Absolutely loved Brother Bro's analysis of The Zone of Interest and agree with everything you guys said. This is not my favorite movie of the year just because of an entertainment factor, but it's definitely the one that's saying the most and it would be a worthy best picture winner in my opinion
No way, not offended at all Brother Bro. Thank you for talking about something people rarely do because they feel guilty feeling bad for animals when so many humans have it so shitty. You were spot on.
Thanks for your support of animal rights, really well put. I think a lot of the times people are kinda shy talking about this subject as directly as you did, so to me that was very powerful. I agree that animals are just like us and our denial is insanely ugly. Hope the attitudes will change
Re: The Zone of Interest discussion. It was bold of you to say it, but yes, very much agree, especially regarding the pet comment. To be ok with eating meat requires one to have a very particular set of morals to differentiate between human life and animal life (which, for some, can be on a specturm when considering animals with more complex brains: monkeys, dolphins etc.) To own a pet and be disgusted at the thought of anything happening to said pet (meanwhile also being a meat eater and turning a blind eye to the meat industry) is problematic to say the least - certainly, it is not a morally or intellectually consistent stance to take.
The last part of your comment is wildly unrealistic. Thats like saying caring for your own baby but not actively helping all the countries in a world where children die of hunger every hour is problematic. It is sad for sure but villianizing people for it is strange.
@@samnovak3024 No, your analogy doesnt work. By eating meat, you are actively contributing to animal's being killed and mistreated. By caring for your own baby, you are not actively participating in the murder of other children! Like I said, if one is ok with the murder of animals, that is a legitimate stance to take (and I referenced a spectrum in my comment because to many, killing an ant is very different to killing a pig, and killing a pig is very different to killing a monkey). Owning a pet, in virtually every case, shows one cares about the treatment of animals. Therefore, pointing out the hypocrisy between caring for the life of a dog, meanwhile being ok with the torture and slaughter of a cow, for example, is a legitimate argument to make.
10 The Boy and The Heron 9 Spider man : across the spider verse 8 May December 7 Past Lives 6 Fallen Leaves 5 Killers Of The Flower Moon 4 The Holdovers 3 The Zone of Interest 2 Oppenheimer 1 Anatomy Of a Fall
Brother Bro! LOVED your thoughts on The Zone of Interest, animal cruelty, and speciesism. As an animal lover, current pescetarian and future vegan, I really appreciated your stance.
LOVE your insights on Zone of Interest. Appreciate how you model holding nuance, and for inviting us to interrogate capitalism, speciesism, class, race, all these harmful structures, and our own complicity within and/or willingness to be more clear sighted.
Anatomy of a Fall, she is clearly and deliberately shown to be not guilty from the outset. There is a (very) wide shot of when the boy and the dog discover the body, in that shot she is shown to be genuinely alarmed. She is on her own, with no audience, she is not pretending for anyone. This seems like a very deliberate choice on the part of the director, there is no need at all to include this shot, she could just as easily appear at the scene of the death, then throughout the rest of the film her behaviour and attitudes would be very ambiguous. For me the only reason for this shot is to demonstrate her innocence.
I saw it multiple times on 70MM IMAX and every time we get to that final scene, and I see Einstein in color, I am STUNNED that three hours have passed. It’s crazy to me that a movie that long can feel like it goes so quickly.
Thank you for Anatomy of a fall review, Sandra Huller gave Hands down the Performance of the Year (male or female) and she was robbed at The Oscars. also there were many best Supporting Snubbs : Milo Machado-Graner or Swann Arlaud could easily replace Ryan Gosling and Mark Ruffalo for me
If anyone's offended by what you said about The Zone of Interest, then I don't know why they bother watching movies or how they ended up on this channel. Film inspires thought, that's what film criticism and discussion is all about.
10. Poor Things 9. May December 8. The Holdovers 7. Killers of the flower moon 6. Oppenheimer 5. Past Lives 4. Afire 3. All of us Strangers 2. About Dry Grasses 1. The Zone Of Interest
I agree with most of your choices, but the movie that still lingers in my mind from 2023 is the Irish film, “An Cailín Ciúin”-“The Quiet Girl”-which I first saw a year ago, and then went to see three more times at local cinemas because of the powerful emotional effect it had upon me. I retired a few years ago after spending forty years working with troubled children and their families, so this deceptively simple story of a nine-year-old girl from a poor and neglectful home being sent off to spend the summer with her mother’s cousin, a childless, middle-aged woman and her husband who run a dairy farm in the Irish countryside, really hit close to home with me, bringing back many bittersweet memories of the children and parents I used to work with, among them a pair of foster parents who operated a dairy farm, just like the Kinsellas do in the movie. The film was directed by Colm Bairéad, who also wrote the screenplay adapted from the short story, “Foster”, by Claire Keegan, who also wrote, “Small Things Like These”, upon which Cillian Murphy’s new film is based. For some reason, “The Quiet Girl” continues to affect me in a way that no film has in a long, long time.
Wow thanks for bringing this film to my attention with this beautiful review. I’ve worked with many children of trauma so will definitely check this film out.
@@hm2011100 Thank you for your comment. I'm always happy to help connect someone to "The Quiet Girl" film, or the Claire Keegan short story, "Foster", from which it was adapted. I left you a longer comment the other day with my own advice on how to watch "The Quiet Girl", but for some reason it was deleted or disappeared somehow. Anyway, you should be able to find the film on streaming services somewhere. I'm sure you'll find it a rewarding experience.
Thankful for that entire talk about zone of interest. I have seen that film twice and yes even though it has gotten critical acclaim I wish the conversations and all these ideas, emotions and intellectual theories about violence, guilt, distraction, distance of the personal and private and the public etc would have more influence on the public. They are so so important and I wish this film would have breeched mainstream discussion way more than Barbie or Oppenheimer but sadly that won’t happen probably exactly because if it’s themes.
Top 10 films that meant the most to me in 2023: 10. Poor Things 9. Perfect Days 8. The Zone of Interest 7. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse 6. The Iron Claw 5. May December 4. The Holdovers 3. Anatomy of a Fall 2. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 1. Past Lives
I’m actually not offended by your comments about TZOI, and actually agree with you. However, I was perplexed by your comment about the weapon having been used TWICE
1. Fallen Leaves 2. Poor Things 3. Evil Does Not Exist 4. Afire 5. The Promised Land 6. Anatomy of a Fall 7. The Boy and The Heron 8. The Holdovers 9. All of us Strangers 10. Napoleon
Great picks as always. Really looking forward to rewatching About Dry Grasses when it’s available VOD. I don’t disagree at all with your vegan/animal assessment - it’s essentially a form of torture and mass killing we’ve chosen to ignore for the sake of a corrupt food pyramid. I still eat meat sometimes but that just exemplifies my complicity.
I've been waiting for your top ten video! I don't think of you guys as "film critics", per se, but I think you both give really thoughtful and astute analyses of movies and I always love hearing your take. I also really appreciate your thoughts on Zone of Interest, too. Only a lazy interpretation would say you're comparing animals to people. Zone of Interest, like the best of movies, makes us reflect on our own lives and behaviors in valuable ways.
My PERSONAL top 10: 10. The Zone of Interest (super important i will literally never return to it but i also can't find any flaws) 9. A Thousand and One 8. Beau is Afraid 7. The Holdovers 6. May December 5. The Iron Claw 4. The Killer 3. How To Blow Up A Pipeline 2. Oppenheimer 1. Killers of the Flower Moon Poor Things and Past Lives just didn't hit me like that. I respect them as movies and like them a lot but I wasn't head over heels for either of them. Spider-Man as well. I liked it a lot but it just didn't hit like the first one. John Wick was super good but I think I just have sequel fatique. Shoutout to Infinity Pool as well, just some sicko shit but I like Possessor more. Maestro was fun and I liked it but it just completely pales in comparison to something like Tar. And I didn't get a chancd to see a couple of other movies that I think might've made my list like Perfect Days, Godzilla Minus One, and a couple others.
Haven't had the chance so far to watch The Boy and the Heron or Spiderverse. Here's my list. 10) The Covenant 9) Quiz Lady 8) Elemental 7) Maestro 6) Super Mario Bros. Movie 5) Barbie 4) Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 3) The Iron Claw 2) Poor Things 1) John Wick Chapter 4 (yeah, I liked it that much!)
When you said you'd likely be riveted if Oppenheimer were about the making of the jelly bean, I thought about what if Christopher Nolan had directed the Pop Tarts movie. In the lead up to the release of Barbie, I found myself defending the film's potential profundity due to Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach being behind it. Unfortunately, I didn't wind up feeling it was nearly as profound as I expected it to be. I thought the film's tone would drastically shift from what we saw in the trailer once Barbie left Barbieland, but that didn't happen. Vegan chicken nuggets exist, and they are yummy.
1. Past Lives 2. The Boy and the Heron 3. The Peasants 4. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse 5. Asteroid City 6. Perfect Days 7. Poor Things 8. Monster 9. The Holdovers 10. Oppenheimer 1. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Films i haven't seen that could make it in this 10: Killers of the Flower Moon, The Zone of Interest, The Iron Claw, The Boy and the Heron, Godzilla Minus One, Blackberry, Society of the Snow
My Top 10: 10. All of Us Strangers 9. Monster 8. The Zone of Interest 7. Perfect Days 6. The Killer 5. Oppenheimer 4. The Holdovers 3. John Wick Chapter 4 2. The Boy and the Heron 1. Killers of the Flower Moon
I honestly was struggling to make this cuz there were a lot of bangers this year but here's my (probably not gonna stick) list: 1. The Zone of Interest 2. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse 3. Past Lives 4. Anatomy of a Fall 5. Oppenheimer 6. Perfect Days 7. May December 8. Monster 9. The Boy and the Heron 10. Bottoms (the real comedy of the year)
My top 12: 1) 20 Days in Mariupol 2) The Zone of Interest 3) The Quiet Girl 4) The Eight Mountains 5) Alcarras 6) All of Us Strangers 7) The Deepest Breath 8) Past Lives 9) How to Have Sex 10) May December 11) Passages 12) Of an Age
I liked your analysis on Zone. However, I see it as more about capitalism and classicism. Something that affects US ALL no matter race, gender, dietary consumption, etc. Where just because we have the things we need, that doesn't mean other people have the necessary requirements that they need and are literally dying because of it. We're turning a blind eye instead of trying to do something about it and help out.

There are so many readings and interpretations of the zone of interest. Veganism is one I hadn't considered. I had definitely thought a lot about the ecological genocide that is occuring due to climate change and urban sprawl. So many layers. Great analysis
Here are the 10 movies I’ve watched (still need to watch some): 1.Oppenheimer 2.Society of the Snow 3.Poor things 4.Teachers lounge 5.Maestro 6.American Fiction 7.Air 8.The creator 9.Saltburn 10.Rustin
I never really thought about the animal rights issues in The Zone, however when watching the film, I was very aware of how anxious the family pet was all the time. I was also aware of the dogs barking in the camp, they seemed so distressed. So I appreciate that discussion as there was always something bugging me about the animals that I couldn’t quite put a finger on. a

fully agree with brother bro's analogy to how we turn a blind eye or passively participate in the brutal ways animals are treated. for me, the most prominent comparison to be made here is with the genocide happening in Gaza. zone of interest was also my fav film of the year
Haha, as a vegan I was NOT offended. I hope others took a message about the quiet evils of consumerism. Thanks for the great recommendations. What most jumped out at me were Rye Lane, Perfect Days and About Dry Grasses. I was happy to see some May December love in here. That’s one of the biggest snubs at the Oscars this year. Granted it got screenplay, I think supporting actor and picture were shoe-ins.
1: The Zone of Interest 2: Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse 3: Past Lives 4: Oppenheimer 5: Anatomy Of A Fall Honorable Mention: May December Haven’t seen: About Dry Grasses, Perfect Days, Monster, The Boy And The Heron, Godzilla Minus One, The Iron Claw, Society Of The Snow, All of Us Strangers, Asteroid City, and John Wick: Chapter 4
Thank you thank you! I thought I was the only one who thought Milo Machado Graner should have gotten more nominations. During the watch, I was really impressed by his performance, and after the movie, it left a lasting impression.
My favorite movies of 2023 1. Poor Things 2. John Wick chapter four 3. Killers of the Flower Moon 4. A Haunting in Venice 5. Napoleon 6. Barbie 7. Golda 8. The Pope's Exorcist 9. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny 10. Magic Mike's Last Dance So there.

This is the problem with these top 10 lists. So subjective. Other than Anatomy of a fall and the holdovers I either did not like or did not see every movie on their list. I would have included poor things as well as other movies sometimes with not great reviews in my top 10.
1. Spiderverse 2. Oppie 3. Guardians 3 4. John Wick 4 5. Afire 6. Rye Lane 7. Fallen Leaves 8. Are You There God? Its Me, Margaret 9. Actual People 10. Beau Is Afraid
