Not a feeling of frustration like it when we think if we only chose a different sequence or prioritise slightly differently, tough job. I only lamb a fraction of what you guys lamb, 100 ish, but there is no way I’d lamb in a field that size no matter how many I had, too hard. Smallish field and spend few quid on some nice Hayledge n licks and close the whole thing down a bit, if only for the main fortnight or three weeks. On the occasion I have to do that running in a big open field I just think this is all wrong and feel so inefficient.

Tough when you lose them. Anyway to fence those fields and make the area smaller to control your ewes a little easier. They’ll then also have fresh grass to move on to

Do your ewes have access to magnesium? It helps with muscle function, you might not have to pull as many. We put out a mix of salt, lime and magnesium oxide down here (Oz). Good dog!

Time to get a lambing shed to improve your percentages. All this chasing about is giving man and beast a rough time. Any grants available for young entrants like yourself? You have a tough life in the wild west.

It's a balance. Inside lambing is much more productive but expensive on labour, feed, bedding etc. We do 3 lambings a year of around 600 each inside. They're penned individually after lambing and go outside generally after a few days after it's extremely intense and alot of work. This system is low input and far higher loss but it's cheap and easy by comparison.

I am not getting at you I am asking a question - when I was growing up on the farm we would pull lambs without gloves or lube - now there is a correlation between lambing without gloves and an increase of empty ewe's the following season as a foreign object was introduced (the hand) that has caused an infection increasing rates of infertility

Good video, I know the feeling. You need a ewe restrainer for holding the ewe in the fields, I used a bit of rope with a loop at both ends. About a foot long with the loops. Put loops on front legs and pull rope over their head. Can’t move too far with it. You can also get the aluminium ones but big to carry around in the field.

Put up a poly tunnel and put the sheep in for a short while before lambing and save a lot of running and dead lambs Keep it up

I had a similar thought - if the ewes were restricted to a smaller paddock just for lambing, you could monitor them without running them all over creation….❤️🐑

My Dad use to say if you don’t want to loose any don’t have any. His way of saying you have to expect losses. Don’t beat yourself up self up. Look at the ones you save.
