Well idk....for Kickstarter campaign their goal was 600 000 dollars and for that they would have only updated the game's visuals, pretty much what they now managed to do for this remake. So I would assume the game's budget was somewhere between 600 000 and 1 million. But yes, to be able to fully remake the game, its dated gameplay and poor quality animations, they would have needed much bigger budget. Its a shame that those updated visuals really bring Outcast to life in entirely new way, the game looks incredibly good at times for low budget release, but the gameplay itself as well as those animations/character models obviously are not at the same level and its darn shame, cause Outcast would have deserved those things to be updated to modern day as well. As for Outcast 2, I wouldnt hold my breath unless some bigger company/publisher would be able to see the potential and fund the development. They would at very least need some-one like THQ Nordic to back them up, even more preferably some-one like Microsoft to bring modern triple A game budget and then we would have a chance to get proper, modern sequel to Outcast. But from the sales of this remake (and Outcast 1.1) alone? Not a chance and like said BigBen is small publisher without the kind of funds that would be required for Outcast 2.

It was such a great game and deserved a better remake. My friend Doug was one of the original game's designers and without him and the other designers returning you were never going to get something memorable like the first game.

@@rafael16759 Doug said it's the same game updated so if you liked the original then you're basically playing the game again with an upgrade. Btw, they lost the original sound recordings so this had to be redone from the paper records (music, dialogue and effects)

They should remake the intro with the new graphics engine.

@@pajdovelicanstveni I did, yeah. It was brilliant and bizarre and a little bittersweet. To finally get to play it after so long was very satisfying. Obviously, compared to modern titles it's not as complex, and a lot of the improvements we've made in game design are noticeably missing. At the same time, a lot of the homogonising games have gone through since was lacking. I love the story, and the twists it took. Comparisons to modern games fall flat when I consider how old the game is, though. Outcast was implementing so many gameplay elements long before they became standard. If I'd been able to play the game back in '99 I think it'd be one of my most talked about and loved games. Outcast should be up there as one of the trail blazers of gaming history. It does so many things we take for granted now. It's sad that, for whatever reason, it never became the success it should have been.

What did I say wrong? The original was amazing back in 1999, this new remake, while good and all, does not repeat the same thing nowadays. If that's hard to do or impossible is another question.

Raven Gaming revolutionary voxel tech? You're a funny guy! Voxel was an overaged technique in '99...but they mixed up voxel/pixel techniques, that's why the game was looking damn good back those days, even the max. resolution was under 640*480... ;)

Still cool to see the jump in technology and u still have the orignal available i think what rockstar did wit the gta trilogy is bad u should be able to own both the port and the remake

yeah. but unfortunately this voice is now in the remake somehow out of place. The german voice was perfect for 1999, but not for the new 2017 character model, which looks like a mid-twenty guy.

Yeah it was one the best game developed on Python. Nice story line and awesome combat with special attacks and the blade of light ...truly ahead of it's time comparing other games in 90's . There was never a remake but yeah after few years they launched some Patches for graphics improvement and glitches. I used to enjoy glitches too LOL

It's been a while since I compared the games, but as far as I remember, the inventory and controls were better in the remaster. However, the charm of the original was missing. It could be that there are patches or mods for the original that improve the controls and inventory so that you have the old graphics. Both games are currently available on GOG for less than 2 €/$, so you're not taking a big risk with your purchase, and you can still return the games within 30 days.

Yep, much better than the 1999 version. Still, many fake hardcore twats criticize everything about the remake, thinking they are very edgy, while the truth is that they are just behaving like grumpy old fucks who can't appreciate anything new and cling to the old.

They did have human facial features if you look at the original concept art but with flatter noses and a bit more reptilian look. The new ones look kinda generic

True, but then again the developers simply didnt have enough money for that. If the Kickstarter campaign had been major success, then maybe, but alas, they had to deal with whatever BigBen (small European publisher) could provide them. Either way this remake surely would have benefitted from updated gameplay, especially if it wanted to attract any new fans, but atleast for Outcasts fans like me its still better than nothing. Still I hope the developers had realistic expectations that with this outdated gameplay, the game is surely not for everyone. Atleast you gotta give them credit after all these years for finally getting the the rights to the IP back to themselves and even after the Kickstarter campaign failed not giving up, that no matter what they made this remake happen. And atleast they did great job with the one thing they had originally set up to do with this remake and its the updated visuals/graphics....for low budget release Second Contact's environments can look absolutely gorgeous at times, all the details on vegetation and such is really top notch....if only they had money to also put on animations and significant gameplay improvements, this would have been perfect remake. As it is, it definitely requires open mind for anyone who didnt play the original game to try to ignore its dated aspects.

JPowellCreative Well I can definitely understand that if you are younger generation of gamer or have gotten way too much used to better gameplay, then I can understand that going back 20 years in terms of gameplay and game design can be something that some players simply cannot enjoy... In that regard remasters/remakes like this and Age of Empires Definitive Edition are only good/enjoyable for those of us who can look past those dated aspects and just enjoy our old favorite classic games with better graphics and visuals (and in terms of AoE Definitive Edition, also remastered soundtrack)

There is no lie in what he said. The colors are far less vivid and pronounced in the newer versions design. I also, personally, prerfer the voxel look. They should have kept voxels s the baseline for the design.

The remake is admirably sincere. They had to add detail. Pure polygonal recreation of voxel terrain would just be bland.
