Did you know that you can self-pollinate cacti that are normally self-incompatible? I just recently tried it and it seems to work. You cut the pistil stalk at a sharp angle then immediately dust the open wound with pollen. Apparently this method works on many plants because the pistil recognizes pollen from the same plant and inhibits it.

When night flowering cacti bloom it’s very special indeed. I find giving a few feeds with tomato food in mid spring will help them bloom. I remember the first time I seen one bloom it was something I will never forget back in 1988. It was in the kitchen when it opened my wife had made my sandwich’s for lunch for the following day. my sandwiches were jam & when I started eating them the next day all I could taste was the sent of the cactus bloom. The sent had gone through the cling film & into the bread.

Thats so wonderful that you could taste the cactus bloom in your sandwiches, the scent of the blooms really are so incredible and the scent is so gorgeous I wish I could bottle it as perfume, its better than the best bottle of Chanel haha, the blooms really are so extra special, and tomato feed really does help to encourage blooming as its high in potassium, thanks so much Derek for your wonderful comment and for watching and have a fantastic plant powered day XXXX

Hi Lyn, I hope you and Hans are doing well, and that your plants are coping well with the winter rest and humidity. I am putting a Selenicereus Grandiflorus cutting in the soil today, in a bit too large pot with my large Epiphyllum Strictum, keeping my fingers crossed that they will get along together. You keep me realistic about when I should expect a bloom though : ) I'm not potting it up in ideal soil/pot size just because there are too many pots in my flat now, and it will be a 'live or let go' situation : ) Best wishes from Dublin
