Outrun 2 - XBOX Review 

this game should be ported to every console, every generation, I miss it so much

It's 2020 and this game still looks and sounds fantastic!

This game is nothing but a celebration of what I consider to be video games. Out Run 2 is without a doubt one of, if not the best arcade racers ever made and for me, it'll be that evergreen game that I'll keep going back to for the rest of my life. In my mind it's perfection.

Never knew Yu Suzuki was involved in making Out Run2! I had the honor of meeting him in person at a Sega Developers conference and he was gracious enough to take a picture with a young unknown game developer newbie at the time. He didn't seem so popular with his subordinates however, which didn't surprise me knowing how perfectionist he is.

Suzuki Yū is also my idol. He is such a legend in the video game industry.

Find even one person who doesn't love this game. Impossible.

I think theres a bit of bad blood between Yu Suzuki and Sega Japan, his final six years at the company, he went a bit Hideo Kojima and spent millions on projects that were cancelled or failed in test markets. His only "good" game at the end was Sega Race TV, which Sega pretend never existed, despite being a pretty fun game.

The PC version of OutRun 2006 C2C has a file that enables bloom and lens flare placed in the wrong directory. To fix: 1) Go to "\Media\". 2) Copy "lens_flare_offset.bin". 3) Paste in "\Common\". Also, there is a community mod called Outrun 2 FXT that fixes some of the problems with the PC version. (The PC version runs great for me, fwiw, though I've only tested it on my Windows 7 installation.)

Outrun 2 has the original arcade game as an unlockable bonus game.

I love late '90s, early 2000s CG girls ^_^ So nostalgic.

I remember playing Outrun 2 on Xbox at E3! I placed my preorder at Game stop and still have it in my collection, great game.

I spent an obscene amount of quarters at the arcade, and this game was probably half of it.

Outrun 2 screams Arcade racer perfection. I played this to death, back in the day.

I still remember the first time I saw OR2 in a movie theater arcade in January 2004 and it blew me away. I remember reading that a proper sequel was in the works a year or two before, so I was subconsciously awaiting the game to come out. Quickly learning of its arcade hardware and already owning an original Xbox, I was very excited to get my hands on the console release when it first came out.

I have the original OutRun2 for the OG Xbox (even though I don't have one anymore -- yet), but I've been playing OutRun Online Arcade on the jailbroken PS3. What a freaking awesome game.

I have outrun 2 running on teknoparrot emulator for my racing cabinet in my man cave. It is the most played of all the racing games I have on that pc. The game is just so damn fun with a wheel/pedal with force feed back.

I have this on PC, it was called Outrun 2006 Coast 2 Coast. Excellent game, still play it from time to time.

OutRun 2 and OutRun 2006 badly need a remaster on current consoles and PC. Neither of these games are even backwards compatible on the Xbox One or Series X. Though they were on the 360.

The best memory I have of this game was at a field trip to a bowling alley, when I finally made it to the finish line with a AA rank in Heart Attack mode. If I remember correctly there was a whole crowd of other kids behind me watching, as no one ever crossed the finish line. I walked out of that arcade room with my head held high, feeling like the king of the road. I almost didn't want to go back to bowling!

This game was the star in one of my city's last arcade places. It had the full cabinet version for single player at it became so popular that the owners also adquired the two player version. I only could play twice because it was always occupied. It was late but Sega finally included extra content in an arcade conversion.

Ironic they had AMD product placement, since the CPU and GPU were Intel and Nvidia respectively.

I recently played the original Outrun 2 at my local arcade. Playing this game on original hardware is captivating. For 5 minutes you are completely focused on outrunning the clock, and getting to the finish line. Nothing else exists. SEGA truly put out some of the best arcade games ever made.

They need to figure out this Ferrari license situation this game would be brilliant on the switch.

Utterly timeless. Looked stunning when released and still puts newer games on hugely more powerful systems to shame 👍.

I got to play OutRun 2 SP back in the day and it was definitely one of the best video game experiences I've ever had. The drift mechanics were so fluid and the sense of speed immense. Soon after that I had OutRun 2006 for my PS2 and while it didn't have the sturdy arcade controls and speakers behind your ears, it was a very nice port considering it was originally designed with Xbox in mind. Getting the licence for a re-release could be tricky, I think. Since the original games seemed to be treated as a bit like advertisements for Ferrari, I would suspect they would want their newer models in the new release.

Man my kids loved this on the OG XBOX and when we got SP...it became a family game lol

I own the Xbox Original Outrun 2 and the PSP Outrun 2 Coast to Coast. Both are great games. I regret not getting the Xbox 360 online version when I had the chance. Outrun has a special place in my heart. I remember playing the original arcade Outrun as a young teen, a few years before I got my driver's license.

This is probably my most played racing game over the years, and the PSP version is still top shelf even today. I run it on my Vita in current times for proper analog controls, as that nub on the PSP sucked major donkey balls. LOL I was just playing this yesterday afternoon as a matter of fact, as it's one of the best playing racing games of all time, and hands down one of the best looking.

My favorite arcade racer of all time. Spent over 500 credits (I was so obsessed with the game I actually kept account! Time Attack never felt more right than in this game, and I absolutely loved time attacking Daytona USA and Scud Race for sure, too!) on it in a nearby arcade and bought a steering wheel for the OG Xbox just for this and was ripping up the leaderboards for a while. Good times. Good times indeed.

One of the greatest arcade games ever made became one of if not, the best console racing/driving game of all-time. It is a top 10 game for me no matter what iteration or on what platform you choose to play it.

Truly a fantastic game. Sometimes I go to the arcade just to play a few rounds of it, even though I have Coast 2 Coast installed on every PC I've owned since 2009.

I never played this but I absolutely LOVED the Xbox Arcade Version. That and the Afterburner games they came out with for the 360 were just pure fun, what Sega always did best.

I like how most of the billboards are Scuderia Ferrari F1 sponsors in 2004 (Shell, AMD, Bridgestone, Vodafone). I'm sure that was part of the Ferrari license.

As an original Xbox owner, I'm glad Sega focused on that console for some time. Shenmue 2, Jet Set Radio, Outrun 2 and other great games. I loved all of them

Ferrari should let Sega rerelease these games, as its free promotion. I dont think Fast and The Furious would of been made or at least wouldnt of been as popular if it wasnt for Gran Turismo introducing North America and Europe to all the Pacific Muscle cars that were featured in that movie. Im talking the Supra, Skyline GTR, 300z, Rx-7 and the almighty 3000GT VR-4. Lots of people around my age (older millennials) will tell you thats how they found out about many of these cars. Im just saying that having real car models in games will pay off. I know it wont be the same rereleasing a 20 year old game as it was with the blockbuster title that the first 2 Gran Turismos were, but still.

I love the PC version of OutRun 2006 C2C! Runs in 4k and looks amazing! Works great with Xbox Series X controller too!

One of my favorite Xbox games. It was the right successor to the original. Playing this through a Pound HDMI cable, then through an mClassic makes this game looks like it could have been an Xbox 360 game.

i had the same story as u Sega lord, but it was with Outrun in the arcade.....Outrun 2 i tried at a friend's house but didn't really like it, then outrun coast to coast or maybe 2006 came out on ps2, and i found it for cheap, took it home, sat on my chair, plugged in my new Yamaha headphones and played it, i was mesmerized for hours, it was the most insane rush i ever had ,

Outrun 2 and 2006 servers have been revived on the OG Xbox !!

Oh, I guess we're around the same age. But I didn't have a local arcade in 1985 so my first Hang-On and OutRun experiences were on the Sega Master System. It used to be that the XBox version of OutRun 2 was virtually unplayable on the XBox 360 in Backwards Compatibility mode due to a glitch where the skidding audio continued looping even if you started a new game but I finally downloaded an updated version of the backwards compatibility patch a couple of months ago and was relieved to find that the issue that was causing the glitch had been resolved since the last time I tried playing OutRun 2 on the XBox 360 several years before.

I used to play this on my projector in 2006 but was convinced in my memory that it was a 360 game which I know I played on there too, like GoW! Completely forgot that this was on the OG X Box!

Outrun 2 just gets better with age - found it on my PSP after many years of it gathering dust, it’s simply superb and FUN something so often overlooked in modern game design now

I knew about Outrun 2 and Outrun 2006, but never got to play them until recently, and damn are they good games! I don't care if I can't play the games in HD, they still look great, and makes it worth going back to the old consoles for.

great video. i have Outrun 2 on xbox and play it on a 360. have you played the other sumo digital racing games like the Sega All-Stars racing series. i feel like they built off the outrun 2 engine and they feel really nice to play. i know it's no replacement for outrun but at least there were a few games in that series

Damn, I didn't know there was a 360 version available. I missed out on that. But, I do have several modded Xbox systems with full libraries on them. My friends and I usually just system link Halo and other FPS's. This game is going to be played in our next session. They just don't know it yet.

Outrun 2 is timeless. It was great when it came out, it's great today and it will be great decades from now.

I loved playing this game online back in the day. It was awesome in the arcades too. I have it on PC now at least. Such a great game and a sequel that does the original proper justice, which is rare.

This was my favourite arcade style racing game of all time on console. Well it’s a tie between the SATURN port of SEGA RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP & Outrun 2. I wish I hadn’t sold my OG X Box version of this game for peanuts a few years back. I’m going to have to buy another copy sometime soon.

There is still an "Xbox Live" for the OG Xbox, but like the Dreamcast, you have to go through some networking hoops in order to access it from a private server. At least that's what I recall.

Definitely a timeless classic just like the original. I hope to setup a home arcade cab one day dedicated for this game.

Man I miss Sega of the 80's, and 90's. They were unbeatable when it came to technology and innovation, then the PlayStation ruined everything! Till this day, I've never owned a PlayStation, and never will. But when this game was an Xbox exclusive, not only was I happy, the PlayStation 2 couldn't compete with the capabilities of the Xbox.

This game would be perfect for the hardware to show off 120 fps and all that power on the new consoles, it would be so beautiful and perfect fit as a launch game.

Man... I usually don't comment on RU-vid videos, but this one..... This one got right through me. Everything you said in the last part got me to tear up a bit because it's so true!! I've been saying that for years, I just don't understand why SEGA (and other companies) don't use their full library of IP's. Sucks to be a SEGA fan. Anyway, I absolutely love Outrun and have bought every single game I can think of. I've even played Outrun 2 on Xbox a couple of days back. Good video. From a SEGA fan to another.

Best racing game ever made (the Coast2Coast version).

If this game looks good to you, the PC version of Outrun 2 Coast 2 Coast is now available as a small abandonware download, including a version packed with the latest FXT mod, which fixes many bugs, adds modern quality of life improvements and makes it run great in Windows 10. What surprised me the most of is what it supports ultra-wide resolutions, with only the UI elements getting stretched. Looks great on my UW display in 1440p. The XBox One pad support is also great with the FXT, including the rumble feature. FXT even allows to you to race friends over the Internet! What's really interesting is that while this game is very old and uses so little graphics capabilities of my GPU that its temperature never rises or its fans spin up when I play it, Outrun C2C still manages to look very attractive. It's one of of those rare polygon 3D games which achieves that "timeless" look thanks to the great art design and some clever graphics resource distribution. The car, the road and the immediate road-side stuff all have high polygon counts and the kind of high-res textures that you rarely saw during the era of 6th generation consoles, while the kind of stuff that you won't be noticing in detail while power-sliding at 200 mph, ranges from low poly models with blurry textures, to simple spites (like the crowds of people watching the race). You really don't notice the low poly/texture and sprite-based stuff while racing, so overall, things end up looking very nice. I suppose that a lot racers and fighting game from that era do the same stuff (tightly focus the graphics resource use on the assets that you'll be looking at the most), making them hold up better than most other types of games from the era, but this game does it particularly well, in combination with it's vibrant color use and good art design.

There is a really great interview with the coders somewhere on the net. Could not dig it out, if I find it will send it along. It was a big challenge to convert this from arcade due to the much smaller memory compared to the arcade machine. A US team did the conversion. The Japanese team oversaw it and of course were demanding and big on details, burning the midnight oil. I used to work as a coder myself in that era on PS1. The game itself takes a predictable path so that helps the performance. The interview was really fascinating, would love to have you make a video all about it and even try and contact some of the coders and interview them yourself. It would be a great story!

I watched this video with a happy smile on my face. We all loved this game. I remember a stage where I was going up a hill. I took the car completely sideways and was passing traffic with it. Perfect arcade fun. I haven't turned on my OG Crystal Xbox for about a decade. I doubt it still works, but I might have to take a look....

Outrun 2 is still a visual treat by today standards, yeah, the only thing is the aliasing, but this thing wasn´t meant for running in an HD tvs

Awesome game! I have 2 system-linked Xboxes, 2 copies of Outrun2 and 2 wheels/pedals. Even though it's only 480p, 720p TVs are so cheap now, so I'm picking up 2 matching ones soon. This still looks great in 480p, so I don't mind that there's no modern port.

I still own the PC version and while I'm not a big racing games fan I give this one a go every once in a while. With maxed out anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering you get a perfect image quality (and don't forget to use the fixes for the missing visual effects).

I play that often on my Nvidia Shield, running PPSSPP upscaled to 4x resolution, it looks real nice.

Used to play this at my local arcade, Outrun 2 will remain one of the greatest if not the greatest driving game of all time. Shame that Sega isn’t like this anymore.

I recently ended up getting the PC version up and going and it's glorious. I just wish it was the Steam version but I missed the boat there, but still, there are ways to acquire this quite easily and get it working....

I bought the Xbox version for £8 in CeX just after it was delisted digitally, and I've backed it up to my PC to emulate in 1440P 60fps to play it in all its glory. Outrun deserves the best, arguably in my top 5 games of all time.

Awesome breakdown dude. If Microsoft every goes back to adding more backwards compatible games (which I really hope they do), this HAS to be on the list!!! Well, this and Jet Set Radio Future.
