UPDATE: for all the South Islanders who don't live near a service centre like me... (thanks EV Kiwis for reply to previous!) I booked a basic tyre rotation through the app, which scheduled a time at the Christchurch SC. As I'm in Dunedin, that's just not practical so I enquired through the app's txt feature about their mobile service. The Tesla folks soon called me back to explain. Turns out the mobile service is based out of the Christchurch service centre, and they don't (as I had earlier assumed) have them spread around the country at various locations. What this means is that my job is now on a waiting list until the mobile agent decides to make a trip south, at which time they will contact me again to arrange. They don't have a fixed schedule for this and it could be a month or more between trips. I don't mind waiting as it's simply a tyre rotation but I probably won't bother going the "official" Tesla service route for this again. Be simpler to find a good local tyre shop that you trust (if you feel confident they understand about the jack points... hmmm) Anyway, my 2 cents, hope it helps you other newbies understand what to expect. It's still early days for Tesla in NZ, so for most of us, good/convenient service still has some way to go.
Hayden thanks so much for sharing this - it's very insightful and I'm sure this will help plenty of people! Definitely makes sense to go to a local tyre shop instead and let's hope the same service experience will spread out to rest of the country in the near future. I will pin your comment so it's more visible to others 🙂
Interesting ! I finally took our Model 3 in for its first service after 17,000kms. They had the car for 30mins (while we test drove the Model Y). When we came back they said everything was perfectly fine, there no work was needed, total cost for the service was $0.00. I was quite surprised and obviously very happy.
That's amazing Ryan! Can't complain when it all comes back as being perfectly fine in the checkup 🙂 I've actually heard of cases where the Tesla Mobile Service have turned up but told people that a tyre rotation isn't required and left for no charge. So surprised that they don't even charge a minimum call-out fee!
Thank you so much for this video! My first Tesla service will be needed soon and I didn't know if I would need the wheel alignment with a tire rotation, but considering the reasonable price I will probably do both. Great info!
Hi Lisa, thanks so much - glad the video helped 🙂 I’ve heard from several people that the pricing for the wheel alignment has gone up considerably since I posted this video so would be good to check how much they quote you for it now. Tire rotation is definitely the more important one even if you decide not to get alignment done.
Same service for me cost $352 at Tesla Service Centre in Christchurch. Service was very good, but no Uber credit offered and tyre pressure was set to 46psi (when cold). When I asked service centre should it be 46 psi or 42 as per model 3 manual they apologised and confirmed it should have been 42 psi. I was not impressed by very expensive rotate and balance
Wow that's a huge difference! Was this a recent service? We got ours done just a month ago and the pricing was as mentioned for the Auckland Service Centre. Our tyres were also inflated to the correct 42 psi pressure. I wonder if lack of proper staff training is an issue for the Christchurch centre... Thanks for sharing your experience though! It's good to hear all perspectives 😊
Price is different now, Tesla Van Nuys Southern California, price was: tire rotation $50 dollars and today $65 - tire rotation and wheel alignment $340.20, this time no Uber credits and I didn't see the car being washed yet....
Thank you so much! 🙂 Alignment was actually not required. It was more of a personal choice in my case as I like to have an alignment checkup to ensure it's all okay in the very first service of the car. For the next 10,000km I would only be doing the tire rotation. Tire rotation is the more important thing in Teslas so I would highly recommend getting that done.
@@EVKiwis I’m going to switch to winter tires in mid September, so I don’t think I’m going to rotate them until after the winter months. Thanks for the awesome advice.
@@SirDragonClaw That would be insane if it's around $600! Can't see anyone going to Tesla but a local tyre shop instead in that case as there is no requirement of getting this done through an offical Tesla service center in order to maintain warranty.
Tesla service centers have DOUBLED all mentioned costs in this video. UK quotes are £260 for brake lublication £360 for the wheel alignment as of Spring / summer 2024. Parts prices also doubled since May 2024. Tesla is no longer a cheap vehicle to run. Musk reduced the price of a new vehicle but increased the cost of service and parts. Tesla requires a lot of servicing btw: Brake service every 2 years or face brake disk and pads replacement after 6-8 years Suspension bushing changes after 40k miles Transmission oil change after 60miles Thermal system pump/sensor failures PTC heater failures
Brilliant Dhruv! We've now ticked over 9000km on our Model 3 and I was literally just thinking about where I should be taking it to this week - your video was timed perfectly, thank you! On another maintenance topic... do you have any recommendations for washer fluid, or just use water? Keep it up, this sort of practical stuff is really useful, especially when talking to our non-EV friends who've yet to make the switch.
Thanks so much Hayden - glad to hear I managed to publish this one just in time then! 😀 Was hoping this would provide a good insight to those that aren't to familiar with servicing their EVs... I use the Bar's Bugs Windscreen Cleaner Concentrate along with water and it does a fantastic job. Especially in cleaning up those road trip bug splashes! This is the one I use: www.supercheapauto.co.nz/p/bars-bugs-bars-bugs-windscreen-cleaner-500ml/389160.html
Yes also had a good first service, can you imagen if your ICE dealer would top up the tank on your car for free! They do a good clean and vacuum for free but do know how to charge. Got mine in Nov 2021 and have just passed 24,000km
Haha that's an excellent point Miggy! That would be unimaginable especially given the current fuel prices 😂 Wow you have been driving a decent amount! Lots of road trips or do you have a long daily commute?
Yes correct, even Tesla give you a loaner car for longer services. I personally haven't had other companies offer a loaner car for a reasonably short 3 hour job but your experience may have been different I'm guessing.
