Jean-Luc Ponty is awesome and was part of one of the great prog-rock and jazz a fusion shows I ever saw. Time was 1975, at the old Cape Cod Colosseum with the eye opener of a first band being Golden Earring who were on the Moontan tour and did that amazing album in it entirety. They freaked us out as Radar Love was just getting airplay. Man they were on point and we knew we were at a great show. Second on the Bill was King Crimson at the peak of the John Wetton era and they did the entire Red album along with much of their other albums. Robert Fripp sat in a darkened corner most of the set, sending out incredible guitar textures and solos, raging in a controlled way. Amazing set, almost 2 hours long. Then the headliner was John Mclauflin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra, with Michael Narada Walden on killer drums and Jean Luc dueling John in seismic runs into infinity. Great Jazz Rock Fusion by a bunch of masters. That show got out at one AM and we were exhilarated and exhausted. Those were the days, that show cost us $6.00 a ticket! Had to share, been awhile since I listened to Jean Luc. Also check out the original Mahavishnu Orchestra, Jan Hammer on Keyboards and Billy Cobham on drums give John players who can keep up with him. Best Jazz Rock Fusion band I ever saw for sure. Enjoy! 🎵

Ponty is excellent. I got to see him play with Return to Forever in Grand Prairie Tx in 2011. It was a great show, and Zappa Plays Zappa opened up for RTF, also a great performance. Yeah Nick, that's where I know this song from, Rite of Strings.

Wow, you just took me back 46 years to Austin, Texas where this album was in regular rotation at my house when it came out in '76! I hadn't listened to it in decades. Daryl Stuermer's very John McLaughlinesque guitar solo came right back to me, and Patrice Rushen's fine piano solo too. Loved your reactions. Thanks so much!

While I've heard the name since the 70's. I've never really sat down and listened to Jean-Luc Ponty. I am reminded of a couple others I have listened to, tho... Dixie Dregs (for the guitar/violin/keyboard combo) Ottmar Liebert (for the acoustic guitar) I would recommend checking out both of them in the future. Dixie Dregs is a wide mix of styles, while Ottmar Liebert seems to primarily focus on flamenco (with some others, too).

VIOLINS ! WE NEED MORE VIOLINS IN ROCK OR JAZZFUSION OR ….. Everybody knows Kansas, the older ones will remember It’s a beautiful day (White bird), Southerners will remember Charlie Daniels Band (Orange Blossom Special) music experts will know East of Eden (Jig-a-jig), classic fans will know Nigel Kennedy (Jazz meets classic), if a violin bow is good enough, watch Jimmy Page’s Dazed and confused on The Song remains the same. If you want to see beautiful artists play violin music, the gents should check out Vanessa Mae, the ladies should have a look at David Garrett. And the ones who love romantic violin music, should check Ms Lucia Micarelli on stage with Chris Botti, I don’t know why, but watching the passion of her play, makes me want to cry a little. (see my other comment for link) Breeeaaathe …. Ok, back to Mr Ponty. The first song I ever heard of him, was at the rockdisco in my home area (called the Musical Box) when they played the live version of Mirage, maybe his most “commercial” but still a great song, never got it out of my mind ever since. And when my jazzfusion journey started at early 2000s, I bought 10 of his albums of the 70s and 80s plus another great live recording - Jean Luc Ponty live at Semperoper in Dresden/Germany - great concert, great sound. And I also have another version of the DVD, Nick mentioned, it’s called DiMeola, Ponty & Clarke live at Montreux 1994, also a great concert. My resume: Listen to more Jean Luc Ponty - a great artist.

Jean-Luc was also the violinist in the mark 2 version of Mahavishnu Orchestra, although I always preferred Jerry Goodman in that band who Jean -Luc replaced. I love his playing on the Zappa song Willie The Pimp from Hot Rats. Zappa is a huge rabbit hole to fall down but Hot Rats would be a great introduction. Nick would love it, liking fusion as he does, and there's some stellar guitar work from Frank. I'd also recommend anything from Franks mid 70's albums, Apostrophe, One Size Fits All, Overnite Sensation or Zoot Allures (especially Black Napkins from Zoot Allures). Probably my favourite song guitar wise is Watermelon In Easter Hay though (from Joe's Garage), just beautiful), it was played at a friends funeral a few years ago, I was in bits by the end. Loved this one by the way.

This album had jazz pianist Patrice Rushen and guitarist Daryl Stuermer on it. The song before this, "Is Once Enough", is rockier and a good example of Stuermer's electric guitar playing. Stuermer later played on Phil Collins' albums, and joined Genesis. Ponty has a great solo on the Y.Tube video of Frank Zappa's "Dupree's Paradise" live in Stockholm 1973.

Renaissance is one of his iconic songs - From the Aurora album! I saw him during this period at The Golden Bear in Huntington Beach! Same lineup as on the Aurora album! Patrice Rushen would go solo and later have a hit with the song "Forget Me Not"! Tom Fowler would play with Zappa later (as Ponty himself had and would again as well as be in Mahavishnu Orchestra). And of course Daryl Stuermer would go one to play with Genesis and Phil Collins among others.

Hi Guys, lovely reaction, JLP, what a virtuoso! And what about Patrice Rushen on piano and Daryl Stuermer on acoustic guitar, extraordinary! Both were very in demand session players at the time and with playing like that you can see why. Were you aware JLP teamed up with Jon Anderson of Yes to form the Anderson Ponty Band and they released a live album called "All in a matter of time" in 2015, both in their early 70's? Included on that album was a version of Renaissance with lyrics written and sung by Jon, the song was renamed "Renaissance of the sun" you should check it out and that album, it's excellent. Also, still in the jazz/fusion world, I think I recall you reacted to "5G" from Bill Bruford's album masterpiece "One of a kind" if you haven't already heard that album which of course features Alan Holdsworth I urge you to, it is phenomenal. "Hells Bells" opens the album in explosive fashion and features a fantastic Holdsworth solo, happy reacting, Cheers

Well this is quite lovely, isn't it? Big thumbs up for this. I don't know a whole lot of Jean-Luc Ponty other than some of his work with Frank Zappa.

The piano player is an accomplished musician in her own right. Patrice Rushen is a excellent vocalist well versed in R&B music having a slew of hit albums in the late 70's and 80's!!!!

That'll teach me not to post without double checking. Jean -Luc is on Hot Rats, but not Willie The Pimp, the violinist on that is Sugarcane Harris. God senility is a terrible thing😄Still a great track though with the added bonus of Captain Beefheart on vocals.

It's not bad, mixing up musicians ... it's more important to know them all and Hot Rats is my favourite Zappa album; I have 11 JLP albums, but still look for Sugar Cane Harris, not willing to pay 20 Euros+ for old music , when you get other stuff for 6 - 10, I'm patient and a record collection is never ready :-)

This is embarrassing. I deleted my previous post as my memory failed me . I will cut myself some slack though as 1976 was a long time ago. We saw Renaissance at Red Rocks in 1977. Not Jean Luc Ponte. Please accept my humble apology. 😳

@@NicknLex so the Red Rocks list does not list Renaissance as appearing in 77 (at least the one I saw) I did find a Renaissance DB that does show a RR concert first week of August 1977. That DB also shows the next 2 Renaissance dates in August after RR as having Ponty appearing with them as well. I also found a poster online that lists Renaissance with special guest Jean Luc Ponty.

JLP is an example of good musicians beeing enemies to good music. Too much show-off, too little music.
