Almost every single person that gets in my EV tries to claim that batteries only last 8 years or 100,000miles. They don’t understand the concept of the battery still having 80% of it’s capacity. It’s much more effective to say, “After 100,000 miles, battery capacity will degrade up to 20%. For example, a 239mile range EV may instead have 191miles after 100,000miles.” Though many Tesla drivers have reported as little as 5% degradation after 100,000 miles in 3 years due to a young lifespan. If you’re worried about going electric for a high mileage vehicle, the quicker you use those miles, the longer the battery will last.

These more durable batteries will put a stop to steep EV depreciation on BEVs equipped with them. 16 plus years of longevity is as good, if not better, as 70% of ICE out there. My ICEV and HEV are 14 and 13 y.o. and still quite reliable but a BEV with batteries lasting this long is a no-brainer purchase for me down the road.

Are CATL actually offering a 16 year, 2 million km warranty on some of their batteries? Which batteries in particular?
@thedarksideofevan4690
@thedarksideofevan4690 2 месяца назад
It depends on the automakers. Some of them provide first-hand car owners battery warranties for all lifetime, with batteries of CATL(Qilin & Shenxing) or BYD(Blade).

I wonder whether in the future, car manufacturers will be permitted to tout these longer lasting batteries or whether battery manufacturers will identify which vehicles got these longer-lasting batteries. Maybe that information will be part of the Battery Passports?

As far as i know your current gen LFPs have 8 years or 800,000 km warranty,i think your 16 years and 2 million km warranty claimed is for your new zero degradation technology battery cells which will be released later 2024 not your current cells,We need 400wh/kg condensed zero degradation LFPs and 500 wh/kg condensed zero degradation NCM cells to make evs and hybrids real practical,please make that happen

8 years warranty doesn't mean the battery will last 8 years. ICE vehicles have less than 8 years of warranty but we don't expect the engine to just stop working when the warranty expires.
@davidfujkk8018

No CATL current cells have 8 years healthy life time warranty,CATL it self is not happy with current batteries healthy life time which is not that impressive and will cause waste of too much resources ,efforts and time to replace the batteries for a brand new one; that is why they(CATL) just interduced "zero degradation technology" 2 month ago,which will provide zero deg rate for battery's first 1000 cycles or 6 years of life time,which is mind blowing,i think these 16 years and 2 million km warranty claim is for their next gen battery cells which will be interduced this year with "zero deg tech" use in developing them,they already use this new tech in their TENER energy storage systems which has LFP chemistry and zero degradation tech as i mentioned,16 years and 2 million km warranty is only achievable with this new zero deg technology

@Legate_Lanius ice vechiles... we expect a part to fail within the warranty for a good percentage of cases and need replacement of part. Then a full rebuild ect after 3 / 400 000 ks if your verry lucky.

LOL how many cars drive beyond 500 000 miles, that is 25 years of normal driving. In general most cars are already worn out at this stage.

Do LFP batteries have a longer calendar life than NCM batteries due to their lower operating voltage? If so, how much longer is LFP calender life than ternary battery life?
@toddw3nzel639
@toddw3nzel639 2 месяца назад
Yes majority of the time LFP has a longer calendar life than NCM.
@delusion2987
@delusion2987 2 месяца назад
CATL LFP model 3 has 4-5% degradation at 50k miles. NCM has 6.5% degradation at 50k miles. something to note is that LFP plateaus gently after the first 50k miles while NCM Panasonic (fremont long range) deteriorates to 9.5% at 100k miles. NCM LG (shanghai long range) does not seem to deteriorate as much as Panasonic. so there is a difference between LFP and NCM but it is not big compared to the LG NCM pack.

It is correct that LFP batteries generally have a longer calendar life.✔ However, NCM batteries typically experience a lower throughput during regular use, which can effectively extend their cycling life.😁

Lease your next EV than you don’t have to worry about battery life, and you won’t be stuck with old technology.

It's a good idea but you still need the batteries to be good, otherwise the residual value drops and you have to pay for that difference in the cost of the lease..

If you don't charge to max, or use plenty of overprovisioning and don't go into low discharge your electric car battery will probably outlive you.
@danielvilliers612
@danielvilliers612 2 месяца назад
LFP batteries can be charged and discharged completely. With 3000 cycles above 80%, you would be about 1 500 000 KM.
@philipp594
@philipp594 2 месяца назад
@@danielvilliers612 but you would be stuck everywhere, when you discharge to 0 and overprovisioning is still helpful for LFP. Maybe your car manufacturer will do it for you, so you don't have to think about it. Battery pack failures are cascading. So just because it should last 1500000 Km doesn't mean it will. And a pack with 40- 60% usable capacity is barely useable in a car anymore, so I would say it's worth it to preserve the higher max charge and max current capability.

they have videos on puncture resistance, also, so many Evs now have been in catastrophic accidents and have had no issues with battery fires. unlike a tank of petrol of diesel which are renowned for being ruptured in big accidents, and exploding incinerating passengers.

What happens after 8 years? Why is CATL not promoting its swappable batteries like NIO? If after 8 years only 50% to 75% of the battery remains, the EV is not as useful as before. The average age of cars in the US is 12.6 years, why waste 7 years or more of useful EV life. Electronics have a useful life of 20 years or more and most reputable inverters carry a 20 year warranty, EV can have useful life of 20 years, motors have a useful life of 15 years but can also be swapped. Swappable batteries ease the development cycle for car companies.

50% after 8 years would be covered by warranty. Most car makers garanty at least 70% after 8 years.

Swappable batteries are a bad idea for passenger vehicles and may be good only for specific use cases. It makes the car heavier, and having hundreds of swapping stations brimmed with battery packs sitting there doing nothing is a huge capital cost.

The high performance cars like Porsche Taycan are 240 to 460 kW power, so they must have a battery with at least that power. Those batteries are about 80 kWh energy.
@theagentsmith

Li-Ion cells can withstand discharge of 10C or even more (but with more losses). At 80kWh battery pack at 10C discharge would provide 800kW of power, in already existing cars like Model S Plaid or Lucid Air.
