My name is David and with my dog Lefty we travel the country in our ambulance conversion RV. I made this change to my life and you can too! Like, subscribe and comment! Lefty would appreciate it - he wants the adventures to keep coming!
The Campulance is a 2002 Ford E450 Marque Commando 164 Class III ambulance powered by the Ford 7.3l Powerstroke turbo diesel engine and a 4 speed 4R100 transmission. Lefty is a 68lb American Staffordshire Terrier (best I can tell) that came from the Verona Street Animal Shelter (www.vsas.org/) in March 2014 at the age of 9 months. We have been living full time in the campulance since July 2019. #ambulancelife #vanlife #staffordshireterrier

I used to be a Certified Pilot Escort Vehicle Operator and we call those pieces of tire tread "Gators"... So if I'm in the lead vehicle and I come across one I radio to the Oversize Load driver that there is a gator up ahead and I point out it's location on the highway. Like "on the fog line" or middle of the #4 lane or what ever. Gators have been known to take out windshields. You can lose your drive shaft if it gets under your vehicle so never just run over one if you can avoid it. They've killed a few motorcyclists. You're lucky it happened next to you and not in front of you.

So glad to see Lefty out in the nature again! I gotta say, getting killed by debris on the interstate is one of my personal biggest fears. Blown tires, random crap falling off trucks, idiots throwing stuff off bridges, construction debris, et. Scary scary stuff. Stay safe! Have fun and give a big pat to Lefty from me. ❤️‍🔥

A few years ago, I was driving my Tundra when passing an 18-wheeler on I-15 just south of Salt Lake when the 18-wheeler blew a tire right next to me. The tire literally exploded, no warning signs. The force of the exploding tire pushed my Tundra to the left into the fast lane and was so loud that my and my wife's ears were ringing. At first, I thought my truck had blown up. It was not until I saw the 18-wheeler swerving all over the road and tire debris flying all over the place that I realized what had happened. I am shocked that the force of the explosion did not blow out the front passenger window. I was also lucky that there were no cars beside me in the fast lane as there was nothing I could have done to prevent the sudden lane change. I am glad that I was not in a smaller vehicle or on a motorcycle. To this day, I get nervous when passing big trucks. Glad you are well and nothing bad happened.

November 1982, traveling across the country from the east coast to Las Vegas on Rt.40, I will never forget the sight of the spare tire bouncing out of it's rack under a 18 wheel flatbed. The only thing holding it was a chain. When I saw that, I instantly let off the gas and started to slow down, and immediately the chain broke. That tire did three bounces in front of me as it worked itself over to a ravine to my right. If the tire had landed flat, there would have been no way to avoid it. I don't believe my little van or my parents and I would have survived. God was with us that day. I can relate to your close call, David. BTW, that truckdriver never even realized he lost his tire. Kept on down the highway. PS : I'm 73 now, and planning to drive a different van back to Baltimore to see family again before I get too old. LOL

When David begins his stories, there’s this lowering of the volume, and the tone of his voice. I can’t tell whether he’s going to start a story beginning with, “ it was just after midnight and nobody was on the road when suddenly, truck blew its tire and we ended up on the side of the interstate. I looked to my right and I was at the entrance of the large cemetery.!!!” You can imagine that this story it’s gonna scare the Beeba out of you. The other possible avenue of the story could be, “We suddenly broke down. At that time, the sun was 98° under the trees. Left & I looked at each other and we knew that the end was near!!” Either narrative is going to leave me, shivering and waiting with bated breath for each next leg of the story… David is a wonderful storyteller

Hi Campulance Man and Lefty, I imagine you've heard the stories about semi-truck tires and their danger they have at times. That area actually has a nice, rugged beauty to it. I especially liked when Lefty was doing his imitation of Rin Tin Tin on the rock outcropping by striking a noble pose. Here's hoping your problems will be few, except maybe when Lefty runs into a jackalope with an attitude.

I think he was distracted or something and people in the opposite lane all slowed down and I had to pass that semi onto oncoming traffic but they knew what I was doing! Then all of a sudden that trucker swerved in the correct lane. I was shaking for about 45 minutes afterwards. But I do believe I did the right thing. I didn’t want to startle him so I did what I had to do. It was truly a close call!!

I would suggest you start monitoring your EGT's (Exhaust Gas Temps) when climbing those big hills, if you are not. You can overheat your valves and not have the engine temp climb. It is a common factor on diesel engines and leads to valve stem failure often called "dropping a valve"

So fun watching him gallop up those steep rocks. Just like a younger dog would do! He is in his element, for sure. I hope you come across some streams and maybe tiny waterfalls, since he loves the water so much. And I am frightened of driving near semi’s. I see so many of them out on the road and they are swerving, and crossing the middle lane, or going over onto the shoulder. I never know why? If they’re falling asleep? It’s just plain scary! This happened to me between Tacoma and Olympia, WA. the tread flew up against my hood and over the windshield. Scared the CRAP out of me, in a smaller 4-door car. When I got home I said, Hey kids come outside and see the semi tread on my car hood! Another time between Cheyenne and Fort Collins, a work truck, maybe a short flat-bed was in the center lane, I don't know if it lost something or ran over it. Large metal looked like the size of a truck door panel flew up and under my front passenger tire, was gone in a split second. I could have been decapitated if it came through my windshield!

We are at the Mt Princeton RVP campground on the other side of the BLM camping area from you. One of my Maintenance men stayed up at Turtle Rock CG preseason. We are in town because we run 13 of the local USFS campgrounds in the Salida/BV district. We have 8 sets of camp hosts & several of our campgrounds are smaller unheated campgrounds varying from 6,000 to 11,500', some of not so bad roads, others on high clearance 4x4 roads that take me a couple of hours to go up to in order to clean the toilets, fire pits, etc. We used to camp host ourselves, but the evil of getting good at your job results in getting volunteered for more work, lol. We are out here until Oct 20 & then we scoot to IL after buttoning up the campgrounds for the winter before heading to FL for the winter to hold my father-in-law's celebration of life. The life of RV travel is a lot of work at times, but on the time we do get off we like to visit campgrounds like Turtle Rock as it reminds us of the fun we do like to have from time to time, lol. Cheers, Davey & Sheila

We are across the railroad tracks 1/4 mile from HWY -24 just behind Snowy Peaks RVP. Since we work 12-hour days we come & go like a crazy person, not having a shop, my tailgate is my shop, lol.

Hey Dave, thank God, you, and Lefty are safe, and sound. You are extremely lucky that the tire tread did not impact the side of your rig. That's normally not the case, as usually when a tire tread peels off, and flies, it takes out any and everything in it's path. So, I did a thing last Thursday. I finally made a down payment on the 89 Ford E350 Ambulance I've been telling you about.

@@TheCampulanceMan thank you. The price for the rig was $2,000, I made a $1400 down payment, and owe another $600. The guy explained to me why it's been sitting. Apparently, the mechanic was in the process of bleeding air out of the fuel system, when he somehow poked a huge hole in the fuel filter, but never said anything, and just up and left, and never came back.

@@TheCampulanceMan I don't think it will take much at all to bring it back to life. A good set of batteries, 10 gallons of clean Diesel fuel with an injector cleaner additive, a new fuel filter of course, and maybe a shot of starting fluid in the air breather, and she should roar back to life with a bit of coaxing. The real test will be to see if she will move under her own power, and stop when I step on the brake pedal.

Get some Standyne cleaner and dump 2 bottles into the 10 gallons - that helped my rig when i first got it. @@kevinswinyer3176

Thanks Mark. I appreciate your comments. As far as I know, the Temu app is secure, but I'd be diligent on buying from there only because some of the vendors sell lower quality items.

I know what you mean. We just came home from two weeks out and on one of the last turns before home, we heard a BOOM! Thought sure a tire popped…but all 6 were ok! So now, what made that noise? Must get the creeper out and inspect the springs and sway bar. Can’t for the life of me figure out what made that noise. Wife couldn’t find anything inside that fell or anything. Bugs the crap outta me!

David you need to relax about the truck. They're just heavy and that diesel will take whatever you throw at it. Always check the inner tire as well when the outer looks low.

Man, you got lucky on that tire explosion many years back I had the windows down and A rear tire exploded on the driver side of the truck, thankfully but the noise was so bad. I thought I was hitting the head with a baseball bat. They only put good tires on the steering tires front better tires on the rear of the tractor and regrooved or rewrapped on the rears. You’ve ever go down the interstate and hear them Making that bumping sound or a thud that means Their recap. When they shred, it will destroy the side of your car in the underneath. The radials in them looks like your car was keyed hundred time over. Period that’s why I stay away from the rear wheels and at least get up towards the cab but still in his view and pass them as soon as possible or let them get in front of me as soon as possible so I can get some distance alligators on the interstate they’ll You Chew you up. I noticed you don’t have a link to the stuff that you use in your rig. I was trying to find a link for that latest radio but I guess I’ll Google it. Have a good one guys.
