thule Evo WingBar” seems to be what they are (they just might have an updated version on their site from the model I have). I took some pics if my rails but I can’t post them on here so if you want them I can send them to an instagram or Facebook account if you would like.

I keep reading standard rails aren’t sufficient to hold RTT. Just cause of the weight limits of having two bars. How has it worked for you though?

What modifications do you have on your WK? i have the same model and planning to do a westward road trip over the summer, specifically colorado, yellowstone and the grand canyon.

@RCoperator 3 года назад
I just have a two inch puck lift, two inch shell spacers, and slightly larger tires. The mods give me better ground clearance but if you don’t plan on going to a real rocky place or over big ruts your stock Jeep should do just fine 👍🏻
