We can't believe it- our tricolor hognoses had eggs! Kudos to Abby for noticing them, as we never would've guessed she laid with how buried the eggs were! We've never bred tricolors before so we're ecstatic!

The number and variety of eggs this year shows how happy and comfortable your snakes are. The zoo is clearly a huge success from a husbandry angle. Keep it up!

Happy and comfortable or not they are gonna lay either way lmao
@nearlynight
@nearlynight 2 года назад
@@Rryan8065 this isnt entirely true. a stressed snake is more likely to lay slugs as well as become eggbound, and if theyre not taken care of they are not nearly this handleable with humans, let alone other snakes. i have issues with some things theyve done management-wise, but in terms of animal happiness they are doing well.

@@nearlynight do u mind me asking what the management issues are?
@nearlynight
@nearlynight 2 года назад
@@daisybee1599 not seeming all that prepared for specific species' eggs is one of them- they didnt expect them to breed, but they did pair them for breeding, so it's their responsibility to do the research in the event something may happen. not to mention an incident where a very basic, common knowledge thing was mistaken that ended up killing an entire clutch of eggs because their employees werent fully trained on how to handle things- they need to remember that on the daily they are responsible for hundreds of lives, and try to avoid "surprises" as much as possible. i dont hate them, and i dont think theyre bad people! its just very clear that they arent very experienced with running a large-scale business like this. im sure as things continue these growing pains will lessen, but right now theyve made a few mistakes thatve made me wary! note: the incident happened while they were out of town, a clutch of eggs was put at a very wrong temp which caused the entire clutch to go bad. in this scenario, it lies on the management to have better trained their staff, not the staff who didnt know any better.

They mentioned in a recent video that more eggs than normal were rotting during the incubation process, and it's likely because air can't circulate like it should. I understand that setting up another incubator would take some effort, but it seems like it would be worth it to ensure that everything is in optimal conditions.
@jax422
@jax422 2 года назад
Unless they have the AC in that room cranked, heat circulation wouldn’t be an issue. The incubator only has to be between 78°F and 84°F which isn’t too much warmer that room temperature. It’s not like it needs to be 120°F. In the wild, the eggs are exposed to varying temperatures from day to night.

You guys should get Ring-Necked rat snakes! (not a-lot of info about them but its there!) (habitats!) Ring-neck snakes can be found in virtually any habitat but seem to prefer wooded areas. In the Piedmont and Coastal Plain ring-necks are particularly common in moist areas including river floodplains, moist hardwood forests, and wetland edges. (egg info) A female ringneck can lay between 2 to 10 oval eggs that are about the size of a penny during the months of June or July. Multiple females have been found laying their eggs together under an ideal log. Like most reptiles, the young are born completely independent and don't need any parental care. (life info) Ringneck snake care begins with a proper cage. That means a 10-gallon cage with a mesh top that will stop the snake from escaping. These snakes require plenty of hiding places, so things like hollowed logs and caves are necessary to prevent the snake from feeling stressed. (size and description) Ringneck snakes are small -- 10 - 15 in (25 - 38 cm) -- slender snakes that are generally grayish with a yellow or orange band around the back of the neck and a yellow or orange underside. (their rarity type) Ringneck snakes are secretive reptiles. Largely due to their small size and nocturnal nature, they are rarely seen and presumed to be uncommon. However, one study conducted in Kansas suggests that they exist at densities greater than 700 - 1800 per hectare (what they eat) The diet of the ring-necked snake consists primarily of smaller salamanders, earthworms, and slugs, but they also sometimes eat lizards, frogs, and some juvenile snakes of other species. The frequency at which prey species are chosen is dependent on their availability within the habitat.

Good afternoon Emily & Ed! I think the theme of the eggs is social media. You guys really got me in to reptiles and mantids at only 6yo. Now I have a boa constrictor of my own at only 8yo. Her name is Mango. She is a Sharp/Strain Albino BCI. She is about 7 months old. And I was thinking about getting a bearded dragon and/or a fat tailed gecko or a hognose. So I am doing a lot of research on Google, Reptile sites and stores online, Your channel, and many other channels.😊 And I think I might start (Maybe just maybe🙄🙏) ( If my mom even LETS ME!😡) breeding some fat tails or maybe some hogs but not right now, I think I will maybe breed some reptiles in 2-4 years from now. I hope you guys have a great summer!

Do they lay so many clutches in a year because they’re such short lived species compared to other snakes? So cool, congrats to you guys!

It's a paradox question for this species - do they lay so many clutches because they are short-lived, or are they short-lived because they lay so many clutches? I would think it began as the second, and evolutionarily developed into the first.
