We went car-free for a year using the city bus or a cargo bike for family trips. We just added two kiddos to our family and were able to get an old van from a church for a super low price we were able to pay cash. Our biggest saver is not driving unless we have to: staying home and staying as local as possible.

Exactly. I’m not trying to spend money on things that don’t matter but just trying to keep my head above water. If something bad happens to me I don’t want to be upside down in things that I couldn’t afford at the time in the first place. But used cars is the way to go to pay it off in less than 6 months.

LOL, unless you can walk, paying for someone to take you places will cost a lot more than a car. Car prices, just like housing, are out of control. But they told us we would own nothing and be happy. Seems like they are pushing owning nothing really hard right now.

I just bought a 2002 Chrysler Sebring in November for $1850 CA$H! It had 169k, and looks and smells BRAND NEW on the inside, and rides like new, I believe, because the person who had it before me, took care of it. It doesn't have ANY funky smells, rips, tears, worn-out parts, etc. You can even eat a sandwich off the floors! 🤣 Even the DRIVER'S SEAT looks brand new, as if it had just been installed! The exterior is in great shape as well. I TRULY believe I lucked up 🍀 on this one! 🎉🥳💥💯

I'm getting ready to trade in my 2002 Alero - runs great but has some major rust issues. 159,500 miles. You found a gem of a car! I'm 68 hoping to find a nice used car to last me till I'm too old to drive. My car insurance keeps going up and up! Its kinda insane for a 21 year old car. I have saved up $$$ to pay cash.

I know this is an unpopular opinion but I am a believer in new cars. Up until a few months ago I was a believer in the drive it till it dies club. My used car ended up costing me a ton of money in repairs (that could have gone to paying off a new car), more maintenance, so much stress because it had become unreliable-even costing me days off of work, and ended up only being worth less than $1,000 on its death day. Mind you, this was a less than 10 year old Subaru. A new car provides so many things...peace of mind, warranty, reliability, worth, etc. It may seem like it costs more but overall, I think a new car is worth the cost.

Of course you should do what works for you. Most people don't have DIY skills of any kind, I'm in my 60's and when I was coming of age every young man seemed to do a lot of their own car work repairs and maintenance (the cars were simpler). I still do almost all my own car work, I've pulled engines, done clutches, etc. Subaru makes a safe car, but probably would not be my choice for long term reliability or low cost repairs.

Well I'm right there with ya. I finally had to bite the bullet and buy me a new car too. For years I've been driving around in what is now a 21 year old Honda Element and an 18 year old Toyota. I just got a 2024 Rav4 hybrid last week. It's a 4x4 and gets about 39 mpg, which is just crazy. But I have a car payment of just over $600 per month now Lol. The way I figured it was like this... I was putting back $400 a month to buy my next vehicle. It would've taken me about 8 YEARS to save up enough money to buy what I have now, for example. And by that time, how much more is the msrp going to be on that same car? $5,000 more? $10,000 more? Who knows?! Then I had to figure how much I've been spending just to keep the two old cars I have on the road: I've been averaging AT LEAST $200 a month, I do know that-- and that's doing nearly all the work myself! The Honda Element in particular has needed a lot of work lately. The engine and transmission haven't given me any problems but the suspension was really underbuilt for the weight of the vehicle and things were ALWAYS wearing out. Every time you turn around it was something else. I loved that car, but that just got old. And then there's the stress of worrying about breaking down on the way to work, like you mentioned. I honestly think the stress from that was worse than the stress from the car payment will be. Lol. The final thing that helped me make my decision was that Toyotas (even the Rav4 hybrids) have a pretty good resale value. So when I get it paid off it'll still be worth enough to lower my car payment a good bit if I trade it in for another new one (probably down to below $400 the next time around)... Which is exaclty what I plan on doing since I know for damn sure that I won't be able to do major repairs on this car like I could with my older ones. I absolutely hate debt of any kind- and I've always admired and respected people like Dave Ramsey for his message- but in some cases I really think it DOES make good financial sense to buy a new car. Besides.... SOMEBODY has to buy all these new cars ;)

Subaru vehicle have engine and head gasket issues. Getting an extended warranty would have saved you money. You can also get a refund if you never use the warranty.

In most rural areas, owning a car is a must have situation. No public transportation unless you are disabled, too old to drive or something. In my humble opinion, the days of buying a new car every year or so is over for most folks. The newer the car the more insurance you will pay especially if it is a sports car or 4-wheel drive. We haven't bought a new car since 1986. We haven't had a car loan since 2011. We save up and buy a good used car at a reasonable price normally from an individual not a used car dealer. We have gotten two lemons, and they were both from dealers. So, we try to avoid used car dealers if possible. But we have bought some from dealers that were good cars. We had one for about 11 years and we gave it to our son to drive because he couldn't afford a car at the time and his broke down. He drove it for another 5 years or so and sold it. Do research before buying cars because some are more reliable than others.

We’re a one car household. :) Someone stole our second car and wrecked it, so we were forced into that situation but it turns out that…. Two years down the road, it ain’t so bad. We’re fortunate to have lots of sidewalks and pedestrian friendly infrastructure, so we often walk to the store, library, park, etc. it’s definitely inconvenient at times, but I enjoy not paying for another car’s insurance and lease. Our car is a cash car and it’s 19 years old 🎂 🎉 LOL

Millionaire here and drive 1999 Toyota Corolla. Window doesn't roll down, handles of the doors falling apart and bunch of dents. It runs so no maintenance beside the wheel and oil change.

Still have my 2005 Toyota Camry that my husband and I share. I work from home so that's why it's possible for us. 210k miles and counting. If I can get 2 more years out of it I would feel so blessed. The prices are insane and insurance keeps going up for no reason.

Your cost of living in the US, including car prices , housing, food etc arent high compared to some other developed countries. But Americans are feeling the pinch because your income hasnt kept pace with inflation. The average American is earning less than those living in Australia, Singapore, UK. Your taxes are higher than some of these countries where wages are higher.Therein lies the problem.

I purchased a new to me 2021 volvo xc40 last November. $31,000. 14,000 miles. Paid cash. Car is under warranty for another 2 years. Routine maintenance included while under warranty. Insurance remained the same. I live in Metro Atlanta. I'm loving the car. I previously had a 2006 volvo s60 sedan. Of course it was paid off. I only purchase cars (and everything else) with cash.

My 2007 Toyota Matrix is working well. I bought it for cash 2 years ago for $3,400. Turns out it needed some major repairs but not motor or tranny. I baby stepped the repairs to pay cash. It did need a whole new exhaust system including a catalytic converter last summer. I bit the bullet and did it even though the mechanic told me to get a new car. Car prices were way more so I had it done. It starts, has heat, is roomy and is reliable. Gets decent gas mileage, too.

Man, didn’t realize this. I am making my last car payment in a few days in March! Yeah! I just looked up the price of my current car and it is literally double than I paid 4 years ago. 😮 I have no plans on buying another car because mine should be good for SEVERAL more years. I also downsized substantially and bought a very small car 4 years ago. Do I miss my SUV? Yeah, I won’t lie I do. But, as a single person, I only needed a small vehicle. I can get 40+ mpg on trips with freeway driving. I regularly get 35 in town. I guess that’s all I really know to do. Keep as small a car as possible for your family, keep up with the maintenance and make it last years. (By the way, I kept my last car until it was nearly 20 years old with 287K miles on it!)

Been very lucky. Father, brother, husband all excellent mechanics. No desire for wasting money on a new car and only one minor fender bender by me 40+ years ago. Been hit and damaged by others. Fixed car minimally and kept extra from insurance. You do know it's intentional, right. They want to price you out or band you from driving/owning. They want you in a Hong Kong skyscraper style city. 15 mins. What they care about is that your controllable.

I’ve been changing the oil and brakes and even more complex repairs on my car since I was 16. It’s not a new concept it’s a generational thing. When my dad was doing stuff I paid attention and learned what he had to offer. He told me a man who is self reliant is the true meaning of a man. Where there’s a will there’s a way. Problem has been there’s been no will for along time.

I live in South Australia , I own a 25 year old Toyota Camry, it only has 220000 kilometres on it if I need parts I go to U Pull It wreckers where you remove the parts yourself, I paid 2900 dollars for it 5 years ago and it had 132000 kilometres on it when I bought it

We own outright, only by second hand, used electric that requires less maintenance & is cheaper to operate. Insurance wise, we adjusted our deductibles on each vehicle based on age/use, and shop rates. They still are going up though… even with a perfect driving record.

I just bought a car for myself and a car for my mom. My moms car is a 2007 Mercury Grand Marquis price $3700. My car 2000 Lincoln LS $3400. I dont know why people would pay more. I got my 99 Silverado for $4000 in 2020. I simply dont understand other peoples vehicle shopping.

We're in an area where public transportation is insufficient to work for us. We drive a 16 year old car and we haven't been putting a lot of miles on it the last few years. Trying to lower the miles you drive, look for the cheapest gas station near where you are or where you're going to be, shop for insurance, and maintain the car are the tips I have.

$15K will get you a Toyota Land Cruiser or Lexus LX (same thing) with under 120K miles. They will last 400K MINIMUM.

I loved your video. Great points and insights! After I paid off my 2017 Subaru Forester, I continued making monthly "payments" into a savings account. (I've subsequently deposited it into a low cost index fund which makes me a few grand per year in interest), I now have enough to cover a new Forester in cash, or fix anything that can possibly break in the future. I intend to drive my car until the wheels fall off. It currently has 103K on the clock, and lately, I have been driving less than 10K per year.

We are a one car household. We swore our last financed car would be our last financed car. 4 months after our last payment the engine seized. Known issue with the Kia, but ours wasn’t covered under the recall. Long story short.. chose to finance another but went with the smallest most reliable vehicle we could get away with and paying it off aggressively. I’m so sick of handing my income to interest and payments. Fighting my way out of them all.

Been driving a 2015 Hyundai Accent since 2017. Car is paid off. Parts are very cheap easy to work on, and got 120,000 Miles and Counting. Paint starting to fade a little bit but it's mechanically sound no reason to get another one with car prices and interest rates so high

@raising wildflowers - not sure what kind of car you are wanting to buy but I know at one time you had a smaller vehicle so maybe you don't mind another small vehicle. I just googled a brand new honda civic and you can still get those under 30k. I mean 30k is still ridiculous but just bringing this up since you said an average used vehicle cost 30k. seems like everyone wants an suv or a truck so they just cost more. my car is 10 years old and fingers crossed, it lasts me another 10 years.

I need a car. Right now I have a honking giant 1998 dodge ram van. I’m driving it until it’s time for it to get towed to the junkyard. Gas mileage isn’t great, but it’s paid for and it’s dependable.

I need two vehicles for my job. A daily driver & a back up vehicle. My job requires me to be at work 24/7 when I’m called in. Public transportation is not an option. My daily driver is a 1997 GMC Suburban. It has 222,000 miles on it. I’ll drive it until the wheels fall off. I have been doing my own oil changes since I started driving. I also grease the front end. I used to do brakes but find it too daunting now with advancing age. I farm out the rest of my repairs to a local garage. My back up is a 2005 Chevrolet Avalanche with 28,000 miles on it. Only thing I have done on that is oil changes. That is the best riding vehicle I have ever owned! I can’t fit in any cars. I’m freakishly large at 6’8” tall & 290 pounds. Both my trucks were modified with the drivers seat lowered & moved back so I can drive it. My insurance is about $10 a week on each vehicle. That’s with comprehensive & $500 deductible on collision. No matter what they say I keep collision on my trucks with my insurance that low. Some dope crashed into my parked Suburban while I was dining at a local restaurant. It cost me $3800 to repair it. Because I don’t get in accidents or get speeding tickets my insurance company absorbed the deductible on the collision. My out of pocket cost was zero.

I sold my 2012 Mazda3 almost 2 years ago to CarMax for more than the blue book at the time. Yeah, they were raking it in then for used cars and probably still are. We can get by just fine with our 2018 Hyundai Tuscon for a long time. We don't put many miles on it in a year.

Bought a used 2006 Honda Odyssey 4 years ago for $6k and have done all the maintenance ourselves. We also have a used 2014 Honda Civic we paid $5k for 2 years ago. We are in Florida and only pay about $100 a month for insurance for both. I don’t understand how people are surviving in this economy with the enormous payments they’re making on their fancy vehicles. I’ll drive my old Hondas for as long as they drive me.

300 for a brake change. Is cheap. Where I live. 1k is not unusual and this is for a sedan not a bougie car. 76.00 for an oil change -synthetic. Over 100 for wiper blades. 160 for a battery. It's insane

I recommend contacting your insurabce carrier if you do not drive much. My insurance carrier contacted me about how few miles i drive and lowered my premium. Also, i do not recommend carrying comprehensive insurance if you drive an older car. However, I'd recommend setting the money saved aside for the day that you may need to replace your car.

We drive older cars, I have 2010 Malibu, he has a 2005 Cadillac. We use one place for all our repairs, we have been going there for years and they have a record of all the work. We have talked about just having 1 car, not sure how I really feel about that.

Wow ! where I live in Singapore you wouldnt get a 10 year old Lexus for that price. A brand new rx350 costs about 450K SGD / 350k USD

Unfortunately, if you’re handicapped you’re stuck having to go a garage. We have an honest mechanic. Most of his business are autos 10-15 yrs. old and some me even older. My insurance company wanted to go a salvage garage for parts just to save money. Our car insurance for 2 is 3K$ yearly. Thanks for this video.

Great video! I don't want to sell my car, it still works because I maintain it every 4 to 6 months and it helps me get from point A to point B, it is a 2003 Toyota Camry v6, it has 110,000 miles. The car is horrible on the outside, it needs a complete restoration, new paint, and I have already made a quote in several places and they are charging me $3,000 to $3,500 to do that work. Much more expensive than that car is worth. Unfortunately, that car is not suitable for me to work in delivery's, because it is aesthetically UGLY, but I have no installments to pay and I pay less than $100 for car insurance (liability) monthly. I really want to buy another Toyota with less than 8 years of manufacture but yes, they are very very expensive, I am frugal and minimalist, I am saving money to relocate this year. I don't know what to do, I keep going and I keep thinking If I finance another Toyota for the difference of $ 5,000 or not 🤔🤔🥴The maximum for me to pay for a used car is $10,000, I have $5,000 cash and I would finance $5,000 Max Btw I live in South Florida

I was searching for a car for my daughter it was impossible. Used cars were new car prices almost. I just gave her my old car and bought myself a new one. I had that in the plan but not for a couple more years.

The big expense of car ownership in the Bay Area is the insurance. That’s why I focus on older well maintained vehicles, to be able to afford the insurance.

We have what I see as a perfectly good car from 2015. Our dear government here (we live in Europe) needs us to get repairs done for the equivalent of usd 4'500 or they will take away our number plates as it's illegal to drive the car unless it passes a state issued test. Way to keep the car market going, right friends!? 😂 Anyways, so we decided now to get a newer car. We buy used with relatively low mileage and don't raise our standards. Meaning, stick shift, cd-player (which I actually prefer) and no backward driving camera and things like that. After a few weeks of looking we were able to get a 2018 Kia with relatively low mileage for equ. usd 11'000. I think it's still too much.

This is the prime car season, tax returns. People get a chunk of money from their tax return and use it to buy a car. Summer is a better time, dealers lower their price causing individual sellers to lower their price. Surprisingly, I’m seeing lower dealer prices on new cars. A new 2024 Toyota Camry LE, metallic black, $25,500, a drop of $3k from 2 months ago. I love 💗 Toyota Camrys. I bought my brand new 2019 Toyota Camry LE for $18,500, so $25,50 seems a big jump of $7k.

If you can do maintenance or know someone that will do it for a reasonable price get an older vehicle in the best condition you can find it before 2008. Newer vehicles are made cheaply with two many electrical components that either cost two much to fix or you have to have the dealer program these electrical components to your car. Insurance will be cheaper on an old car and will be more reliable than most of the newer vehicles. If you cant fix an old car get the cheapest new or slightly used stock vehicle you can get. There's 20000 new vehicles you don't need the most popular hundred thousand dollar car that gives you back messages. Let your attachments go they will just bring more pain trying to hold on to it and Maintain. The world is going to learn the hard way that bigger and fancier is not better.

Currently shopping for a second car, it makes more sense to just buy a brand new one right now. Used prices are not much less than the price of new without warranty and more chances of issues.

I think I'm just going to have to keep the car I have for longer (it's a pretty new car but not the best for my lifestyle). I feel like buying a jeep but I promised myself to buy land first. I pay for a broken down van every month and learned the hard way about car loans.

I was planning on running my 2011 Honda Accord into the ground. During the pandemic, needed to replace starter at 60k miles which was disappointing. Started to have other issues. If I didn't have my young child, I would have dealt with it but need reliability with a child. Bought it new in 2011 for $17k which was a great deal. Due to used car shortage in 2022, I was able to get $9k for it. Unfortunately majorly had to overpay for my current car. Paid cash and it was painful.

Yeah car insurance is INSANE!!! We switched insurance carriers for house, 2 never had a car payment vehicles that are 14 & 12 years old respectively, the umbrella insurance so we could save on our insurance. Switching from the one we’d had for years … saved us $7K for MORE coverage. That’s just INSANE to me. Like all of that … that we got on our new coverage IS LESS THAN what we paid to insure JUST OUR HOUSE last year. I can’t even imagine having to deal with a car payment. I’ve heard they (car payments) are more than $700-1000+ … A MONTH!!!! That’s like RENT $$ (or what it used to be to pay for rent over 10 years ago) That’s so crazy to me!!!

I can’t say what im doing is right but This is what I’m doing. I own few cars, newest of them being 2005. I daily drive 04 Acura with 260k miles that I purchased for $2500 in 2021. Radio doesn’t work but ac does! Because my car is cheap, I just put liability insurance where I can save more money. If it’s totaled, I can go buy another car around 5k that will last me 5yrs. I save by not having car payment, liability only insurance and with the saved up money, I’ll always have a backup plan or two. All my cars were bought used, pretty much at rock bottom, I can sell them for more than what I paid after all my usage
