Technically they're not background singers. They both usually have their own verses in the songs. But Will.i.Am and Fergie got all the shine so Apl.De.Ap and Taboo did more ad libbing, which was reflected in the intro. But to label them background singers (and they're really hip hop artists) is wrong.
