Burg means castle. A lot of cities were build arount casles and have -burg in their name. Or a -hafen for a harbour, or a -rode for large woodcutting areas.

Number 20 was the city of Passau! One of the oldest cities in Germany! 3 rivers flow through the city and meet at one point! Was also voted the seventh most beautiful city!

13:30 yes, he did say that. The river is the border and when you cross the bridge, you get to Poland.

1. Burg means " fortress" or "fortified castle " and a lot of German towns and villages were built around them as they meant protection. There were a lot of local or regional feuds as Germany had over 300 kingdoms and dukedoms and even villages belonging to monastries etc before the first unification in 1871. 2. The " lake " in Blaubeuren is a SPRING of the River Blau ( or BLUE in English) . Depending on the weather the water looks blue due to its depth and shape and how the sun rays hit it. There is a museum with stone age artefacts that are 30 000 years old like a flute made of swan bones you can even listen to !

9:30 Our cities were built along rivers because these rivers were the most important transportation routes for trade and are still used as transportation roads today.

Fun facts: - Naumburg has a small tram line that use historic rolling stock - Werningerode is connected to the Harz narrow gauge railways, the biggest of it's kind in germany. It mostly operates steam trains that run through the Harz national park and up to the summit of mount Brocken - Quedlinburg is also connected to the Harz narrow gauge railways. The steam trains run through the selke valley on this part of the network. - The fruits and apples you see in the Lübeck section are made out of Marzipan - Lüneburg has a historic crane which was part of a harbour. A similar looking crane can be seen in the Stade section - Görlitz sister town "Zgorzelec" used to be part of Görlitz until WW2 ended and the settlement was given to poland. - Nördlingen was the main inspiration for the town in the Manga "Attack on Titan" - Number 20 is "Passau", located in southern bavaria next to the austrian border. The rivers Ilz, Inn and Donau (or Danube) flow together at this point.

Hi! The ending "-burg" means castle. I think, the city has become the name of the certain castle you can also find there. (If it still exists).

18:46 The roof shape doesn't tell anything about the house, no :) And the roofs of the two houses are basically the same, it's just the decoration and shape of the facade that changes. We need the steep roofs in winter, when it snows. Not that winter is as cold as it used to be (there actually was a mini-ice age during the 17th century here in Europe), when a lot of those old buildings were built, but the steep roofs have remained. 28:15 The town isn't called Donau, the River is - it's the Danube. Unfortunately, he really didn't give the name of the town.

15:30 "-burg", like "-burgh" in English, means "castle". IOW, it denotes a fortified city. Like the word "citizen" is related to "city", so is the German word for citizen, "Bürger", related to "Burg".

Yes, most of the church towers have clocks (at least in pre 20th century church buildings). In medieval time, these clock provided the time for everone else in town, as timepieces were not available (or affordable ) by the general public. Later the local tower clock provided a reference time you could set your clock by. Talking about references: In many medieval towns, the local reference units of length are found as an inlay in the wall of the local church or the city hall, as a reference for traders coming into town from elsewhere on market days.

I‘m still waiting for the small towns. Most of them are mid-sized towns. Freiburg and Regensburg are even major cities. (German cities are officially distributed into small, mid-sized and major cities)

When a settlement with lesser than 10000 inhabitants is called Stadt, this shows, the Stadtrechte/ town rights are very old, nowadays only settlements with over 10000 inhabitants get town rights, this happens from time to time.

Hallo, a Burg is a castle build for defence and to collect customs and taxes. Many cities are founded by a burg. (RegensBurg). A Schloss is a castle that is build for representation in later centuries when the defend with thick walls become stupid because of the development of canons. Like schloss neuenschwanstein or schloss Sanssouci. A lot of the oldest towns are so packed because of the rule : stadtluft macht frei - it means : if you breath the air in the city for longer, you will be free from servdom of the ground owner which rules his land or even state. The owners were the nobles and / or the church. So the emperior normaly give small parts of a region to found a free city / freie reichsstadt which was allowed to create their own rules. So the people needed a town wall to defend the city (Bürger)or a burg to defend your property and people (manor lord). It was a period with many little wars and some very big and ever lasting wars (30 years - 30 jähriger and 100 years - 100 jähriger krieg). Cu ralf

Except for Southern Europe, there is essentially only one species of venomous snakes in Europe, the adder. It is not particularly dangerous as it is rather ‘shy’ (rather flees than attacks) and does not carry enough of its venom to kill adults.

Don't be fooled by the multi-part windows. These are modern double or triple thermopane windows. In some cases, the window crosses are just dummies. In inner cities, there are regulations about how windows should look. There are also more individual regulations. Renovating a historic old building can be really expensive because it is almost impossible to get standard components and everything has to be made by hand.

The shape of the roofs has nothing to do with what the building is. Most of them are hundreds of years old and of course, restaurants have not been restaurants in the time they were built.
