Ahhh *wipes tear* nooo… if you have only one combat between rests its fine, but even at high levels constant temp hp add up A LOT, and more to the point, everyone has advantage to initiative and heavy armor proficiency. There’s definitely diminishing returns on the value, but when your base value add is “ruin power scaling” diminishing returns matter less. More than two characters with the dip is overkill, but if I was building Wisdom anyway, I would consider the dip just for advantage to Initiative.

And everyone plays variant Human for the extra feat, and/or other races that also don't have darkvision for racial balancing. Now, a Party that should be stumbling round in the dark or carrying torches and magical light with a big "here we are sign" are instead _"we own the night."_

Highly recommend 1 level in Order Cleric aka "Bachelor's in Management" on any caster. Heavy armor, Command, Heroism, an extra proficiency, and Voice of Authority. A build with an Order dip and Vortex Warp can drop a Swashbuckler next to a guy and have them Sneak Attack all on the same turn

@@yuvalgabay1023 if they ban order cleric they probably ban over a third of playable content honestly. Order cleric is good, but definitely not entering problematic territory.

@@bonzwah1 i seen many dms ban order. Most dm i seen ban order , twilight and Corno wizard(whit the crono wizard 10 level ability being such an op ability i can se why) and moon druids. I didn't say im for it. I sayed i seen it alot

My next character is based on my ADHD: a bladesinging wizard with an immediate dip into barbarian. It's not meant to be super optimized, but the idea is she can hyperfocus on spells and rages when that concentration is broken.

You say it’s not optimal but bladesinger with barb dip is actually a pretty fun and optimal combination. There’s actually a weird stigma around bladesinger that they are supposedly “bad” because they are a squishy melee, but there’s nothing stopping them from staying ranged then going into melee when forced with Shield and Absorb Elements both on reactions.

@@floofzykitty5072 well the main thing is that shield and absorb elements won't be available for a raging bladesinger, that being said they can still get absurdly high AC while they're raging and do some pretty fun hit and run tactics so it's still not terrible

@@Mitcheck315 I don’t think raging is a good idea unless forced. You lose significant damage because you can’t concentrate or cast spells while raging.

Tbh the issue with that multiclass is very much ability scores, you’re going to be spread very thin, and the fact that rage and spell casting don’t mix is pretty frustrating. If you have the strength available on a bladesinger build, I think 2 in paladin would be a much better build, because of all the crazy smite potential ontop of all the defensive features of the bladesinger Personally, I played a bladesinger with a 3 level start in armorer artificer, because I liked the idea of the special gauntlets and while it might not have been worth being 3 levels behind in terms of spell levels known, it was a very fun build and did allow me to redirect enemies from my allies to myself, and then with defensive spells and the super high AC it helped me waste enemy attacks pretty well. Plus, concentration proficiency + bladesong + mind sharpener invocation basically meant that I was never going to be forced to lose concentration on a spell basically ever.

A 1 level dip into wizard can really help the older sorcerer subclasses. It gives you 6 1st level spells and ritual casting when sorcerers are starved for known spells.

I think war magic is a solid pick if you take 2 levels of wizard. artificer 1 is solid too, gives you most of the same benefits as wizard keeps con saves, gives you ritual casting, fewer spells known as it 1+int mod, but able to be changed after each long rest, medium armor and shield proficiency, and artificer spell slot progression rounds up so you keep full spell caster spell slot progression

That’s a really interesting idea, but I don’t think I agree. With optional extended spell-list pretty widely accepted, I don’t think it’s worth the investment in your int. One of my main PC’s is a straight shadow sorcerer, and I’m already having a tough time trying to keep my cha, con and dex healthy. Maybe it’s because my groups uses point buy instead of rolling, but the dip needs to be really juicy for me to be tempted into spreading out my ASI’s more then I need to.

I've played a Divine Soul Sorc. Aasimar with two levels of Celestial Warlock and he was absolutely nasty. Eldritch blast with quickend spell to throw either Guiding Bolt or Fireball along with it was just awesome

@@fishraposo7192 oh its awesome, as a protector Aasimar you get to add your level in radiant damage as well with the eldritch invocation thats adds your cha mod to damage is just nasty. And to top it all off you are also a good healer

Same with a friend of mine a Divine Sorc Aasimar with two level of Fey Warlock. Heighten Hold Monster + Quickend Eldritch Blast are total unhealty for the boss.

I personally think I've found a good, yet very specific multiclass dip, which would be taking your first 2-3 levels in the Shadow Magic Sorcerer, then moving along with a Rogue. Especially if you play a race that doesn't start with darkvision, this gives you a few options for low level defensive spells, ways to augment and speed up your Sneak Attack as a rogue, and a slap in the Grim Reaper's face whenever you take a fatal hit.

unless there's a specific reason to take Sorcerer at lvl 1, wouldn't the extra proficiency from rouge at lvl be better?

Honestly I think the sorcerer is one of the best dips because with a one level dip you get a bunch of cantrips and you get access to subclass features (which include some really great spells and abilities). Not to mention access to a spell like shield.

agreed, especially divine soul. You get access to guidance, shield, healing word, guiding bolt, absorb elements, shield of faith, and favored by the gods is one of the best lvl 1 class abilities in 5e imo.

@@saveordeath2308 Yup if your Paladin is not going hexblade some Divine soul is always great. Also very good for other classes. That was my first character. Oath of Vengeance Pally with Divine Soul. True jack of all trades and nigh untouchable.

@@Casino220 Yeah just didn't want to go overboard with triple multiclass as was my first character ever and had already done an ASI in strength before I knew better. Just Divine Soul and Vengeance also works fine though.

sounds good but it worries me from a role-playing persepective, Sorcerer are supposed to be innate casters, how can you "gain" something that you're supposed to be born with? I guess the easiest fix is to start as lv1 Sorcerer and start leveling into the other class after that or to include some "repressed" backstory or some sort of event where the powers resurface/awaken but it could break some of the DM's pacing and storytelling.

I have had great success by taking a level of sorcerer (draconic bloodline) as a lore bard. AC increase, extra cantrips, and access to Shield.

Good to hear! I'm thinking of doing exactly that with a Glamour Bard, both for the armorless AC and cantrips. I just like the idea of playing a scantily-clad dancer with golden scales that enemies get distracted by in battle. Probably not quite the vibe your Lore Bard had though, haha.

I did Lore Bard with one level of hexblade and took eldritch adept feat for agonizing blast. Medium armor, eldritch blast, cha weapons, shield and a recharging level 1 slot for silvery barbs/shield. Planning on doing a second warlock level later (currently Bard 6/lock 1) for 3 more invocations like eldritch mind for concentration advantage, utility options like mask of many face or devils sight, or more control with repelling blast for example,, as well as a second SR spell slot so you can spam the 1st level reaction spells

I've actually done that with draconic bloodline/Valor Bard. Actually made the bard in question a little OP. I've also done Wild Magic Sorcerer dip with Valor Bard for using Tides of Chaos to gain advantage (or a flat roll when you're at disadvantage). Honestly Bards do benefit with a Sorcerer dip.

I highly recommend taking a single level dip in artificer for any full wizard build. Starting off with Constitution Saves, Med Armor, and Sheild proficiency is amazing. Additionally, you get access to the gudence cantrip and cure wounds spells, all the while not sacrificing spell slot progression!

You are, however, still delaying your SPELL progression. So you're getting upcasts by delaying your spells by a level. While not bad, it makes it a hard sell NOT to take a 2nd Artificer level to get infusions to augment your abilities even further.

To be honest cleric and artificer are probably the best dips you can do on most wizards. Which is better in which situations though seems highly debatable.

Dipping 1 level into Twilight Cleric and then going Gloomstalker Ranger works super well. You get the absurd Darkvision which means if your fighting at night you can be be sniping people from 300ft away with advantage as they won't be able to see you. Plus sharing the darkvision with the party means you won't be hindering your allies by being so dependent on the dark. Vigilant blessing helps you move earlier and get that dread ambusher out before enemies can react. The two just synergise so well with only a 1 level dip, you don't really need to go further as the chanel divinity doesn't really help much

My best friend, who loves making super optimized characters, made a gloomstalker/eldritch knight/twilight cleric/monk multiclass for an 18th level one shot. He used the darkness with gloomstalker invisibility and just cast darkness on himself (he had devil's sight from a feat). With his monk movement plus haste from eldritch knight, he could easily outspeed any melee and most ranged enemies. With sharpshooter and elven accuracy, he was able to singlehandedly kill a young golden dragon in the first round of combat. The darkness/devil's sight/elven accuracy/sharpshooter combo is ridiculously good.

@@nickm9102 Gloomstalker 3 makes Assassin a whole lot scarier, because suddenly surprising people is much easier than before. The level of twilight cleric on top is just stupidly good.

I like to dip into Monk when building a high Wis character, especially druids since their armor choices aren't optimal. As a Barbarian I've also tried dipping into War Wizard just to get a familiar and Arcane Deflection. I chose a bunch of out-of-combat low-level utility spells and one Ranged Attack cantrip for flying enemies. Really opened the character to pillars of play outside of battle while still increasing his battle prowess.

Sorcerer completely forgotten even though it's easily top 3 oof I do kinda feel like this didn't need to be a Top 5 as much as it would have been better to just go through each class and give a run down of how useful it is to multiclass into Still tho, good summary~

True on sorcerer and artificer, i think in the sorcerer's case it is more volatile in the same way warlock is, because you get a subclass feature at level one which vary greatly in usefulness. Metamagic and font of magic are still amazing though

Sorcerer is a good class to have as a main class with a paladin dip or to multiclass with warlock, but I don't see the benefit of just a dip in sorcerer especially now that metamagic adept feat exists.

My favorite multiclass dip was a 1 rogue -> 19 illusionist. Expertise goes a loooong way for a sneaky illusionist.

Obviously not a perfect option, but Variant Human can take Skilled at level 1 to snag an expertise without dipping rogue. Trades off a second expertise and light armor prof. to skip rogue, but the faster spell leveling is pretty important too.

Forge cleric is a great dip for other full casters - heavy armour and shield proficiency, +1AC, some healing and a lot of very scalable spells like bless. Most characters need half decent wisdom so it's not a dump stat.

Personally dipped it on my Eldritch Knight, dumping INT and is was amazing. EK are already tanky, but being able to buff, heal, and even smite was very good.

What's interesting is when you have multiclass options that synergize well with each other by virtue of shared attributes. 3 levels of Arti into Battlesmith or Armorer, paired with Bladesinger, is the same kind of output you get from Hexblade + Paladin, in that you can double down on INT for attack, damage, AC, CON conc. saves, etc.

Currently I'm playing an artificer armorer for the lightning launcher, but dipped into rogue. Lightning damage sneak attacks. Not optimal, but funny as hell

I will note one RAW problem of the multiclass is you are still limited to light armor to use bladesong, but this does help reduce the MAD of bladesinger a lot, shoutout to a guardian armorer bladesinger as the frail tank

@@iansinclair2028 the good news is any suit of armor (including light armor) can be used for the armor model. Throw in Enhanced Defense infusion and it should still perform well, especially if you main the Infiltrator model. Are there other drawbacks you can think of?

@@iLitTheSun infiltrator is a bit of an awkward duck with the song of victory feature, which i know is high lv play, but it does reduce dmg output by 10-15 per turn after extra attack and possible bonus attacks are considered, on the flipside of armorer primary, there isn't a lot lost in all from the 2 lv bladesinger dip aside from waiting for flash of genius and armor infusions a little longer

I love dipping rogue for Expertise. I've got a Kensei Monk with 3 levels of Swashbuckler Rogue. Emphasis on DEX, Stealth, & Acrobatics for extra maneuverability. Lots of fun with Fancy Footwork and Deflect Missles.

Monk with Rogue dip is a match made in heaven, specially Shadow Monk which has some rogue-ish mechanics and flavor.

Ehhh, rogue monk is ok, but you gotta be using a shortsword or some other finesse weapon because (although you can use dex with monk weapons) they dont count as finesse weapons for activating sneak attack. It can work, but monk is just too weak to make it worth most of the time

@@flyinhigh7681 ehh, only if you're unimaginative. Shadow monk can get advantage easily, and Shortswords are considered monk weapons, so if you're lv 11 or above you can get the martial arts die and do more damage than a normal shortsword plus the sneak attack dice and even if you are 10 or below, using a finesse weapon may deal less damage but it gets the sneak attack plus the extra unarmed strike. That's why I specified shadow monk, which is the most "roguish" of monks and can use Pass without trace instead of risking a fumble in stealth and shadowstep to BOTH gain advantage and to get within the 5ft required for the sneak attack AND still have a lot (if not all) of their movement left. The rogue dip is insane because if you start the encounter with the effects of Pwot you can sneak up on almost anyone more easily and you can use disengage or dodge as bonus action when in a tight spot. True, the monk may seem like a weak class to dip into rogue at first glance, but IMO makes sense both flavor-wise and gameplay-wise (although it's effectiveness depends on the campaing setting and enemies).

I like Echo Knight with Shadow Monk. Phantom Rogue with Long Death Monk. Kensai Monk with Scout Rogue, aka spell less Ranger. Kensai Monk on a Longbow or Spear Ranger is great.

Some dips give great benefits mechanically, some are great for in-character reasons (diversification of life experience, a character who "changed careers" early on, etc.); and there's a lot of overlap. My first character with a fighter dip was purely for backstory reasons (started out as a soldier before becoming disillusioned with...well, long backstory), but it turned out to give all sorts of tactical benefits. And there was even an in-character reasoning for some of the effects -- "yeah, I'm a bard now, but I still have the reserves of determination (i.e. action surge and second wind) I picked up in my earlier days."

I'll admit Artificer (minimum of 13 INT) is a bit unusual especially for a non-INT build, BUT don't overlook it! 1-2 levels gives you A LOT, 3 levels is a bit of an investment, but not unreasonable. 🔸1-level dip to get light & medium armor, shields, tinkers & thieves tools, couple cantrips & 1st level spells. 🔸2 levels you get a couple infusions, 🔸3 levels if you take Armorer subclass you get Heavy Armor, Smith Tools, & the Arcane Armor feature.

Great for a Wizard. Contemplating it on mine. A better AC without blowing Mage Armor every day, while learning an upcastable healing spell is nice. Plus more spells and tool abilities. 2 or 3 levels though would significantly set you back on your main wizard spell progression.

Even 1 level seems pretty good for any caster that normally doesn't get healing spells or decent armor, and it won't slow down your spell progression.

@@rhadiem yeah you would lose out on an ASI, 6th & a 7th spell slots for 3 levels. If you only took 2 in Artificer, you get your 6th lvl slot. Most pre-written modules run to level 12 or 13 so you would have to weigh in on how much you want your final ASI & your 7th lvl slot.

I took a 2 level Artificer dip for my Phantom Rogue in a recently ended campaign, gave her Firearm proficiency, infusions and some minor spellcasting, including Green Flame Blade, which is pretty good on rogues

FINALLY, someone talking about the Cleric dip! Some of those subclasses are really powerful and don't even need you to have Wisdom as your main stat.

The artificer is a good one to dip as well, especially for wizards. Similar to fighter, this dip you want to do at level 1 for medium armor and shield proficiency and the constitution saving throw procificiency. I really like the three levels of artificer into the artillerist dip because cannon is a great use of your bonus action and remain relevant through the entire game. You also get 4 infusion options and get to infuse two items as a level 3 artificer. Without a doubt, your party will appreciate a +1 shield, armor or weapon or a bag of holding or a pair of goggles of night. These things never lose relevance throughout a campaign. You also get some spell staples such as guidance, absorb elements, detect magic, cure wounds, feather fall, and the all powerful "shield" spell- which is nutty when you have infused +1 half plate and a shield for a base 20 AC. I think that the biggest issue with artillerist (and artificer in general) is that it doesn't scale well and doesn't have a great spell list at later levels. But dipping into artillerist and then taking wizard levels can add a lot of defensive and support utility to your character that a wizard doesn't normally get. And remember that using your cannon is not a spell, so you can now toss a fireball and then clean up the survivers with your cannon in the same turn.

Honestly one of my favorite things in terms of theory crafting builds is a 3 level dip to gain armorer and going the rest of the way evocation wizard. Heavy armor, negate the strength requirement, intelligence modifier for attacks, and the lovely fact that you can use elemental weapon on the infiltrator lightning launchers or guardian thunder gauntlets, means you can be somewhat tanky and viable in close, mid, or long range.

I took 2 levels in Artificer with my Gunslinger Fighter cause we're playing in an enviroment with very low resources and the Repeating Shot infusion works just perfectly with the lack of black powder around. Best choice ever!

The reverse is true as well. A single level dip into wizard gives an artificer a large expansion to low level utility spells to prepare. They can write some artificer spells into their spellbook which is great for not needing to prepare some ritual spells anymore. And of course, Shield.

Not to mention Steady Aim as your bonus action, which the advantage may be what you need to use your sneak attack, or to combine it with SS for even more accuracy, depending on if you have CBE and a hand crossbow or not. Elven Accuracy as an elf makes that even jucier.

The only build i can see this not being great for is the archery samurai, as that build loves sharpshooter and getting its extra attacks + rapid strikes ASAP, and fighting spirit eating your BA makes it hard to justify, with that said, i think it works reasonably well with other fighter subclasses like rune knight and battle master. Part of my assessment also comes from elven accuracy being great on samurai and fighters likely are likely taking an elf option that can teleport on BA without using spell slots.

Taking three levels in fighter for either champion or battle master would be incredible for any melee based class! Extra crits or superiority dice would be an amazing augmentation for a paladin or barbarian!

Haven't seen the full thing yet but I want to vouch for the Fathomless Warlock, two levels and it gets you a really good bonus action, Eldritch Blast and two invocations, good on just about anything that has a half decent bit of charisma

It does seem like a cool dip for someone without a need for their Bonus action. I do find it a little lame that its other level 1 feature is basically useless for a sea-dwelling race.

@@DominoPivot true, if you're playing a water based race there are three other warlocks thay give you a bonus action, the celestial gives you healing which would be good for bringing back downed allies, hexblade gives you more damage, and the undead allows you to try and scare an enemy once per turn

Fathomless is my favorite warlock whether we're talking about dipping or going "all the way." If you're playing a water breathing race talk with your DM and see is they're willing to let you swap out your non stacking traits for one or two skill proficiencies, or stack your swim speeds. If you take fathomless to 14 get your hands on a Decanter of Endless Water and the Mold Earth cantrip. Nothing beats the looks of bewilderment you get when you arrive at the dungeon and say "Hold on guys. I need to quick save." and then you make a pond by the entrance to the dungeon with a cantrip and a magic item most DMs think of as nothing more than fluff.

I've read through it, and even if the DM won't give me an excuse to use the waterbreathing and swim speed, the rest of the subclass features look really good. Even the teleport can be useful if you're creative and don't mind only getting 1/long rest.

As a cleric if you reach spirit guardians, get resilient for the proficiency on con saves, dip 2 levels of druid and get circle of the stars to wild shape and get at least 10 on the concentration saves. The minimum damage to drop your concentration is going to be like 30. I'm playing a twilight cleric, so I also have infinite temp hp and 20 AC, also that absorb elements, goodberry, even healing word so I can prepare something else in the cleric spell list. You can get pretty immortal with that while upcasting spirit guardians, casting spiritual weapon and than using free guiding bolts. Also at 6 lvl on twilight I can fly. Grab thorn whip(which is a spell attack, no save required, and the guiding bolt might give you advantage at that) fly to above an enemy pull him into the spirit guardians they take damage from the thorn whip, spirit guardians and the fall, than you fly down 5 ft so they start the turn on the spirit guardians. Speed halved so he cant run away And most of this comes back on short rests, except of course the spells On top of that, I say that my twilight cleric is about the stars and constelations so i dont even have to justify the dip, the starty form to transform into stars its the perfect fit for my character Never seen anyone talk about this, even though to me it just seems sooooo broken

Three of my favourite characters have a multi-class dip from 1-3. My Monk has a 1 Barbarian dip. Rage has been crazy on a Monk. I have often functioned as the group's DD and tank. By level 18 (17/1), I had around 310 HP with a Constitution of 22. Tons of HP+ high damage+ Evasion= Good time. My Swashbuckler took 2 levels of Tempest Cleric. He mainly uses Booming Blade and eventually obtained a Lightning damage weapon. I can now max out my entire damage roll if I want. At our current level, that's 3D8+5D6 (which I often save for a critical hit). I've also run a Scout Rogue+ Gloomstalker Ranger. Spells have been huge on a Rogue (I've saved us from a potential TPK twice by playing the "Hiding Healer"). Hiding in darkness, using better armour/weapons, marking things, extra proficiencies... It has been a good time.

The other thing I love about dipping into Cleric is it's super fun to add flavour wise. Almost any character can justify gaining a level in a Cleric Domain relating to their area (for example a Druid being so good at protecting Nature that they are gifted a level of Nature Cleric, or a Bard getting a level in Trickery Cleric)

I'm currently playing a wizard that dipped into wild magic sorcerer for one level. While I can't access meta magic, I have 4 extra cantrips, access to Tides of Chaos, and the wild magic element has COMPLETELY CHANGED OUR CAMPAIGN (we're using DM Coach's wild magic home-brew; it's awesome). It's a silly dip, but has added loads of flavour and so much fun to our game :)

You can take 3 levels of battle Smith or armorer articifer and then go bladesinger and now all your spells and melee attacks can use your int mod. This will greatly delay when you can get your 2nd attack, but you've got plenty of spells you can rely on in the mean time.

And you could grab both bladetrips while you are at it. And, oh yeah, you will still be able to cast them and Shield while dual wielding bc you’re carrying an infused weapon, even without War Caster. Or, with artillerist, you could have a protector turret giving you and your allies temp hp every turn. It’s pretty awesome.

Not quite. Battle Smith allows you to use INT on weapon attacks IF the weapon is magical (at higher levels and in most games not an issue but it's not guaranteed). Armorer only gets to use INT for the Armor's special weapon, not all melee or weapon attacks. Trust me, I'm playing a Samurai(3)/Artificer(8) and I wish I could use INT for all weapons... my DM gave me a +3 (plot reasons) greatsword and I never used it because I couldn't use INT for it.

@@HughRGlen For the battle Smith all you have to do is take the enhance weapon infusion and you won't have to worry if you dm hands out magic items or not. As for the armorer yeah you only can use int for the armors special weapons, but you still have that option.

@@azrik6084 it is also worth noting at 9th lv armorer artificer, you can start to employ enhanced weapon on your armorer weapons as per the armor modifications feature which helps out a lot, but is not that same as wielding that handed out +3 greatsword or at lv 14 artificer, something like the holy avenger with your int mod

@@iansinclair2028 I just mentioned the enhanced weapon infusion because another person pointed out that the battle Smith only gets to use their int for their weapon attacks if they are wielding a magic weapon and they said your at the mercy of you dm to get a magic weapon. I wouldn't take more than 3 levels of articifer for a build like this. The only reason I brought it up was to show you can use your int for a blade singer build by taking a 3 level dip into articifer.

got a backup char that has 2 dips that will become full multiclass. we are lvl 7 atm, so he is 4 lvl's oathbreaker paladin, 1 lvl in Shadow Sorc and 2 lvl's in Undead Warlock. ofc he also got a story as to why he have those classes, as i like to not only make it work but also have a reason of why to have those classes.

Honorable mention: 2 level Divination Wizard dip. Beside Portent obviously, even as an other spell caster you can cast any 1st wizard ritual spell (and there are a ton) you know without having to memorise it...and you can add new spells to your spellbook from scrolls. If there's no wizard in the party, this dip can be awesome.

I have an IRL group that I'm currently running through LMoP who are currently going through Wave Echo Cave, and am going to be transitioning them to ToD(both with heavy homebrew), and I restricted multi-classing for the first campaign because pretty much all of them are new to d&d, but once we get into Hoard of the Dragon Queen imma give them the option to multiclass. I've been having a blast with Rogue 3/Cleric 8 in a campaign I'm playing in. Always having access to disengage or dash on a caster is AMAZING. The sub-classes in question are Mastermind and Knowledge Domain. I also got to have a blast with pairing 3 levels of Gloomstalker with 5 levels of Barbarian in a one shot. Running around as an invisible Barbarian is a terrifying concept.

I personally love grabbing a couple of levels of tempest cleric with a storm sorcerer. It can allow you to be a very tanky and mobile caster with the capability to really nuke with the channel divinity and chain lightning at high levels and with the metamagic to change damage types of spells you can do a lot of damage.

One of my favorite multiclass builds is to take 5 levels of battlemaster fighter (for multi-attack) and then take rogue levels to eventually become a swashbuckler. You're going to be a dex based melee fighter and for manuevers you want brace and riposte. The way sneak attack is worded, you only get sneak attack once per turn (not once per round). So by taking reaction attacks, you do get sneak attack on those as long as they are triggered on someone else's turn. Brace let's you take an attack if anyone steps into your range and riposte lets you take an attack if anyone misses an attack against you. If you really want to dial this up to 11, be a bugbear also get the sentinel feat. Your long limbed racial trait plus the brace manuever will work just like a polearm master build does with sentinel. Additionally, your high initiative bonuses will allow you to go first allowing you to utilize the bugbear's "suprise attack" racial bonus to deal an additional 2D6 on your first hit.

Also two other favored dips of mine are war magic wizard particularly on the eldritch knight and the armorer as they need all the spell slots the can get. The other favorite is monk 1 on almost any druid as it's form of unarmored AC tends to be better than any standard armor druid can wear and reqs almost no focus into dexterity at all

A 2 level dip in Moon Druid can be really good especially with the less Tanky builds. Monks in general benefit from Wildshape and a Wizard with the added health pool plus armor and shield proficiency is great (especially on an abjuration Wizard)

I can see the appeal of a Wizard that casts a concentration spell and then Wild Shapes for higher constitution, but at that point I'd just play a full-on Land Druid instead, because delaying your spells by two levels must suck. Moon dip for a Monk or Barbarian could be fun though :)

In my current campaign, I've dipped my Evocation Wizard into 2 levels of Fighter; lets me equip the acid/poison resist Chain Shirt our group found without hindering my spells, and of course, *ACTION SURGE FIREBALLS.* Plus just that little extra couple of HP from Fighter. Though my first use of Action Surge actually ended up being a Lightning Bolt instead of a Fireball... because the enemy we were fighting had a surprise Fire Immunity that I found the hard way.

I think people underrate a 1 level dip into Divine Soul Sorcerer. Access to sorcerer & clerics spells give you the best selection of arcane & divine spells. - 4 cantrips is crazy utility for any class. Guidance is a must have, the other 3 are based on your playstyle. - 2 spell slots of 1st level & 2 spells known. Guiding Bolt, Healing Word, Shield of Faith, Shield, Absorb Elements, Magic Missile are all great options. - Bonus spell known via Divine Magic/Affinity. I usually choose Bless (Law) or Cure Wounds (Good) but again depends on your playstyle. - 'Favored by the Gods' is one of the best lvl 1 abilities in 5e imo. I almost exclusively use this for saving throws but you add 2d4 AFTER you found out you failed to change the outcome. Use this to hold concentration, save vs hold person/mind control, use it on a death save as well since you don't have to be conscious to use it. Recovers on short or long rest so you can use it multiple times a day. This dip is amazing for warlocks for the extra slots, as well as paladins, bards, or any other any class that wants healing, shield/absorb elements spell, and wants a bonus vs failed saves.

A single level dip is essential just base Sorcerer with free mage armor and its only +1 AC better than studded leather which your bard can already use. Obviously Hexblade warlock is a great dip but it is overused for CHA characters.

@@saveordeath2308 The main appeal of Draconic Sorc to me was armorless AC; I can imagine a dancer or an acrobat fighting in an appealing costume instead of armor. But you're right that it's a bit expensive of a dip for just that.

I’m doing roughly the same to replace a level 9 character that just died. Level 1 Divine Soul sorcerer for Con saves, shield and absorb elements. Then 8 levels of Undead warlock. Half drow, too - so far more magic than warlock alone. Even more by taking shadow touched and fey touched

@@Hyde_Hill Yeah it has its downsides but for melee Martial classes its very helpful to have advantage especially if you are going the STR route and use heavy armor due to low DEX. Also works nicely with Heavy weapons master. Rage is a potential downside but you only have 2 rages anyways for 2 level dip. Its not the reason for the dip. Always fun to try and get those sweet crits. Try it with the elven accuracy feat for even more crit rolling fun!

Monks can be paired super well with a lot of classes. At first level you already get an AC boost, extra weapons, ability to use Dex instead of Str, and a bonus action attack. Second gives you more movement as well as even more things to do with your bonus action. And third gives you deflect missiles along with subclass features. Clerics, Druids, Rangers, Rogues get the most out of it, but an AC boost, extra move, and bonus action dodge is useful no matter what

So glad that y'all mentioned action surge and casting, especially with yall being a decently high viewed channel. Maybe this will help to educate people on the made up rule of "only 2 spells per turn", which is especially frustrating since it's *never* been a rule and instead is just people misquoting the actual rule with bonus action spells.

One level in divine soul sorcerer is pretty good as anything charisma related. As you can pick between 4 cantrips that are either from the Sorcerer or Cleric spell list, 2 spells that are also either sorcerer or cleric + 1 spell that is based on the alignment from the sub class itself, plus the feature "favored by the gods" which gives you 2d4 to any saving throw or attack roll you failed once per short rest. The short rest part makes it really powerful. It is great on warlocks as it gives them 2 first level spell slots to use their low level spells still, but also great on paladins and bards as it gives them access to the spells shield and absorb elements

I have enjoyed several wis based rangers with cleric dips, although the stat reqs for ranger usually make it tough to use heavy armor, but war, nature, and arcana really make those builds hum with extra attacks, a dif fighting style from the ranger and making magical ranged attacks easier to come by. It also allows some of the summon spells to work really well, shoutouts to the fey wanderer and the revised beast master ranger who enjoy these options a lot because of the high wisdom focus

I scrolled till the page had to load additional comments and was really sad to see not a single suggestion for Ranger. Ranger with the Deft explorer option from Tasha's is amazing. 1 skill, med armor, martial weapon, and shield from base ranger. 1 language from Favored enemy, 2 more languages and expertise from deft explorer. All for 1 level. Helps fill in all the gaps in your caster's resume.

It was expensive in terms of spell progression but my all time favorite multiclass was 3 Rogue into illusionist wizard. The Arcane Trickster mage hand always gave me a on-brand ie: sneaky option for my bonus action and the expertise made him amazing at what he did best.

One great choice for spellcasters is a 2 level dip into tempest cleric, whose channel divinity allows you to maximize the damage on a lightning spell, most notably Witch Bolt, which not only can be twinned, but also has the some of the best damage scaling in the game.

Love a dip into tempest, if you give them metamagic adept or dip into sorcerer you can change the damage of any spell you use to thunder or lightning, use this with something like inflict wound and your character has an in-built nuke

@@LaneyStudios5 Oh yes, the metamagic option to change the damage of a spell is also a boon for Draconic Sorcerers, and is definitely a great call here. I have a level 8 Draconic Sorcerer (Black) in one our games, and I took the Metamagic Adept feat to give me more metamagic options and sorcery points. Now it's fun to turn every spell into an acid spell (each one sounding more hideous than the last)!

1 level of Artificer for a Wizard lets him heal, doesn't cost spell slot progression, gains him light and medium armor, and more access to spells including level 1 healing which can be upcast all the way up.

One that really worked for me is a 2 level dip in Monk for the Ranger - particularly with Tasha's additional "Dedicated Weapon" option If you want to be a martial ranger and lean into DEX and WIS, you get a lot out of weapons, AC, and magic without wearing armor

My current campaign my party is at level 8 and I’m playing a battlesmith artificer (6) and a dip into bladesinger wizard (2). The synergy between the two has been *chef’s kiss*. The extra bonus for concentrating on spells, bonus to AC and combined with infusions like Mind Sharpener the only real downside is my bonus action at the beginning of an encounter is in higher demand.

Bit more specific, but the Sorcerer/Warlock dips are very compatible. As a Sorcerer, two levels into Warlock gives you a consistent, high versatility, good damage cantrip and invocation options. Bonus points if you do it as a Hexblade or Great Old One 'lock. As a Warlock, a one or two level dip into Draconic Sorcerer gives you permanent Mage Armour, Con saving throw proficiencies, more magic in the early levels, and possibly some Metamagic. Really solid combo.

3 levels of Battle Master Fighter + sharpshooter feat made my Battlesmith Artificer an unstoppable force. Those 3 lvls + feat means I can always dish out some of the best single target damage in the group, while saving all of my spells/infusions for utility and heals. Also, Battlesmith lets me use my Intel mod for my bow attacks... so I get to pump all my points into my main stat and still be good at martial combat. So I have a lights out sniper who can also heal/buff, but also serve as rogue when necessary (lockpick prof + Gloves of Thievery Infusion). All that, and you also get a freaking robot knight to command who can block for you or save allies...

That sounds great, but Artificer is your main class, right? I wouldn't consider three levels of a secondary class to be a dip but a major investment. Even two levels is stretching the term or so it seems to me. Three levels can be the duration of an entire short campaign.

There's 2 fighting styles that fighter doesn't have access to: blessed warrior and druidic warrior only available to paladin and ranger

Honestly I let players pick any fighting style they want if they have a class that gives fighting styles. If they want to play a blind ranger or an unarmed paladin for thematic reasons I cheer them on. There's no reason to deny fighter the cantrip styles or deny paladin and ranger the 5 or so styles fighter gets that they don't. Especially when anyone can take any style with a feat.

I took 1 level of wizard on my Druid. 4 rituals permanently available without eating up my Druid spell preparations, plus magic missile and disguise self. Also 3 cantrips: minor illusion, mage hand, message. None needs intelligence to be higher than requisite 13, and all spells the Druid cannot usually access. Really strong utility/support additions for just 1 level dip.

Great Video! Would love to see a follow up style video with "our top X favorite 10th level multiclass builds". If you had to make a 10th level character that was multi-classed - what would it be/how would it be constructed. (Could do same at level 7 and level 13).

Good list. As a proud optimizer, multiclass dips are a bread and butter of my builds. i'll share my own top 5 dips: 1. hexblade 1-3 2. fighter 1-2. rune knight or battlemaster are the best subclass picks if you want to take 3 levels. 3. sorc 1-3 (this i think was the big miss from your vid as metamagic helps any spellcaster and quicken spell enables so many combos). i'd point out divine and wild as the best dips among sorcs. 4. cleric 1-2 with twilight, peace, tempest and grave being the best dips. 5. fathomless 1-3 which is a great way to access a consistent useful bonus action for cha based classes that can also be used for speed reduction combos.

I always think the Moon Druid is criminally overlooked as a multiclass dip. So many classes seriously benefit from a bonus action wild shape. Rogue sneaking around? Become a spider for a bit and sneak attack off the ceiling. Raging barbarian need (even) more HP in a pinch? Wildshape into a bear. Add some clutch healing, great cantrips like guidance/mending/shape water, and some reasonable debuffs/utility spells, and you become able to handle almost any situation. I get the challenge of MAD and narrative justification, but the abilities are pretty sweet.

Rogues are my favorite class, and I’ve had the most fun pairing them with Warlocks personally. My favorite combinations are that of an Arcane Trickster who later takes Pact of the Chain to easily equip an Owl familiar that can aid you with consistent sneak attack, plus you gain access to a decent amount of spells from the warlock list that are often really helpful in boosting Rogue abilities. Besides that there is also the “HexBuckler” who quickly turns into a melee damage dealing BEAST with access to insane movement options and again very useful spells :)

Sorcerer is actually one of the strongest 1 level dips for self-protection. You get Shield, Silvery Barbs/Absorb Elements, and your Sorcerer subclass. Many of the best Sorcerer subclasses give you limited use reactions at level 1 which affect dice rolls. You can take your pick between removing advantage and disadvantage PB times per long rest, adding a bonus to your own saving throws (or attack rolls if you're nasty) once per short rest, or giving yourself advantage on a saving throw (or attack/ability check) a DM's number of times per long rest (minimum of 1). Divine Soul also lets you pick up Bless on top of this, and mix and match any other Cleric spell that you want more than Absorb Elements if SB isn't available in your group. No character doesn't want this package of protective abilities. Even a Barbarian can still use the subclass features while raging.

One of my all time favorite characters was one I made based off the Green Arrow. 3 levels Assassin Rogue/7 levels Battle Master Fighter. Specialized in Archery, obviously. Auto crit against surprised creatures with Superiority Dice, then an extra attack + Action Surge, plus getting the Disengage/Dash/Hide Bonus Action. Using a Longbow to hit from across the battlefield then hiding as a bonus action to a +11 stealth if you’ve used your background to gain a stealth proficiency and then used the expertise skill to turn it into expertise.

A 2 level dip into *Divination Wizard* if you can justify the minimum Intelligence stat (13) is great on any character just for the protection from _the dice gods._ Portent is basically luck rolls that you can preplan, saving that high or low roll for the right moment. And if you add in the Second Chance Feat and are a Halfling, and then in addition to Halfling luck take Bountiful Luck, ... the DM may throw dice at your head.

This is why i love the tempest cleric with a fighter 2 dip so much. Most casters will expend their 2 3rd level slots in that one action surge, but not the tempest cleric and his trusty maxed call lightning. Just cast spiritual weapon 2 or call lightning 3 the previous turn then bring down 70 damage out of nowhere... at lv 7. Cast maxed Call lightning - action surge another maxed lightning bolt - bonus action strike with your existing spiritual weapon 30 + 30 + 1d8 + modifier

Go Fighter 3, grab Eldritch Knight: Booming Blade, one utility cantrip, Shield, Absorb Elements and Find Familiar. Oh, and you don't lose that much of spell slots this way.

@@MadnessOpus Sounds interesting but being 3 levels behind in cleric is a big hit in spell progression. Plus call lightning already lasts 100 turns, so spell slots arent really a concern. But the booming blade is tempting. Ill need to think about this.😁

3 levels of bard on a shield master build paladin. Expertise on athletics, made him +17 to knock guys prone, and lore bard cutting words just to make sure. Oh the extra spell slots for smiting was nice too.

Taking the first level in Artificer and the rest in Wizard is pretty fun. D8 dice maxed, Medium Armor, INT and CON save instead of INT and WIS. Also you get Cure Wounds, Faerie Fire, and the entire Artificer Spell list available as scrolls (with an Arcana check) moving forward.

I’m currently playing in a level 12 campaign, and I’m playing a (6 soul knife rogue, 6 bladesinging wizard) halfling. And he is a blast to play! Especially with magic items boosting his charisma score to match his dex and intelligence

I made an open hand monk with 1 lvl light domain cleric. I know Monks need their keypoints but one lvl in created an extra disadvantage option with it costing ki, an extra buff through bless, etc.

That literally just gives magical tinkering which is basically a permanent utility cantrips, it will give a few great proficiencies which could be good but there are other ways without a lvl dip to get those for a wizard.

My first character is a Spores Druid with a Trickery Cleric multiclass dip - a deep gnome shroom-peddling drug dealer praying to Waukeen for a good hustle. It's been a little clunky with all the class features requiring actions to activate, though I'm chalking that down to inexperience. We're currently lv 12, and I've found my niche as utility-support - Disguise Self, Blessing of the Trickster, Gaseous Form and Wild Shape make exploration a breeze, while Halo of Spores and its related nastiness helps the party wear down enemies in combat. Big shout-out to my DM for waiving concentration on Invoke Duplicity, as it's allowed me to be so much more creative with it!

I think Hexblade is definitely the standout Warlock multiclass (especially for paladins or bards) but really a LOT of the Warlock subclasses offer some useful first level abilities. Fiend warlocks get free temp HP anytime you kill an enemy, Great Old Ones get short range telepathy, Celestials get a free bit of healing (as a bonus action), Genie’s get a free mobile shelter/hiding place. Any of which can be pretty useful to almost any character/campaign. And my personal favorite underdog, the Fathomless basically get Spiritual Weapon, without a spell slot. Which is just an EXCELLENT option to regularly utilize an open bonus action (who doesn’t want to make an additional attack each round?) and, though a bit clunky to pair with hex, is very potent in a big boss fight where you have a couple rounds to get them both running at the same time.

I think a 2/3-level dip in warlock is super powerful as a default, 2 invocations that drastically change your character, potentially 2nd level spells that come back on short rests. even with 13 charisma most of the spells that warlocks can take will be effective as they don't need saves or attacks to be made. Examples: devils sight and the darkness spell make you very effective in combat and sneaking around in the dark, hex for extra damage, mask of many faces for infiltration, Eldritch mind for concentration, Eyes of the rune keeper for lore. Then if you take pacts into account you can get some potent combos going on. Wizards get a better pact familiars, barbarians can never be unarmed with pact of the blade, and sorcerers get a lot more spells with pact of the tome. Lots of potential going on

A College of Valor bard gains really good benefits by dipping into 2 levels of fighter. With Second Wind they gain a self-healing option that's not a spell and with Action Surge they can take the Attack action and cast a spell with a casting time of 1 action, and then use Bardic Inspiration to inspire their allies.

I've found that a 2 level dip into bard is pretty good - you can get some healing spells to keep people from making death saves, you get a few uses of your inspiration, and you get jack of all trades at level 2
