Congrats. I've been a bit confused as to what stage you are at because I binge watched your 150+ videos and got muddled. Glad you've gotten this far and you've inspired me to tackle some of these projects when I get my property.

Just a suggestion. Be sure to put some kind of screen or filter on the end of the overflow valve you mentioned as that should be your pressure release valve in both directions. As water goes in it will allow air to escape and as water is removed it will allow air to enter or you will have a vacuum.

This is the main reason I watch you guys, your a true team and you will be a stronger couple for working together so closely like this. Its hard these days to find a true partner in life so many people never find that person, you two are very lucky to have the relationship you do, hell most couples cant deal with monthly bills let alone building their own home/homestead.

You guys are a reflection of this quote I think. "Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not: nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. In a perfect world each system should be attacked methodically and sequentially to completion. Coordination can be a big part of it. Hard to do when we start ea project off knowing nothing. End result, many of these "suggestions" come too late. In some cases the kids may get ahead of themselves in one project before they can properly synchronize transitioning between other trades. Have to give these two credit for their stick-to-it-iveness. They are lucky they are both smart enough and forgiving enough to work thru each roadblock they encounter with incredible grace and character. Building is truly an art. One home owner/builder told me he felt like he didn't get a handle on designing and then building his ideal home until he'd completed his fifth house. I don't believe we can fully appreciate just how hard it is until we try doing it ourselves. I was a supplier of construction products and I still marvel at the ability and patience some builders show with their customers and spouses.

Not really sure but shouldn't pipe "dope" be used instead of Teflon tape in this situation (the piping not the poly)? Only asking. Not meant to be smarmy or anything.
@chopfather2730
@chopfather2730 7 лет назад
use only Teflon on plastic.using pipe dope will cause over tightening.and distort the fitting.because of the lubercation.
@viscash3606
@viscash3606 7 лет назад
Teflon should be fine. From what you see on the vid, I just don't think there is enough of it. You have to wrap the threads until the peaks and valleys almost disappear, 15-20 or more layers and a good coating of spray Gal paint on the bare steel threads that remain visible. Full tanks will test it.

I would add a couple 1 to 1 1/2 inch electrical conduits to that trench before back filling. An electronic fill level indicator lights valve automation phone who knows what can be added easily later with just a few bucks now. make sure and use sweeps not 90's and cap the ends. a 3/4" water pipe would be great to have at the top as well even if you had to put a small draw pump up top. Easy and cheep before back fill

If you have a lot of deburring to do, as shown in this video, try a swivel head deburring tool. It works wonderful on inside edges of plastic pipe and such.

after i returned from iraq, i was extremely sick and on chelation meds for the wmd that are not there but killed so many. i built a cabin over the course of a year, nothing like what you have, all by hand, and the work just killed me, but i made it happen. I remember when i turned on the power, turned on the water, and cooked my first meal inside on a stove. ya, it is a crowning achievement to say the least

AFIB is a big deal. it has been too long ago that i had a decent course on cardiac drugs (heavy medical back ground in the day), but stay as active as you can. it took my 7 years of a hand full of different drugs for me to get to where i could do anything at all. i'm still on new drugs only 4 now, but i'm able to function to a degree that building my small cabin would not have been the physical strain that it was. although i can not prove a word of this, i believe that the soldiers who were reaching out to me were not lying, i was told most of the 1500 there at FOB Chosin were dead, died of cancers, tumors and all kinds of ills. I developed pulmonary edema due to my inability to metabolize oxygen with a PO2 of 97%. my exposure to the off gassing of the chemicals stored in underground oil tanks was 125 hours basically

All the luck in the world to these two.. I am far from an expert, I just wonder why did they cover up so many of the joints with dirt before they ran water thru the system? It would be kinda hard to see a small leak if its under a foot and a half of dirt. I was kinda worried about that fire hydrant in particular, seems like a lotta joints in that area and every joint has the chance to leak. Regardless, i hope it works out.

IMPORTANT!!!!! BEFORE YOU DIG IN THAT HYDRANT, AND ALL THE YARD HYDRANTS, Remember to change those hydrant threads to a male thread on the hydrant, and a female threaded connection at the bottom. Otherwise you wont be able to put PTFE tape on the threads if you remove the hydrant for whatever reason.

Great Job - - Takes alot of "stick-to-itiveness" to tackle large projects like that. Few in our society today have learned that, ...your videos help show what it is really means. Agree with the "Quit While Your Ahead" - Trying to end the project with 'testing' usually opens up one or more Pandora's box, so you either keep working and working, or go to bed with your head about to spin off!! I've finally learned more to control project flow based on not only physical energy but "emotional" energy - these projects can suck the life out of us like a vampire if we allow them to.

just one potential problem is .if water hammer ever pulls a fitting apart IT WILL EMPTY YOUR CISTERN IN ABOUT A MINUTE. Simple on and off does create water hammer . every time .. THRUST BLOCK EVERY TRANSITION..

@laurieb3465
@laurieb3465 7 лет назад
I don't think water hammer would be an issue in there case. The pulse needs something to bounce back off like a pump. With their head pressure decreasing as they go up the hill and no solid surface for the pulse to bounce off of they should be OK.
@sc1212able
@sc1212able 7 лет назад
Russell Raposa , being a gravity fed system shouldn't be a lot of pressure, if they just crack a spicket they well be fine, I designed and built gold course irrigation systems for 40 years, you want to talk about air hammer effect, working pressure of 175 lbs,with 8 inch pipe reduced down to 1 1/2 inches at the heads, thrust blocks everywhere, especially at each head.
@jloughland
@jloughland 7 лет назад
I was wondering about that also , if you guys should or did you make some kind of a little thrust block . Didn't know if it should go down at the base of the hydrant.
@russellraposa2461
@russellraposa2461 7 лет назад
Laurie B . the water is coming down the hill ,not up hill. they are pumping up the hill into the cistern/storage tank ,from a portable tank.then gravity coming back down gives them their house pressure. and water hammer is the pushing and pulling caused by the water moving and stopping .

Great video, thanks fur sharing your journey. Please be careful entering confined spaces, don't assume that the air in there is good. If you can, force ventilate it first and be aware of the early symptoms of CO poisoning. There may also be residual fumes from the tank manufacture. Stay safe.

They mentioned in a few previous videos that they are concerned about the risk of fire and want the ability to fight it if required.
@TomBrueggen
@TomBrueggen 7 лет назад
Just curious. Is the fire hydrant a personal preference or is it something the local authority requires? It's a smart move either way, being in a remote forested area. Guess it's something I never thought of, but I'm right in the middle of the East Texas Piney Woods, and we do get the occasional forest fires. I'm rethinking my water grid to allow for fire hydrant(s) in maybe a few locations, perhaps run off of a large water pump from the pond instead of my primary potable water source.

I want to say that what you and your wife have accomplished there is commendable. Lots of hard work both in the research and the labor of installation. But at the risk of sounding like a Safety Troll I think one thing you may have overlooked in your research is the safety risk of having someone (especially your loved one) enter those tanks without proper preparation. Having worked construction for 45+ years and have installed many systems such as yours, I have seen and heard of may situations where people have entered areas such as that )confined spaces) and never made it out alive. And in many cases those that tried to assist ended up in the same predicament. Given those tanks have ben in the ground all winter and more recently in the hot sun there could be a real possibility of oxygen deficiency. Though it is obviously a little late to be mentioning I would have at least had a fan blowing fresh air into the tank with the other end open to vent. Plus I would have had a safety harness on her for a quick extraction without having a need to go in as well.

OK, I know that we don't always see what really happens on RU-vid, but I have to say from the couple episodes I have seen your always doing the grunt work (in the ditch shoveling rocks and dirt in to bucket while he operates machine, pulling the 2" pipe through the sleeve while he's lubing and pushing[wink-wink] ) so my real question is! Do you have any sisters as cute as you with that work ethic and do they want to get married?

Having worked in the water industry I don't think you went "overkill". I'm not sure you can do such a thing. By putting in a little extra like you guys did is like buying insurance to sleep easier at night. I like the fact that you sleeved your poly, extra protection. When you pulled the pipe down the hill did it affect your fittings? I didn't see any concrete being used to thrust against native soil. Do those fittings you use have internal thrusting? I'm not trying to correct or say you did something wrong, I'm just curious how internally those fittings work in that regard. Good job and thanks for sharing.

Slit corrugated plastic tile and cut a hole top and bottom to fit your hydrants crush or cap far end and cap or fold and tape hydrant end use 10' or so for drains and don't set pipes on man made bricks tiles use wood or natural stone or you will create a leak ! T steel fence post will help stabilize your hydrants when you SS hose clamp them fast.

I’ve only started watching these videos recently. (Probably been watching a lot of videos in such a short time than I’d like to admit.) I’m curious to Jesse’s previous experience before this. I wanna say Alyssa mentioned something along the lines of a contractor, but I’m not for sure.

Please! Please! Before final installation of each of the plastic fittings please take out each rubber "o" ring inside and rub it with Silicon grease. Then put it back. It will keep them in a good shape many years to come. Didi Hametaher - Water Purification & Engineering

You are right. A LOT of people don't have what it takes to do what y'all are doing. I was away from RU-vid and your channel (and other homesteading videos) for about 10 months and am SO glad to be back! You guys are inspirational for me to break away and do it myself. I am sure it is that way for a lot of us.

There are actually tools for beveling the pvc-pipes. Or you can clamp up a belt sander and just rotate the tubes/pipes. Just my 2-cents... Great work you guys!

I don't think I'm imagining this, but your videos are getting better and better. At the end of this video, I definitely experienced real emotions about your progress and your endurance in the face of hard work and things not always going as planned. I admire your spirit and sticking to it. I don't understand your piping schematic yet. But, I suppose you will show us a completed diagram of your piping installation when done. That would be very cool. I wish I were there helping you do the hard work. I love the feeling I get when it's done and we can stand back and admire our hard work well done. I am rooting for you guys!!!

Soak up those cool days all you can. I am down in Arizona and it has consistently been over 100 degrees for a while now. We even broke a record for all time high! Love your videos! Been binge watching them from the beginning for the last few days. Thanks for sharing your journey, it has been inspiring me to try and convince my husband to find some land!

You guys rock, just playing catch up on your videos. Several may have already mentioned this, but there is really no reason for a separate 3/4" fill line. You could have just tapped into the 2" at the bottom of the hill with a check valve and let the water fill the cistern by going back up the 2". Speaking as an engineer who has designed two elevated storage tanks over 1 million gallons.

homesteader to homesteader, trade or sell the quad and get a small farm tractor w min 3 PT lift or if you can afford with a loader... it's is the most valuable piece of equipment on my place , much more than my quad, goes over rougher ground ,tows heavier logs and can lift big logs into my sawmill .. everything the quad does, the tractor does better and it's only a 30 HP case ... something to think about...

I have a question. Why didn't you just put the overflow valve on the top of the tank with a check valve. So the tank would burp and you could see the water coming out? The check valve would close after it burped. Keeping bugs and debris out. Unless your overflow valve rolls down hill and you have a check valve there.
