Aragorn, He begins hiding his true self, getting very little respect from the people he is protecting, but he is always working for the good of all. Through a lifetime of struggle he eventually becomes who he was meant to be, the King! I (we) are on the same journey of becoming who God wants me (us) to be.

My favorite character changes depending on my mood. But among them are Aragorn, Legolas, Galadriel, Eowyn, Samwise, and Gandalf.

What a coincidence! I just started reading through the Lord of the Ring again! I usually read it every couple of years. John’s mention of it will help me to be more thoughtful about what I am reading and how it can apply to my journey through this life.

What a beautiful teaching today. It seems like you sighed thinking you may have put a lot of Willard in this one, but you really didn't. Those words were needed. I've heard many explanations of "meaning" that i never understood, but this was beautiful and and intelligible. AMDG

Is Sam also saying, “because God has been faithful in the past we can have hope in this present darkness.”? The idea of story is somehow more effective in providing hope and endurance than just “set your heart and mind on things above”. Thanks!! And I laughed a little about the “date of death.”:) Is there really such a thing as a date shake?!?!

There may have been a scene in the movie that was edited out where Frodo and Sam came across this wise man and asked for some simple directions, This wise man had white hair and a gentle demeanor. They knew they could trust his Direction. I believe his name was John Ortberg. I love story at 65 I've had quite an adventure myself, I've written myself into a story which is a historical fiction fantasy, I would venture to Guess that John has had a great adventure story as well!

I’ve often said “I’m ashamed of things I’ve done but I’m not ashamed of my story because it’s a story of redemption”. I’m now going to add … “that has meaning”. Thanks for the encouraging word.
