That's something I notice that the online gamer community ignores: We're a minority. The type of person that follow game news is not your average gaming customer. Even if the online community agrees to boycott a game the larger consumer base is entirely unaware there's a boycott going on. And by the time they're dissapointed with a game they're already anticipating the next release of a Triple A studio.

Live service can be done well. The problem is that it gets abused. The intent of live service is to have a game that continues to grow and evolve in significant ways at the cost of requiring more funds over it's life span. The problem is all the big corporations just see it as a way to get more money out of a product after it's initial release, and they don't put in the effort to make that extra cost worth it. And on top of that, obviously live service doesn't work for just any kind of game. But it gets shoehorned into stuff like AC where it makes no sense just to make more money.

Another gem from my youth is finally dead. Honestly, I think it dies when they released Odyssey. Origins was the last narrative AC and Unity was the last mechanical AC

Franchise died with Unity, for me. Was a fine game when it got patched and everything but I'd had my fill by then and the formula was getting stale. The newer games never caught my interest.

What's harder, make an entire game over the course of 4 years costing 50 million dollars or make 50 skins over the course of 6 months that cost 5 million. Both make about the same revenue in this crazy world.

I don't like the idea of AC as a live service but the core of the franchise has ben so throughly bastardized and mangled that it barely even resemblee what was great about the original couple games so they might as well fire the final bullet.

Odessy and Valhalla were great AC games. They aren’t like the original series run but still it was good. Very good. I wish Unity became successful. We could’ve gotten more ac games that had a fun multiplayer but reviewed over blew the negative press and squandered any chance of success it could’ve gotten. We literally have no one else to blame but reviewers

Everybody wants the live service money Warframe makes, nobody wants to actually do the leg work and build a game and following over several years. Hell fortnite was a bit of a fluke, and GTA Online took a lot of work to get where it is

@@nenadmilovanovic5271 LOL just say you not a fan bruh. It WAS very good and unique, also it changed gaming. It inspired a lot of classic games i'm sure you're a fan of. Ubisoft fired the creator and stole it from him. because he had planned the whole thing out and didn't want to annualizes it. It became a huge hit and ubisoft turned it into madden/2K/COD. Slowly killed it and made it more "casual friendly". now they are gonna squeeze the last ounce of life it has out of it. It had a unique crazy deep story/lore and innovative gameplay. It was in it's own lane and this gained it a massive cult following. Ubisoft slowly turned it into a typical open world hack & slash RPG. Then stuffed it full of micro transactions. Then completely changed it to a point where it was barely recognizable. To bring in casuals and whales.

@@THIZZAVELI 1. I am a fan, I played all games since brotherhood. 2. All interesting lore stuff was killed with Desmond in AC3. 3. Old games were laughably easy and had no developed stealth mechanics. You can beat any combat encounter with just your mouse up until Unity. You can abuse smoke bombs and effectively never get detected. So now that combat is more difficult and stealth actually has mechanics, you call it casual? If anything, new games brought actual challenge into the series, something that was sorely lacking. 4. Take off your rose colored glasses.

Ubisoft is actually killing it. Vallhala was a major hit for them, easily the most sold game in the franchise. Even Breakpoint which was quite bad sold well.

@@nozenkyuzero well the most sold AC games are not about assassins at all (besides Unity). Black Flag, Origins, Odyssey and Valhalla are the most sold. Unity did break 10 million but that could be because it was on discounts very early.

Called it! I had the awful suspicion Valhalla was made by Ubisoft as sort of 'testing ground' for a GAAS single-player game, based on what has been put behind paywalls. Makes sense their next move would a Live Service altogether. On a separate note, this also makes very weary of Gotham Knights. Copying Assassin's Creed new RPG focus on a game, that has focused its selling point on the customization of the 4 characters, makes think _a lot_ of those skins will be also put behind paywalls.

It will I think, because as much as we gamers want Ubisoft to get their act together and go back to being creative, there are a lot of consumers who like the existing model, which is mindless grinding and a vague and terrible storyline disguised as player freedom. I wish I am wrong and the whole f2p live service monetisation heavy trend in gaming dies out and take the whole Ubisoft EA and Activision trifecta with it, but time will tell I guess

@@Darkeus1 well the Avengers game burning at the bottom of the steam lists gives me a little hope. But am still sceptical of the AC. Let’s not forget it’s a huge franchise in gaming where as the Avengers was a movie and it got off to a bad start with uninspired character design in its first trailer. Also i am sceptical because when the AC is pay to play they are making billions in macro transactions. Think if it went f2p consumers will get an excuse to say it’s a f2p they have to include macro transactions. But hopefully it will go the route of Avengers as well and ubi will see the errors of their way and at least try to make amends

And everyone pretends as if they loved the game the whole time. The game is ultimately successful and the fans of the older games complain until the inevitable AC1 remake is released of which completely flops. Calling it now.

This...this is what the gaming industry wanted all along. This is what Microsoft tried to do last gen with those early gamepass titles, what Ubisoft and Bethesda wanted to do last gen, what Sony is working towards this gen (with no success...ahem Destruction Allstars), and what EA has unfortunately been successful at. But damn, didn't expect AC to really go live service, although all AC fans feared this would become reality. RIP AC, the last Ubi franchise I enjoyed. 😢😢😢 As for GTA online, jeez...what do ppl do online? I'm jumped on the other day and was sitting there wondering where the fun was. I use to play it faithfully from 2013-16 and loved it. But it ran its course. So again, what have people been doing the past 4-5 yrs in this outdated game...sit in loading screens???😉

It doesn't change the grind in Valhalla. So why would he? I appreciate his review of the game, as I had similar thoughts on Odyssey as him and I just couldn't do an even grindier game than Odyssey. So that basically saved me some cash, but more importantly - time, which is at a premium once job/family/life hits.

This could be great if done properly, maybe the central hub is the Animus and you have missions in different historical periods where they could be done in single player or in co-op. With each studio adding DLC from different times and places in history.

Honestly, call it Assassins Creed: Animus and have the "real world" be the hub world, then you go into the animus in different time periods and locations. You could collect assassin skins from across time, each season can be a major update with different time periods. Not a bad idea for a game if they do it right.

i think the issue is you guys cant see it. its modern time. the assassins have an HQ now. they are taking the fight to the templars. they are mass recruiting and using the Animus to use the bleed effect to train them. in this live service game you play one of the new recruits and you go into the Animus to train. at the start it could have like 2 settings of 40 hours of gameplay that can be played solo or coop on top of that as you train you can go into the real world and assassin templars in modern time in a modern day story that is also like 40 hours or so at the start of the game also solo or coop. i know most cant see this being a good game but i can see it working if done right. new updates could be new animus settings as well as expanding the story in modern time.

one thing i noticed about live service games is that they never end. like i've never seen a live service game had a definitive ending to its story. they all pretty much just went on until the service for the game ends so now that assassins creed is now becoming a live service , that means the assassins creed storyline will effectively never end.

They made some/published some interesting IPs. AssCreed 1 was novel, AssCreed 2 trilogy was great. Heck even the next ones were not too bad, but you could see the tide changing. Far Cry was another good IP, though the original Far Cry is a far cry from the current state of the game. Ghost Recon was good. Splinter Cell games were amazing. Beyond good and evil another good game. Prince of persia games! And there are more. Point is: there was creativity there... it just got lost in the ALL THE MONEY philosophy. Now creativity, if it didn't already depart, is shackled to the vision of microtransactions, p2w and soon to be live service model. It's like asking a painter to use a toothbrush and toiletpaper as canvas.

I have never played Assassins Creed before, but I actually see this as a right step, or at least the first step in improving their ways. I'm sick of studios churning out a game on a cycle, and we are generally seeing these big franchises adapting this model to make their games more dynamic in how you play. I hate Ubisoft, but they have the raw man power and talent to produce good games, this is a sign that they might actually be changing.

Won't deny, if you had told me that for a while now AC was a live service, i'd probably believe it given the whole xp booster stuff and removal of certain custom/player quests that bypassed said booster. I will say, i can kinda see a concept idea working with a hub then various "games/simulations/times" but that's pretty much all on paper. I can't see that idea working well as an actual game. Plus, I imagine at this point the whole live service thing probably doesn't sit well with alot of players. But hey, there is still solid fanbase behind AC so who knows, maybe they want something like this.

But when I heard Valhalla is just more and more grind without even a great story to back it up... f it! I heard Fenyx is good, and planning to buy the gold edition when it drops to 40 CAD

I agree with Alec. I'm in the small minority of players who played the original Assassin's Creed right after release and didn't particularly like it so I never tried the sequels. This doesn't make me regret my decision.

And maybe they could use this also to reimagine the whole franchise, give it a new starting point which smoothly transitions into Infinity.

As long as the live service doesn’t mess with the story then I’m fine with it. I honestly don’t think it’ll do well & the past AC games being bring Origins, Odyssey, & Valhalla they do have live service things in it which I don’t partake in & I tune out after I finish the story. It might appeal to some people but for me a good, uninterrupted story is required from me
