Will it fly, will it crash, will we break a record! Today is a day that our 20 foot monster biplane finally starts taking shape. With only one week left before the big day, the whole team groups together to start putting the pieces of their new flying machine in place. This design features a 20 foot wingspan, two sets of wings, and a whole lot of hopes and dreams. To test the prototype, Josh builds a 40% model to launch and measure the distance. The results are incredible! The red Bull flugtag is just around the corner and we’re not gonna hold anything back! Come join in the journey!

To save weight, make the tailboom triangular instead of square, it'll be stronger and lighter.

Same, I used this design on my glider. It’s really stronk and ultra light. It only broke at the glue joint connecting it to the main fuselage.

@@_BL4CKB1RD_ 🔴 What Is Islam? 🔴 Islam is not just another religion. 🔵 It is the same message preached by Moses, Jesus and Abraham. 🔴 Islam literally means ‘submission to God’ and it teaches us to have a direct relationship with God. 🔵 It reminds us that since God created us, no one should be worshipped except God alone. 🔴 It also teaches that God is nothing like a human being or like anything that we can imagine. 🌍 The concept of God is summarized in the Quran as: 📖 { “Say, He is God, the One. Awesome! I was watching "the best of Flugtag" and one plane was mounted on a "catapult" trolley that went twice as fast as the pushers walking speed. About 2/3 the way through, they pulled a handle and the plane shot off a rail on the trolley. Good luck!

@@FliteTestthis reminds me of ski jump events where they shorten the downhill length to keep the landings in a safe zone. Maybe the reason is similar. They have a limited space for the landing zone. But the rules are the same for every team, so it's a good competition. So, good luck if the event is still ahead of you! You did a great deal of research and tests to get the best possible result! Many others are there just for the fun of it and might go straight down, but you knever know if there is another team that has been working hard too...

I recommend the pilot be able to run the plane off of the edge like a hang glider. If you use a launch cart I recommend making it uniformly collapsible so it can drop just before the edge. You don’t want the launch cart to impart a nose down moment on the aircraft when you reach the edge.

I very occasionally check out the Flugtag events, but I also used to go to Oshkosh for their annual fly-in event (I live over a thousand miles away from that, now, so... not in the cards anymore). Those were good days. Anyway: looks like you're on the right track for a winning in Flugtag! As noted by a colleague in the video, "If we can go as far as the model did, we got this!" (Or, you know, words to that effect). Lookin' good, guys! I went ahead and sub'd and hit the bell button-- I want to see the finished product WIN!

Its looking promising! I agree with changing from a negative wing stagger. I'm not totally convinced that my reasoning is valid, though. Mine has to do with downward flowing air off the trailing edge of the upper wing entraining air and "boosting" lift off the trailing edge of the lower wing. What was your reason for changing?

Keep in mind that a small breeze would be the scale equivalent of a small gale. 😛 You might want to focus on designing a launching mechanism (if it’s allowed by the rules). The more momentum you can gain on launch, the more you’ll have to work with in the air and airspeed for controlling the glider. Maybe your team jumping off the platform could act like a counterweight to launch the glider, sort of like the Wright Brothers used for their early planes. Alternatively you could build a tall launch platform to give you a little extra height to work with, though it might be harder to push due to weight and air resistance.

if you make a cart that the pilot can run off of and with the cart being pushed by the rest of the team you will get a much higher launch speed without any mechanical devices. The length of the cart needs to be long enough to get 4 or 5 steps for the pilot. also make the cart as light as possible too.

Guys, you know Peter Sripol, he's worked with you. Check out his iterations of electric ultralight - he abandoned the biplane idea pretty fast. Two wings generate a lot of drag but not too much lift. Parasol or high wing configuration would be best (like fokker D.VIII, single wing mounted on struts). Another upside of such configuration is that you could use cables or struts to reinforce wing by attaching them to wing and fuselage, it'd save a bit of weight too since you wouldn't need as durable spars. Also I'd go for openwork tail construction to decrease weight as much as possible, possibly do it with CF rods (unless they're forbidden) and shift CG strictly with pilot, not extra weight, but I guess with a plane so light as long as the pilot sits where CG should be it should be fine
