Hey friends! We’re still hanging out in Marrakesh & in this episode we’re working our way through some of the stuff you guys said we missed out on during our first visit to the city.
First up we’re heading for lunch at a place that serves not only the best slow cooked lamb in Morocco, but according to Gordon Ramsey, the best slow cooked lamb ever! Spoiler alert - he’s not wrong!
Next we explore the gorgeous Bahia Palace and struggle to get our heads around how such a vast series of spaces exists smack bang in the middle of such a crowded Medina.
Also on the list of things to do in Marrakesh is having a wander around the ruins of the royal Badii Palace & checking out the Saadian Tombs. We had no idea places like this existed in Marrakesh & learn so much not just about the history of this city, but Morocco in general.
Finally we round off our time in the crazy city with what we thought was going to be a relaxing spa-esq experience in a local hammam. It turns out to be anything but, however you’ll just have to tune in to hear all about that!
Catch you in the comments,
Sarah, James & Ady

This is absolutely hilarious 😂 To answer your question on frequency: traditionally, people usually go to Hamams once a week, often on a Saturday or Sunday. I brought my foreign friend to a Hamam in Tangier and she had the same reaction as you : traumatised and addicted 😂 Don't hesitate to try different Hamams as the experience can be widely different. Also, for your child, normally she can enter with either parent in a traditional Hamam. Our mothers would usually put us in buckets of water with toys and tangerines to not get bored 😂

The Hamam is the best experience even if you are moroccan,, the first thing we do as Moroccan expats when we get home , is go to Hamam,, It is mainly a weekly ritual as at the time there was no bathroom as such in all the homes,, religious poeple always go on Thursday night or Friday morning to get ready for prayers.. but it's a thing that we can't do without as Moroccans.

@@luxraider5384most do, this is a fact....some people recently started to not go because they literally started building their own small hammam inside their homes with a similar experience and rituals....most Moroccans can't be satisfied with just taking showers, they need to scrub dead skin and have so all the usual ritual one a week or once every two weeks as I said to feel like they are clean....regular showers don't do it for most of us

I laughed so hard at your hammam experience 😂 To answer Jay's question, Moroccans usually go to the hammam once a week, especially during winter as a house shower does not give the same feeling. By the way, you can ask (using sign language) the person doing the scrubbing to do it softer if it is too hard for you as the experience is not meant to be painfull and they wouldn't know if you don't make it known that you are uncomfortable with the hard scrubbing. Good adventures!

As a Moroccan we go to the hammam once a week but if you can afford it twice is ideal. It is an experience/ritual to be had, it makes you feel “clean&lighter” and they are not one size fits all but the outcome is the same! It is also a way to connect with your community and gossip a bit 😊 Welcome to Morocco 🤙🏼

I'm Moroccan, HAMAM is traditional. it has history.. grandparent and before them used it, these you will find them in popular places, old places , morocco still preserves its tradition. there are people who used their own hamam (bathroom) in their houses and use hot water and system to heat the wall however there are who prefer Hamam of the street; Hamam means bathroom in arabic (حمام)

So Hammam for Moroccans is a weekly thing and Mostly on weekends where most of people are off work or school. I think you guys went to some old Hammam which explains the "ok" condition of it and the type of the service you got there. Actually, there are some newer ones, more expensive, but the service and faculty are both outstanding. Overall, what really matters is the experience you got to see and live and you absolutely come out as a new person. Thanks for sharing.

Thoroughly entertaining and interactive video! I loved it.Thank you for sharing. That is definitely some lamb! You are a monarch's chef for a reason! And they do clean you properly in the hammam! There is a Moroccan saying: "Entering the hammam is not like exiting it" indicating the two different stages but also the need to pay after you had your lovely bath, and if you don't, you will be in trouble! Moroccans traditionally go to the hammam every Friday, which is considered a holy day in Islam ( Friday prayer) after which it is Couscous time!! To your second question, it is definitely an emphatic Yes! It is simply an experience not to miss while in the country. After all,who doesn't want to be born again! I'm impressed by your history homework on the Saadyyine Tombs. They were such a powerful dynasty before the current Alouites that they reached current Sudan. Sultan Moulay Ismail, as you mentioned, is believed to father hundreds of children, but he was most importantly the longest serving king ever in the history of Moroccan dynasties, 55 years in charge! Interesting facts in Giles Milton's White Gold which you probably read already. Next video, please !

@@TheTataouino they aren't europeanized, what are you even saying? The historic hammams here were more extravagant in terms of architecture more than any luxurious hammam nowadays.... don't talk about something you know nothing about please because you're just spreading misinformation... it's like saying anything that looks good and more sophisticated is European.....look at that hammam they found in Andalusia in recent years that was left there by our ancestors and see how the architecture was and the Hammad experience was overall.....the ones we find today in streets are not how they used to be, they are just more practical and cheap....if anything the expensive traditional (beldi) ones nowadays reflect more what they used to be like

Most of the comments are already giving you all the info you need on hammams hahaha one thing i would like to add is that the little child can go in with her mother but if you do take her in you should be able to handle her and keep her busy and sitting next to you, you don't want her running on a slippery hammam flour hahaha otherwise i wouldn't recommend it for u to take her inside. And also here's some things to expect next time you go to a hammam and some tips/facts : - i always recommend avoiding going to the hammam on the last 3 days of the week as they can be kinda crowded (Friday, Sunday, Saturday) - some hammams are old, others are new, some can be well decorated and some can be just plain but every single one is special and good in a way, it's always gonna be a different experience when visiting a new one. - men can only take 2h max in a hammam while women can take up to 5h inside - always expect to lay down directly on the floor sometimes, unless you buy your own hammam mat (i recommend doing that) which brings me to my 2nd point which is that you should always poor some water on the area you want to sit in. - hammams have usually more than 3 rooms, one leads into the other, the further you get the hotter the room gets, the last room is the hottest, i recommend changing the rooms as you go. If you want to have the perfect hammam experience here are the steps that every Moroccan guy follows (as for women they include their own beauty routine like henna, some traditional natural hair products like "ghasoul"...etc) here are the steps in general : - getting the ticket, buying the "saboun beldi" soap, you get inside the dressing room, remove you cloths (keep the underwear lol) put them in your bag and give them to the man in the desk and he gives you a couple of buckets with numbers on them then you go inside. - you go straight to the last room of the hammam, wash you buckets and the area you choose to lay down on then fill your buckets with water, then you poor some on yourself and sit there on the hot floor for a bit, rub the traditional soap on your whole body (not your face) and lay down for a couple minutes on your back, then on you stomach and finally on both sides then you wash off all the soap and get out before you get too tired from the heat. - when you go out to a medium heat room (not the coldest) you now have to scrub all the dead skin off your whole body then wash it, you can now either stay in the same room or switch to the coldest one after you're done scrubbing to wash your hair with shampoo and body with soap and you're good to go. This is how Moroccans do it, sometimes they hire the guy there to scrub them off and massage them etc which i recommend for you guys because you wouldn't know what to do hahahahaha even with my tips it can take quite a while for you to memorize and get familiar with the routine and how things work, because if you're alone sometimes you'll run into people asking you to scrub their backs off and they'll do the same for you hahahaha it's a helping community but you should get used to it first before attempting it by yourself.

Hamams in Morocco have 3 areas, the changing room, the wash areas with hot water and the 3rd and best room, the hot floor sauna, after being scrubbed and washed you can go into the 3rd area and sleep on the floor, it's very good for your back. My best hamam experience was in moulay yacoub, the water was hot spring coming directly from the mountains, smell of sulphur permeating the air but amazing experience nonetheless.

Hari Om Brilliant stuff - emersive travelling! What is to be remembered is that communal bathing existed in the UK right up pretty much until the second world war... when houses started being built with (gasp) fully plumbed bathing facilities for private use! I recall that the Edinburgh bath house was open and in use even until the mid 1980s. So many flats hardly even had toilets, let alone showers or baths. That said, I don't think there was anyone else doing the scrub down (then again, that might have been a private arrangement 🥴) It is also one of the reasons that the Brits are considered by many other cultures to be 'dirty' - that weekly bath was pretty much all that was done for personal hygiene, unlike the daily bucket wash that is common in India and Africa and so on. Anyway - fun visit and topic! Love that Ady considers your walkabout to be food-focused, given the attempt to eat the carrier strap! Give her a squeeze from me. YAM xx

I know what you mean, I'm Moroccan myself but I didn't go to any Hammam until I was a bit older It's strange at first, but it gets immensely addicting with time, and let me tell you something: if you got used to it, you'll never ever feel really "clean" no matter how and where else you wash yourself lol As for your question: people used to do it once a week, this is because most households in the old medinas couldn't afford to build a personal washroom since it took space, not to mention it was expansive to get running water in a house. so there would usually be public hammams in every street where people would go every week to wash themselves. Nowadays however, with most houses equipped with showers, I would say it became more of a once a month thing to most people who still keep the tradition.

Usually once a week on Sundays just before we start a new week work. Some go on Friday mornings so it depends. Some on occasions like being invited to a wedding or an important meeting so they look their best.😊I would say twice a week is more than enough, personally I only go once a week. Hope this helps 🙏.

This is so hilarious, you described it perfectly. Now imagine being a kid they put u in a bucket with toys and oranges and you get to watch that chaos before it's ur turn to get cleaned up haha

Marrakech médina is so big it’s a city on its own go and visit where people live not just the tourists areas. You might spot the inside of the houses because most of locals live in massive houses like what’s known as Rhiyad. Only few have been sold locals still live in their big houses.

The normal frequency for going to Hammams is once a week, but it could be for others once in two weeks or once every month.

Men usually go once a week to the hammam, day before Friday prayer. And the others days they just shower at home.

Personally i go once a week or once every 10 days. I don't like being twisted around so i don't let him do it, i just want to be exfoliated. He shouldn't scrub you till you are "raw", just tell him not to scrub so hard. You should also buy some clay called Ghasoul (everyone in Morocco knows what it is), then he rubs it onto you at the end, keep it on for 5 or 10 mins then just rince it off, you will see how soft your skin becomes. Ghasoul is cheap get about 15 dhs worth of it, it is more than enough, you can put it on your hair as well, and you can get it in any medina shop that sells spices anywhere in Morocco. Same for women as well.

yes showering is only good to remove odor and sweat basically, only Hammam you can feel really CLEAN, most moroccans go once a week and the value far exceeds the little price you pay (in normal hammams)
