OUR WORST TRAVEL EXPERIENCE IN ARGENTINA! 27 HOURS ON A BUS!
As the title suggests, this was definitely not an experience we would like to repeat. Not only was the bus expensive in comparison to every other bus we have ever taken, it was also the worst bus which wasn’t helped by the amount of time we had to spend on it, 27 hours! Never again, we decided after this journey that our limit on a bus journey is around 14 hours if we really have to.
Buses in Argentina are notorious for being a bit ‘rough around the edges’ but as with most things there are some good and some bad. Unfortunately for us, due to the pandemic (which has already prevented us crossing over to Torres Del Paine in Chile) all the bus services between El Chalten/Calafate to Bariloche were suspended except for one which means that that one bus service that only goes once a day gets booked up very quickly.
We tried to book the bus to Bariloche on our first day in El Chalten and were told that there were no buses on the day we had planned to leave, this left us in a tricky situation as due to the high cost of the bus we only had enough cash on us to pay for the bus tickets and our accommodation costs in El Chalten. We did not have enough to pay for the two extended days to wait for the bus availability. This is because there is no Western Union in El Chalten, there is one regular ATM that gives a horrendous rate and would have literally cost us hundreds more. So we had no choice but to get the bus back to El Calafate so that we could access some cash and then book our bus from there to Bariloche. Going back on ourselves by bus was not ideal but it was the only option we were left with.
Once we arrived back in El Calafate we found out that the bus tickets in two days time had also sold out and the next bus was not available for another four days (this really makes us miss the luxury of booking tickets online). So we had to spend an extra four days in El Calafate waiting to get on the bus which turned out to be the worst bus ever!
Despite the four day delay and a lot of re planning and running around we finally made it to the destination that seemed so out of reach!
