This outdoor storage bench is a very simple woodworking project!
Sponsored by www.wooditsreal...
We've got a pool, so we also have LOTs of pool noodles and other backyard stuff. In an effort to hide the pool supplies and toys away when not in use, I made this SUPER simple outdoor storage bench out of basic lumber from the home center. It's made to stay outside, house things that don't mind getting wet (like pool noodles) and can be built in an afternoon.
TOOLS LIST:
(some are better than the versions I own)
amzn.to/2axFPsA - Skil circular saw
amzn.to/2axOLvq - Dewalt 20v drill driver combo
amzn.to/2da9fOJ - Evolution miter saw
amzn.to/2akFubx - Orbital Sander
amzn.to/2axFRRs - Jigsaw
amzn.to/2axFGW9 - Speed square
amzn.to/2ayihkF - Quikclot clotting sponge
amzn.to/2aLCCCN - First aid kit
amzn.to/2aovz06 - Respirator
amzn.to/2aW3nHn - Filters
amzn.to/2aY182W - Eye protection
amzn.to/2axUZ0X - Ear protection

Yes, I am moving! This was built at our current home as a way to tidy up the backyard as we prepare it for sale. The bench will stay at this house.

List of quantities, sizes and dimensions pleeeease! You did mention in the video that you used 2x4x10' and the 1x4's were 12' and used the remaining 2' to cover the sides so I'm assuming the width is 2' but what about the height

in the picture in the beginning I counted 8 2 x4s, and I saw 11 1x 4s. You need 4 of the former, just for the frame, plus there were 12 of the smaller pieces, which would depend on the width and depth you want. The 1x4 s require at least 5 for the top and 10, for both sides, plus the ends so that is at least 16 or 17. Correct me if you see otherwise.

I could see the following for a cut list. take the cut list and plot it out to see the optimal lumber purchase. (6 pcs) 2x4x8 cut at roughly 18.75" (4 pcs) 2x4x10 (6 pcs) 2x4x8 cut at about 22" 1" overhang for feet (8 pcs) 1x4x12 cut at about 10' then remaining 2' for ends (4 pcs) 1x4x10 decking boards (6 pcs) 2x4x8 about 15" screws 2" screws 2 1/2"

I wonder why don't you ever add cushions to your benches? Or a backrest for that matter. It looks like a box you can sit on, not a bench with storage! Go to the flea market, get some cheap round cushions (clean them from fleas!) then use Velcro so they'll stay in place. Really easy and colorful!

Looks good Bob! the only thing I'd change is when laying the deck boards out is to have the exposed surface of the deck boards be the crown of the wood grain. For longevity, as the boards move around the pith, you want the board to take a crown shape instead of a cup shape. This prevents water from laying on the boards
@gregmfarmer

Hi there - I am new to DIY and wood work, is there an obvious way to tell which is the crown of the wood grain? Sounds like a great tip.

I followed your exact method for the frame but I think you’ve way over-engineered it! I used 70mm x 35mm x 3 metre lengths (2 3/4” x 1 3/8” x 10’) and the thing would withstand a thermonuclear attack! I’ve only made the frame so far and the cladding should add extra strength! Thanks for the upload 👍🏼😊

Great video Bob....so, are you taking this with you when you move?? I noticed you had "spacing" between the boards. If you butt them up tight, a space will be naturally created as the boards dry. I found this out with my deck. Just a thought for future builds. Scott

You probably figured this out already but cutting pressure-treated lumber near your pool is somewhat of a bad idea as it puts a lot of phosphates in your pool which you then have to remove via a chemicals-plus-vacuuming process - unnecessary time and money costs versus just cutting all of the lumber 40 or 50 feet away from your pool. Ask me how I know. :)

Can you imagine owning the house that Bob lived in? So many projects.... On any open days you have, you should have a monitor on display playing in a loop any videos you have of all the items/objects that are staying in the house. That way people can see how things were made and maintained. Maybe even make a custom cabinet just to house the monitor in... (of course include that in the video as well :p ) At the very least, you may even pick up a few more subscribers. :D

Hi Bob! I've heard you're moveing, so when you make the now workshop I think that would be a good time to show the tools you have, how to use them and what can you do with them, how useful/neccesare are them. Like: This is a router and you can make this and that with it, this is a circuilar saw, you can cut that, but if you want to do that, there is a better tool, etc. I'd like to see something like this, so I know what sould I buy, and what is "not that neccesary", or if I want to build something, at least I know what tool I need for that. I'm a beginner and didn't even know about for exmple the router, that tool is exists :D I like this channel, becuse you use proper tools, not that "I don't have a screwdriver" and "how to use a small dc motor as a drill" guys, but sometimes I just see, what is this?, what is that?, etc :D And thats a nice simple bench :)
