With Profar back, I think Azocar will be the everyday CF, with Profar taking some of the workload. Maybe getting Soler or Duvall to bring back a portion of the Soto offense with Duvall potentially playing CF also.
Tough to see the Padres like this when they looked so promising during that NLCS run in '22, but I have a tough time seeing the vision for them this year other than fighting for a final Wild Card spot. I acknowledge that they had a super skewed one-run game record last season where if flipped, they'd been a 90+ win team. However, their rotation looks super dodgy now with Snell, Lugo, and Wacha all gone to Free Agency. A top 3 of Musgrove, Darvish, and King is definitely solid, but the back end of that rotation has a lot to prove. The bottom of the order doesn't really look too threatening. Though as they said, there is definitely potential for Bogaerts, Machado, and Cronenworth to play much better than they did in 2023. Plus, if Tatis returns to his previous form where he can be a guy that hits 40 bombs, it can offset the loss of Soto single handedly alongside his fantastic defense. Also think Campusano is pretty underrated as he hit very well in the games he played last season.
I completely agree they made the worst possible trade decisions ever since Peter died management took full advantage of the situation. Peter would've never allowed it.
Great post, man. One thing to keep in mind, our amazing 2022 season was without Bogaerts, Tatis and Soto (who largely stunk until we got in the playoffs). What that team had was Manny being Manny, and guys like Alfaro and Camarena stepping up and winning us games in the clutch. Which ties into the 2-12 showing in extras last year - we had no Alfaro types stepping up. We still got the potential as long as we have an MVP type season from one of our Big 3, or get All Star seasons out of a couple of them perhaps. Tatis will put up some MVP-like seasons, will it be this year now that he's back fully? Hope so!
@@Refr619 The only major trade they've done this offseason was the Soto trade and while it definitely makes your team worse to trade him, I'd say they were sort of forced to. The Padres were reported to have taken a 50M loan in September leading to the belief the planned to cut payroll in the off-season. Soto made 31M in arbitration and was going to Free Agency after the 2024 season as he is a Scott Boras client. So I completely understand moving him when your other big 3(Machado, Tatis, Bogaerts) are signed long-term, but while the return they got for him was good, it does feel like a trade that is more focused on the long term as Drew Thorpe was one of the headliners of the trade and he just reached AA in 2023. But yeah, in previous seasons, it felt like they were making the flashy acquisitions/signings, and now they're on the opposite end of trading said talent away or letting them walk in Free Agency.
@@rayfinkle9369 That is very true. Even Josh Bell in 2022 struggled when coming to San Diego in that Soto trade after having a stellar 1st half with the Nationals. I definitely think their offense will step it up in those one-run games and we will see a much improved Machado and Tatis which will completely offset Soto's lost production. The tough part is guessing if this projected boost in offense production will be enough to offset the losses in pitching. The Padres had the #1 rotation in 2023 if we go by ERA. While I do like Musgrove, Darvish, and King, I don't think that they will headline a Top 5 rotation in the league. Also have to factor in that their division has improved this off-season as well with the Dodgers billion dollar off-season, and the Dbacks and Giants making medium level signings. But I also agree that I would love to see Tatis return to that 2021 form. Hoping this season for Tatis is a calm before the storm like Acuna's 2022 to 2023.
@@454fire it doesn't matter I already read the article of that being the case with the loan but Peter was hell bent on having a winning team that's what he wanted more than anything before he passed away he said "we'll be fine" I trusted him he knew exactly what he was doing. A.J. preller on the other hand has no fuckin clue how to run this management. He needs to go. Like I said I work at Petco Park Im at ever single home game I watch them play. Our team was great what was lacking is a team group effort. Soto said it himself last season that the guys would give up sometimes. That's a lack of cohesion. What they have a problem with is everyone want to hit a be a solo home run. When instead they need to work as a team & load the fuckin bases & then go for the homers. The only people that came to play baseball last season was Soto & Kim. Every game they came out & gave their all. You can tell it's visible. The other were kinda like meandering around. That's the real issue with the team. We have a championship winning team well we had one now not so much I don't have any faith in these horrendous trade offers we got. They even got rid of our catcher who clutched games for us. Line bro how much of a slap in the face is that?. The need to sign & extended Campusano they needed to keep Sanchez. We need Soto & Kim.
@@VitalityMassage FACTS MATTER. “One of the biggest disappointments in sports history” ?? Like the 2022 dodgers historic 107 winning season (best in franchise history) to be wiped out by the Padres wasn’t a disappointment, right ? And then the dodgers failed AGAIN in 2023 the same way! You want to talk about disappointments in HISTORY? 🤡
@@OGTirpleOG and your excuse for waiting til the final week to finally hit above .500 since May 12th is suppose to change my response? 😂 pathetic is an understatement
This year is actually better than last. Why. 1st: They don't have a sick owner and a bad head coach. (If only AJ were also gone!) 2nd: They can redeem their HORRIBLE effort from last year by actually working hard this year. (From the very beginning it was easy to see how bad they were in spring training. They assumed that they were going to be able to destroy other teams. So comical. We'll see if they learned their lesson!) 3rd: Maybe they'll stop celebrating in the dugout and get serious about playing decent baseball! Snell is gone. This might help. Less Polaroids!
we want PADRES to Fired The PADRES General Manager AJ Preller Now He suck and can’t win For Padres in 2023 Get rid of him Now I want PADRES to sign and Hire JAKE PEAVY a want to be a New General Manager of PADRES to replace him AJ Preller
GREAT idea. Preller does NOT know how to rally a team. He's a loser. So was Bob! Unfortunately, the previous sick with cancer owner kept Preller on. Therefore, the team is going to have to get it's sh-- together all on it's own.
Fair evaluation. Padres probably aren't going to be as bad as many might think. But until we actually see the players from the Yankees in the Soto trade perform, it's a big guess how much the Padres got back for giving up a proven, generational talent in Soto. Consider that Soto was the only slugger in the Padres lineup in 2023 that performed close to expectations from opening day to the final day of the regular season... In a lineup that was packed with sluggers 1-7 (approximately). It was that bad for the team as a whole yet in that environment Soto still delivered. To say that the Padres might have gotten 3/5 of their rotation in the trade is really stretching expectations. Only one is penciled in for the rotation at the start of the season, another might be called up second half of the season and any others likely won't see the big leagues until 2025 at earliest. Toss in a backup catcher that the former Yankees are very familiar with, and it's very unlikely that the Padres are going to be getting comparable value for Soto in 2024. Maybe it'll look better when hopefully at least 2 pitchers might make the majors and contribute but in the immediate term, it's only Michael King and filling in holes and some promise for Soto. Yankees should be happy with their deal... for now. And Preller did a good job considering how well known it was that the Padres were in a financial predicament.
It's nice to dream, but that would be absolute legit. 4 potential MVP bats in a row. Not gonna happen, but who knows - Preller has been known to go ham before.
Profar is valuable for team chemistry. He was a main contrinutor 2 seasons ago when everyone else was slumping. When he came back from the Rockies last season, the Padres started playing better as a team. The got rid of Grish because of his weak bat. We will feel his loss on defense, but maybe a tradeoff with more offense will be worth it.
@@VitalityMassage your not going to miss his low era?? Sure hell of a lot of walks, but he pitched himself out of those jams or else that era would be through the roooof!
@@VitalityMassage yeah it's not just him is also Montgomery Snell, Chapman, bellinger alot of great free agents still out there. The Yamamoto deal broke the free agent market in my opinion, it slowed down a lot...
@@gabrielv.2647 In the beginning of last year, on my Padres channel, I made a video entitled, "How Snell Can Not Smell." He started out horrible... just like the previous year. This is one of the reasons why he's not able to command what he's asking. Inconsistency.
