Jeremy, my father was a commercial and industrial electrician. When my parents moved from their house to a much smaller apartment, he gifted me with his 7 1/4 in Skil circular saw. Every time I see you sawing the OSB sheets, it reminds me of him. I still use it today, even though the saw is at least 75 years old! It really speaks for the company and I'm glad you chose a tool that will last you years! Fathering 101!!! LOL! But you're right! If you can't have fun with your kids.....you do remind me of my father! He was the type that told a joke or pun with a straight face - in French we say "face de bois" - wood face. If I might make a suggestion: lay a piece of plastic over your trap door to keep the water (rain) out of the crawl space until you have a roof over the area. Leave at least 6 in of plastic past the edges and either staple down to the OSB or rocks. When it rains and wind picks up.....better safe than sorry. Take care, stay safe and keep building. Love your optimism and commitment to family and couple life.

Suggestion: Hinges on the crawl space hatch. Simpler to open & you don’t need to place it somewhere. If hinged next to or near a wall, you will have more room when open. A hook is good to keep it open.

Having been a builder and contractor for years I can tell you that just adding that small bit to the thickness of your flooring makes the job so much harder work. Most floors are 5/8 to 3/4 thick but 1 inch is a great floor and tough to put down. You have done a great job of it. You have along way to go yet so letting go of the expectations will make your progress so much more enjoyable. Do your best each day and celebrate the progress. There will be good days and not so good days to come, this is a marathon and not a sprint. Hang in tight together and you will get there to the end. Well done guys..
@wingman31k
@wingman31k 3 года назад
Libraiis - yes, you are exactly right. But as a contractor, you also know that Building Developers can also be cheap. A 3/4inch subfloor costs $45 per sheet. THIS 1inch or so Advantech Subfloor they used is $65 per sheet. One really can't criticize or compliment them for their choice of materials because its $$$ - their $$$.

Just a suggestion for you guys. If you can get a couple of box fans to set in your crawl space to circulate the air it will dry it out a lot quicker. Doing this with eliminate musty smells and the potential for any mold growth, after you place down your sheeting. That's a good job in a week for a good two man crew and you did it with one and Jeremy!

Great job so far, Guys. About that hatch - here's a tip from a professional home inspector that has had to open those hatches for more than twenty years. Take another 1/16 inch off all sides of that hatch. It's not supposed to swell, but when it does anyway it's going to be jammed in there so tight you won't be able to get it out without damaging the edges of it. Jeremy, NO, put down the barrier now! A 2,000 square foot crawlspace will evaporate 22 gallons of air into the atmosphere every 24 hours - even in the driest of seasons. I've seen hundreds of homes where builders opted to put the barrier down last where that decision resulted in disaster. While they left the soil in the crawl uncovered for as little as four months, organic material grew in the crawlspaces and moisture accumulating on the underside of the OSB decks, and on the pony walls and joists, left everything covered with a fine coating of fungi. It's going to take you guys a lot longer than four months to complete that house, so in your case it could get bad. Alternatively, you could go down there with a pump sprayer and treat the framing and underside of the deck with BoraCare, a fungicide, but that will cost a whole lot more than another layer of VB material. During the day when the sun is heating the deck it won't be an issue but at night when it cools off that moisture will condense on the walls of the foundation and the underside of the deck and all of that beautiful engineered lumber - despite the fact there are crawlspace vents. You don't want to trash a new barrier. I get it, but a barrier is cheap - the cost and time involved with dealing with fungi growing all over everything in the crawlspace is not. Cover 100% of that soil! You can always go in there after you're done, sweep up the sawdust and remove all of the construction debris. If at that time it's too dirty and you don't want it that way just thrown down another cover over the first. By the way, you'll get some folks will tell you that code says that you don't have to cover the soil as long as your crawlspace venting is within the accepted ratio. They are right, that is in the code, unfortunately, God has apparently never read a code book and it doesn't work that way in the northwest. I'm glad you've already decided on a barrier, because up here you need vents PLUS a vapor barrier. Mike O'Handley, Edmonds, WA - Founder/Editor - The Inspector's Journal, www.inspectorsjournal.com

just a suggestion. Build all your walls in small sections so the two of you can lift them, they can be joined together by the top plate. that or get someone with a Telehandler and boom to help lift as the are very heavy. Also Mark(chalk will wash off with rain) where your plumbing is coming out of the floor(rough-in) and use 2x6 walls there. It also helps if those walls are not over floor joist. Some plumbing requires special clearance(shower/toilet traps) from joist. measure twice, cut once.

That covered area IS a resource that they have already paid for and they should plan to use it. I have a similar sized crawl space in my house and over the years it has been very handy. Even limited by the size of the hatch there are several good uses for such an area. Long term storage of emergency food in common 55 gallon steel drums(rodent proof) would last a long time in cool dark conditions.

I subscribe right when you guys got to the new property and with every new video you guys make I’m seen a big change, you’re not as serious anymore and now you laugh together so much more, you guys have 4 kids and you flirt with each other like you guys just met I love it. Your in video ads are hilarious. The floor looks amazing congratulations Melissa and Jeremy from Georgia sending lots of love to the entire Souza family ❤️.

I have to say I have enjoyed watching ur videos. U two would be the type of people I would want to hang out with! Ur clowning around reminds me of my brother and myself. Always cracking jokes and driving our spouses insane wondering what we will do next. But I love what ur doing!! Keep em coming!

You should build a small ladder into your crawl space. your extension ladder will be a pain after your closet is completed.

You didn't make it a cellar, but you gave yourself enough room to comfortably install plumbing and electrical, and whatever future needs are necessary. Good planning.
