OUTER WILDS: Live From Timber Heart CD [Limited Run Games ‎2020] 

I just discovered this and I love how this version of Timber Hearth served as inspiration for Hearth Shadow from The Lost Reels

This game, this soundtrack got me. They came to me in the right time and I know that I will be having them with me all my life. I hope one day in my life I got able to listen them live.

You know, I always come back to this video, it is just so rich and a wonderful addition to Outer Wilds. After listening to it dozens of times, I've always thought about something with it and its themes. Every single familiar song in this album sounds completely different from its in-game version. Take Timber Hearth for example. In the game, its a lovely acoustic song that very much screams Hearthian. Its a warm song you would hear around a campfire with your friends. In this, it still has that comforting feeling, just, a lot lonelier, at least to me. Its no longer a campfire song, its a transcendental, serene track, that reminds you of what has been. Then you have End Times, which plays directly after. Again, it is a lot different from the one we are most familiar with. In-game, it is a song that reminds you that everything is ending, desolate, but at the same time, comforting. You know that when that plays, you'll just wake back up at the beginning of the loop. However, in the live version, all I hear is desolate, hopeless cries. Its an explosive track that symbolizes that everything has already ended, you're just here to remember. And again, what plays immediately after that, is Outer Wilds - Reprise. A little different from the official release, I don't have much to say about the differences between the two (other than what's added is really good) so I would like to talk about what story I interpret it is telling. To me, it is in the point of view of the aftermath of the end of the universe. Imagine the Hatchling, barely escaping from the solar system before it went supernova, the isolation they must have felt in that moment. Everything they have ever known was gone in a flash. This is what I imagine the soundtrack to that being. And that leads into what I want to talk about regarding this album, and all post-game Outer Wilds music released (at least that I have listened to). It is all music that comes from after the end. Be it immediately after, as with Outer Wilds - Reprise, or potential billions of years later, in the next universe, or whatever came after that (maybe even our own), as with many others, like the live versions seen here. Thinking about how other tracks like Castaways depict Nomai tragedies, and Elegy of the Rings and a lot of EotE tracks depicting dementia, or the Strangers forgetting they are dead, a major theme seen in them is fragmentation and time. Those tracks sound like a beat up record, damaged from being mistreated and exposed to the elements over years upon years. In the same way, it can be said that Hearthians and their music share the same fate; fragmenting over billions of years and through multiple universes, until it ended up in ours, transmitted over this amazing album.

I keep coming back to this album. It's so good. You have my eternal thanks for uploading it! My personal favorite is Reprise. The cello adds so much to the song...
