Outra Vez - Bossa Nova Guitar Lesson #21: Ghost Notes

This transcription is based on the several recordings by João Gilberto, the first one with vocals by Elizeth Cardoso and released on Canção de Amor Demais, the second one he also sang and released on album O Amor, o Sorriso e a Flor and finally on the version that João Gilberto performed live in the famous Carnegie Hall concert in November 1962. Finally some minor changes were made based on Jobim's own instrumental recording from his album A Certain Mr. Jobim.
The lesson shows the usage of ghost notes in playing bossa nova rhythms. In bossa nova those are typically played on the last beat of the measure in the anticipation of a chord change. Everything is performed as if the chord change is about to happen on that last beat except that the strings are not pressed against the fretboard, but just lightly touched, as if the intention is to mute them. The pressure needs to be firm enough to prevent the sound of the open strings, still light enough so they don't even come close to the frets.
Few things to note about guitar accompaniment:
1. The first studio recording was played in B, while the second was either played in C or it was pitched up one semitone. Since the live version was also played in B we have chosen B for this lesson. Jobim's instrumental version was played in D.
2. The tempo of these recordings also varies significantly, from 75 in live version, 85 in João Gilberto's studio recording and the same tempo was also used by Jobim, while in the first recording with Elizeth Cardoso they played at 100 bpm. We set the tempo somewhere in the middle, that is 80 bpm.
Enjoy playing Outra Vez!

Cara, excelente! I'm a brazilian and I play guitar but you're perfect, rigth? Keep going.

I’m sure you’ve been asked these questions before but I have three questions. What kind of guitar do you play? Are these nylon or metal strings? And what does this guitar sound like with classical music like Bach and Tarrega? The tone of this gorgeous guitar is unlike usual classical guitars. It’s bright yet not high and does not have a “plastic” sound like nylon strings tend to have.

Yairi CY140, made by Japanese luthier Kazuo Yairi and sold by an American company called Alvarez. This is a remarkable instrument built with very high precision and attention to details. Strings are a combination of nylon and carbon, I usually use E1 nylon while B2 and G3 are carbon strings. Basses are of course nylon. Carbon strings make brighter tone but E1 is a bit too bright for my taste so I put nylon there. Currently carbons are Savarez, but I also use Hannabach carbon strings. I plan to make a section on instrumental pieces so you'll be able to hear that as well. In my opinion it's not much different from what you've already described: rich in bass and bright in trebles. Thanks for your input.

Thank you so much for your reply! When I found your channel I was blown away with how helpful they are and the quality of them. I've learned quite a few of Joao's songs all with your help. I definitely appreciate your feedback. Please continue to make these incredible videos; I'll be watching.

@@bossanovaguitar Thank you for the input on nylon strings. I like Hannabach and Savarez too. I'm more used to steel strings so choosing strings for my nylon is a bit tricky. Strings are the most important part of the guitar. Yairi is one of the best guitar makers in Japan, and in the world. Your guitar fits perfectly to bossa nova.

I have a question, is your guitar's action high or is it low because I have mainly seen classical guitars with higher action while my classical guitar has substantially lower action. Does the action being higher or lower serve a purpose or is it just preference/design?
@bossanovaguitar
@bossanovaguitar 6 лет назад
With higher action you can produce more volume without fret buzz, but you also get the same effect with higher string tension. Both make a guitar more difficult to play. There is however another buzz associated with higher string tension, the one that is created when you mute the strings by lifting your fingers off the fretboard. That one can be partially eliminated by fretting the string closer to the fret, but this is sometimes impractical or even impossible. So you need to find a balance between those factors that will create acceptable sound for your playing style. Most important in my opinion is that you feel comfortable with your setup and that playing doesn't generate unnecessary stress for your body. The song from here is played on middle tension strings. Sometimes I use high tension, but not for a longer period. The action is middle to low at present. Thanks for your input.

So subtle, but the fingerpicking at 1:30 is tough to get used to with the index finger hitting the 5th string
@bossanovaguitar
@bossanovaguitar 4 года назад
Yes, that seems to be Joao's favorite voicing of Emaj7 in the early days. You may also play it as 0x214x with no big difference in sound. Thanks for your input.

Hi, thanks for Video. For me it seems to be a half tone to low over the whole piece. For my thelve I transposed it a half tone higher. Now it fits the recording of Joao Gilberto.
@bossanovaguitar
@bossanovaguitar 4 года назад
You may easily do that with a capo if you want. I think João played it in B as there is Emaj7 chord (02x14x) there, that he often used, which would be quite impractical, if not impossible, in C. Thanks for your input.

And changing times in Brasil But its spark is essential, it will never ever go away An acoustic guitar, a clave, a dancer a picnic table you give us weapons to do that

Your hand or your fingertips? If it's your hand then you need to interleave practice with rest/relax intervals. If it's in your fingertips then just keep playing and it will disappear Thanks for your post.
