Agreed! I was at a restaurant and Under Pressure started playing. I almost had to excuse myself because I was tearing up and about to lose it…and that was a month after seeing it. Best film of the year. No contest.
I’m a 34 year old male and I cry all the time at movies and TV. In fact both of Paul Mescal’s projects (Aftersun and Normal People) made me cry or outright sob in a movie theater this year. Luckily no one sees movies like Aftersun in theaters around my way so no one saw me 😂.
My hand is WAY up as one of the people who uncontrollably sobbed at the ending of Aftersun, and still uncontrollably sobs while I continue to re-watch the ending to this day (to torture myself, clearly) . It's my #1 film of the year and I think that's about the 100th time I've either written that down somewhere. or have said it out loud to someone. It hurts, but in such a good way. I feel cathartic after watching this, over and over again. Something else I've said, as a film lover, I was moved, as a filmmaker, I was educated. Charlotte Wells...Damn.
y'all, even your explanations of aftersun and EEAAO got me teary eyed. the fact that merely talking about these films bring up all the feels...total absolute masterpieces.
Can I just say that I love to see how nicely your channel is growing?! I wish I could remember the subscriber count back when I joined, but it was definitely a lot lower than it is now. I feel like it was less than 5k. Keep up the great work!
1. Bones and All 2. The Northman 3. Top Gun 4. Banshees of Inisherin 5. Babylon 6. Aftersun 7. The Batman 8. All Quiet 9. Decision to Leave 10. Barbarian -- haven’t seen Tar, The Whale Triangle of Sadness or The Fablemans which could all potentially crack the list
My top 10: 1- Babylon 2- The Fabelmans 3- The Batman 4- Tár 5- The Swimmers 6- 45 do Segundo Tempo 7- Top Gun: Maverick 8- She Said 9- Cha Cha Real Smooth 10- Eduardo e Mônica
So enjoyed hearing your choices, guys. I agreed with so many of your choices, and yet realized how much generational factors affect what moves us individually and corporally. I am in my early 50s, a die-hard cinephile, and yet, for reasons that more than likely stem from my position and age in life, led me to be horrified that something like TAR was just an honorable mention for you guys. Or that All Quiet on the Western Front was not even on your honorable mention. But it goes to show how your particular stage in life so affects what moves you most and speaks to what you are going through at the time (I would so love to have a conversation with you, Cole, about those things that are evolving in your particular life journey to which you alluded at one point). But you guys are so very articulate for your age and so adept at speaking about what moves and excites you that I can’t help but feel the infectious spirit of your enthusiasm, even when some of your choices for the best of the best mystify and yet thrill me. And, yes, that ending in Aftersun was cathartically devastating, in a way that really can’t be expressed in words. Bravo, dudes!!
I certainly agree with you about Tar, I’m a bit shocked it failed to make either top ten, but to each their own. My list deviated considerably from theirs, with the exception of Aftersun, Bones and All, and EEAAO. I loved Tar and I am certainly older than these two (34), but I think it transcends generational sensibilities.
I am not a huge fan of nominating kids with adults, it is not comparable... However, if we are gonna do it, Eden Dambrine and Gabriel LaBelle were better than Corio.
@@filmfan22 I liked it very much. I can see why he was nominated. The film leaves you thinking about mental health, love, and the bond between a father and daughter.
My top 10!! 1. Aftersun 2. Tár 3. The Fabelmans 4. Everything Everywhere All at Once 5. Triangle of Sadness 6. Bones and All 7. The Banshees of Inisherin 8. Avatar: The Way of Water 9. Top Gun: Maverick 10. Babylon
I’m really glad that Bros was able to work for you guys, but good god that movie was such a disappointment for my gay ass. I just thought for a film that talks a lot of the importance of queer history, it does seem to take a lot of condescending jabs towards queer culture and history disguised as jokes.
*My top 10* 10. All Quiet on the Western Front 9. Triangle of Sadness 8. The Quiet Girl 7. Top Gun: Maverick 6. Bones and All 5. The Northman 4. The Banshees of Inisherin 3. Aftersun 2. Decision to Leave 1. Tár
1. Broker 2. Decision to Leave 3. The Banshees of Inisherin 4. Everything Everywhere All At Once 5. TÁR 6. Prey 7. She Said 8. See How They Run 9. Bodies Bodies Bodies 10. Scream 5 Honorable Mentions: The Menu, The Northman, The Batman, Turning Red, & Top Gun: Maverick
Surprised to see Moonage Daydream here but man I’m a glad.. just loved how it was a documentary, fashion show, art gallery and a concert all in one. So damn unique just like Bowie
Everything Everywhere. Puss in Boots Last Wish. Aftersun. RRR. Women Talking. That's my Top 5. This was such a great, insane year for movies!! I had so much fun
_My top ten of 2022_ 1. The Beatles: Rooftop Concert IMAX 2. Everything Everywhere All At Once 3. The Banshees of Inisherin 4. Nightmare Alley 5. The Northman 6. Glass Onion 7. Watcher 8. The Menu 9. Fire of Love 10. Top Gun: Maverick _Honourable mentions:_ - Moonage Daydream - Aftersun - Barbarian - Operation Mincemeat - Decision to Leave - Blonde - Fresh - You Won’t Be Alone - The Batman - Hatching - Mad God
My too 10: 1) Aftersun 2) TÀR 3) The Fabelmans 4) To Leslie 5) Women Talking 6) EEAAO 7) Babylon 8) Banshees of Inisherin 9) Empire of light 10) Triangle of sadness
My top 10 (for now): 10. All Quiet 9. The Menu 8. To Leslie 7. Nope 6. Emily the Criminal 5. Argentina, 1985 4. Marcel the Shell 3. Aftersun 2. The Whale 1. EEAAO
@@misjathecinemalover Thanks! I know the whale at two is controversial but something about what they were able to do with a single room and such few characters was so impressive to me. I was bawling at the end which I’ve never done in a movie theater haha
So glad to see Joyland get mentioned, hands down one of the best movies I saw in 2022. At the film festival I went to I had some time between Aftersun and Close (definitely a day full of crying) so I went to the screening for this on a whim. Took me by surprise and blew me away. My top 10 would be: 10. Dual 9. Bones & All 8. The Menu 7. Babylon 6. Nope/Marcel The Shell 5. Bodies Bodies Bodies 4. EEAAO 3. Joyland 2. Aftersun 1. Close Honorable mentions: Decision to Leave, Attachment, White Noise, Viking, EO, You Won't Be Alone and The House.
Your top 10 is exclusively LGBT+ thematic or LGBT+ friendly, which is great, but there are other amazing films. The Banshees of Inisherin, All Quiet on the Western Front and Triangle of Sadness are peak cinema.
@@manantial773 What do you mean? There's only one exclusively thematically LGBT+ movie (Joyland) + 6/10 of these I saw at film festivals, I didn't go out seeking for them. Having a LGBT character doesn't make a movie inherently an LGBT movie, they're simply just characters existing who's sexuality has nothing to do with the plot nor furthers it. I already have been Banshees and loved it (Colin Farrell is my favourite actor), didn't care for the other two though.
my top 10 1. The Batman 2. Glass Onion 3. The Fallout 4. EEAAO 5. Aftersun 6. Wakanda Forever 7. Close 8. Top Gun Maverick 9. The Fabelmans 10. Puss in Boots The Last Wish
Banshees really hits home when you are in your 30's, your closest friend gets married and has a kid, while you live a childfree life, but he doesn't talk to you anymore, thus the friendship is pretty much over.
Tip about TIFF: The audience reacts extremely well to literally every movie. Over more than 100 movies over the years I can only think of 2 or 3 that they didn't lol.
Top 10 1. TAR 2. RRR 3. Top Gun: Maverick 4. Hit the Road 5. Banshees of Inisherin 6. All Quiet on the Western Front 7. Official Competition 8. The Northman 9. Argentina, 1985 10. The Batman
I really liked the ending to Triangle of Sadness because depending on what you think happens at the end, it’s very telling of what you think about capitalism and societal norms.
My top 10: 1. Aftersun 2. Moonage Daydream 3. Banshees of Inisherin 4. EEAAO 5. Bones and All 6. Fire of Love 7. Vortex 8. Saint Omer 9. Babylon 10. Triangle of Sadness
My top 10: 1. Bardo 2. Everything Everywhere All at once 3. Aftersun 4. The Banshees of Inisherin 5. Babylon 6. White Noise 7. Decision to Leave 8. Triangle of Sadness 9. Guillermo del Toro's: Pinocchio 10. All Quiet on the Western Front
Joyland a Pakistani Movie, faced a lot of criticism coming out some theatres weren't showing the screening due to it's controversial topic it tackled in my Country but really happy to see it's recognized by other countries and in the Oscars...
My top 10: 10. Tár 9. The Whale 8. Triangle of Sadness 7. Aftersun 6. Banshees of Inisherin 5. Nope 4. Top Gun: Maverick 3. Everything Everywhere All at Once 2. All Quiet on the Western Front 1. Decision to Leave
I'm waiting for a cat video. I recall the cat getting spooked during the SAG awards, especially when Jamie Lee Curtis won best supporting actress, and you guys were going nuts! Anyway, would love to see kitty being introduced.
Mine are: 10. Top Gun: Maverick 9. Marcel the Shell with Shoes On 8. RRR 7. Bardo: False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths 6. Aftersun 5. Moonage Daydream 4. Three Thousand Years of Longing 3. Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio 2. Tár 1. Everything Everywhere All at Once
I saw Bros in cinema. It was funny and is worth watching but I think the entire museum subplot perfectly encapsulates a lot of the criticism of the film and Eichner in general. It does the exact thing it claims to be critiquing. Bros is fun but Fire Island was better, IMO. I'm glad both films exist though! Anyway, my favourite films of 2022 were Belle, Alcarràs, Lullaby, Bones and All and Official Competition.
I thought I was the only one with Pinocchio in my top 5 1. All Quiet 2. Banshees 3. EEAAO 4. Barbarians 5. Pinocchio 6. Fabelmans 7. Women Talking 8. Nope 9. Bones and All 10. Babylon Have not seen Triangle of Sadness or Aftersun

I was never put off by the marketing for Bro's. It looked sweet and funny. I just never got a chance to see the film. But I haven't had a chance to see anything but Elvis and Banshees from last year so..
My #1 movie would be Aftersun for sure. I remember seeing it in theaters, and that when the credits rolled I bawled my eyes out because I watched it when I just turned 11 myself a week ago. It was an amazing experience and it had an ending that I will always keep somewhere in my heart. I’m still thinking about it right now.
@Sixty Nine (what a username😏) No! But I am actually 11 and I watch movies on a daily basis. I think cinema is a way to escape from boring reality and that helps me a lot.

Highlight of the century was running into Charlotte Wells on a plane and getting to gush about how much Aftersun had been on my mind and tongue since I watched it last week. Everything Everywhere is still number one on my list because it’s so damn rewatchable and makes me feel something new and different every time, but only by a narrow margin. 2022 was a fucking fantastic year for cinema.
Ben Wishaw was robbed of a supporting nomination. The man has such an empathetic and understated performance style. When he starts to cry, I cry. Also, Bros was a based pick. My Top 10 10. 1:25 I watched Triangle of Sadness without knowing anything about it, and I certainly wouldn’t have guessed it was supposed to be a comedy. It was more like a weird drama with oddball characters.
I don't. The closest are Avatar: The Way of Water and Top Gun: Maverick. The rest of the best picture nominees are not in my top 10. I have not seen Triangle of Sadness though.
@@manantial773 Are CODA, Spotlight, Silver Linings Playbook, The Help, Definitely Maybe, Promising Young Woman, Shutter Island all commercial films? If so, then yes. What are examples of good independent films?
@@tonyg76 Yes, all those are commercial films with the exception of Promising Young Woman. The Banshees of Inisherin, Aftersun, Triangle of Sadness, Women Talking, Corsage, Close, Holy Spider, Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, The Quiet Girl, Saint Omer, Alcarras... And all those are recent...

Honestly props for shouting out Hellraiser, it's pretty underappreciated. Not many ppl talk about it, but it's actually like the best one in series since the 1987 original.
