There's a lot of stuff I mightn't have really explained well ;-; (I'm still not great at script writing, this is just my 3rd attempt at a video essay) If you have any suggestions id appreciate it though!! I'm working on my next video right now :))
If you like the entire cult compound thing, together with some horror elements, there is a great game called "Sagebrush" that I would love to recommend. Although not for everyone because it has PSX graphics and what some people would call a walking simulator, the atmosphere of the game is phenomenal. The game is about exploring Black Sage Ranch, where the Perfect Heaven cult lived, until a mass (unaliving of themselves in RU-vid language), and listening to tapes from one of the cult members and her experience. It has a great effect when you listen to the tapes, where everything turns dark, and only a small light around the tape recorder is visible emphasizing what is being said, also pretty great voice acting for an indie. Another thing is the character you play as chose to get to the compound a little later than expected, and after a while you find that you are not only exploring a cult compound but also the sun is setting and darkness will soon envelop the ranch, and I don't know about you but I would not want to be there when it gets dark. Again great atmosphere, one of my favorite horror games, love the story, the atmosphere, the setting and the feeling it gives me very creepy, relying more on atmosphere rather than jumpscares.
On an extremely surface level perspective, sure they're similar. Buuuuuut, that's ignoring a lot. Outlast 2: You're a cameraman for a journalist investigating the mysterious death of a pregnant teen out in the Arizona wilderness. You inconsistently get transported to Blake's old school and learn about the events there, and if you look in areas you wouldn't think to look in, you find an extremely loose tie-in to the murkoff corporation being responsible for why everyone is crazy. There is very little that the cult itself is actually responsible for on their own volition. It is just another Murkoff Wallrider experiment. And also the sun explodes for absolutely zero reason and you get nothing afterwards so you have no earthly idea what happens after that. In fact, I'm fairly confident in saying that you know this since you just show the sun exploding and don't bother to talk about that at all. Because it's insane and makes no sense. Far Cry 5: Joseph foresees an event that he calls The Collapse and prepares for it by having bunkers built for his family, stocking up on food, weapons, ammo and other supplies and everyone knew they were around but ignored them. Until a whistleblower was trying to record evidence of worrying behavior to report to authorities and died from it. Ultimately, the Sheriff and deputies, assisting a U.S. Marshal, move in to arrest Joseph. His cult makes it difficult, helicopter crashes because cult members were climbing on it, and Joseph orders the Reaping to being. We played Far Cry 5 so we know how that goes, and at the end a nuke goes off. Very different from the sun exploding for no reason. It's suggested (don't remember if it's ever specifically said) that Joseph knew about the bomb and when it would go off, hence all of his planning. But not only is it a bomb and not the sun, but we also see what happens after. Joesph and you survive, and he brings you to Dutch's bunker and the two of you live through the fallout. The games are very different, the gameplay is very different, the stories are very different, the situations are very different. Once you start actually looking at these games, you see very quickly that they're not similar at all.
My argument was that they had similar story beats, but you are right in saying that there are a lot of differences. I believe I mentioned at the end that they are, in fact, different but I wanted to make a video pointing out the obvious similarities between them. I do know the Outlast lore from the comics and how Murkoff had those radio towers that emit light and cause hallucinations and phantom pregnancies. I admittedly don't know as much about the Farcry 5 lore but I played through it and knew about the game from a surface level, but I didn't really want to go too in depth into comic books and outside media and what not, only really giving brief explanations for a couple things from what I could find. I do agree, though. They are quite different in a lot of other ways and perhaps I didn't explain that well enough in the video.
@@Firecraicr You don't have to go into comics and outside media. Everything you need is in-game. I mean, everything that I know about both is stuff I gathered just from the game.
@@bowiehunterI see what he’s talking about. It’s a completely different story based upon what could be from 1 story prompt. What I mean is that, the conflict and plot is similar, both are crazy or cultist in the game, the protagonist is conflicting with them, and there is a need to put a stop to it, or find the mystery they’re covering. So similar ideas gone into a totally different story and setting
Thats an interesting take!! I can understand why youd find Farcry 5 boring bc its pretty much been the same since 3 😭 i thought Outlast 2 was really good though honestly
