I was 16 in 2004 when I got my license in NYC. This shit was going on at that time as much as it is now. Now its just that there's social media and dash cams so its all over IG. Nothings changed. I stopped doing it as much now that I'm older.
I’m in my 30’ and can attest that what he’s saying is 1000% true. Most car guys in Brooklyn/NY start driving like this from their teens. My friends and I been cutting up since ~2008. Like he said, only difference is he makes the videos and edits them. But best believe this type of driving has been going on for decades especially on the belt. I used to work for a doctor who told me stories of him having a girlfriend In like Babylon and he used to tear up the belt in his 911 back in the day. I gotta say it was a lot less cops back then.
Genuinely would like to cut up in traffic more, got a little 135i staggered setup, but im more worried about the drivers around me, than me actually doing something stupid, like fr if you come to cali you better remember that defensive driving shit 🤣 people over here drive as if they got 9 lives (pullin out into oncoming traffic goin like 15, no blinker, straight up run you off the road, dont check mirrors ong), and don't even get me started on the Tesla drivers 😪
Bro I was driving an Altima SR and 3 bmws and a VW golf get behind me. That’s code for start it up in nyc. Next thing ik we’re on the grand central going 110 in and out of cars like it’s a convoy😅
@@siphious2911 u can still cut up without doing what these guys do. The way they cut up is stupid but tuff at the same time cuz they have rlly good driving skills
Young bro..we used to catch rec in the 90s when racing was racing..the streets were clear on the belt parkway to the southern state at night..nowadays its alot harder to speed because it's way too many cars on the road..we didnt do all this weaving in and out of traffic..we had clear roads at 2am..the roads would start to clear out around 10pm..people actually went to sleep..lol..back in 1995 I had the Acura legend coupe with the type 2 engine and the 1993 lexus SC400..my boy had the 1992 Q45 infiniti(the Q45 was a problem back then).you had to be there to see it young bro..also back in the late 70s 80s and 90s they used to race on fountain Ave in Brooklyn East NY..all of it was kept quiet and underground..lol..we didn't want to advertise or tell on ourselves like the newer generation when they post stuff on social media..to this day I still love speed so I stay with my Scat packs & my hellcat challenger..im older and respect the roads now..plus I don't want to crash my car or cause a major accident weaving in and out of traffic for just likes..
@@josh1234567892 the other day i spotted a corolla doing 40 in a 60-70 zone in the second to left lane and everyone were just going around it. I had to process that situation for a bit
@Samuel Rodriguez it's crazy just how many unaware drivers there is. 5 car can go around them and they will still go 40 mph or stay in the lane like they're not watching all these cars coming close behind and going around. If you know you're just cruising , stay on the right side. I speed but when I'm not , I always let the faster traffic flow by.
I don't think you understand how iconic of an interview this is. This is going to blow up and gain millions of views in the coming months/years. It's truly a pleasure to finally be able to hear a little bit of these guys' background. I've been watching 981 for a couple years now and I have always been curious to know more about him. With that being said, please everyone remember that life is not a game. There are heavy consequences to clout chasing and trying to become a 981 copycat. You heard from him yourself, they acknowledge that they're putting people's lives in danger. Consume his content for entertainment purposes and take it at face value. There is no need to ruin your life and the lives of other innocent people for the little bit of adrenaline that you get. Stay safe swimmers 💯
@@kingfreddy5268 Unfortunately that's how it usually goes. 981 seems smart enough to recognize that tho. Hopefully he gives it up before it's too late.
I've been watching wheres981 since he uploaded his first "Every time I ran from the cops" compilation. The guy gets me on the edge of my seat yipping and giggling like a little girl with some of the things he does. I also love how he redefined the word "swimming" or "swim." He really makes it look as easy as having fun in a pool. I've started using that word in that context myself.
I hope 981 and 8x, and the whole swim team, know that they've started and influenced the new generation of the American street scene and that swimming is gonna be something in the scene for decades to come
This man made some valid points. At the end of the day if people actually used the road properly we wouldn't need to be weaving, we would just stay in the left lane out of everyone's way
@@r.d.9399 there’s really no way to prove it. Even if he gets caught running from the police, all his videos won’t harm him much. Especially with a good lawyer, that won’t really stick. It’s very hard to prove a case like that from a dashcam, unless you’ve got proof at that specific time he was driving. They have to do that for each video and time
@@Augie.. Everyone parroting stuff like this is the comments is putting too much faith in the american legal system, yes plea deals & money can lower sentences &/or get people off the hook, and even often police don't want to do their jobs & don't try to dig up evidence, but when you're a special case like 981 they can make an example, like what they've been trying to do with whistlindiesel & on the other side of the coin if you're a nobody then nobody will care if you disappear into the prison system. So basically on both ends of the spectrum 1% & 99% you can be fucked easily with the wave of a gavel, to say that oh it's fine, because the system works as it should is about as naive as applying logic to swimming, ofc you can logistically lower your chances of smacking or getting the book, but even 981/Float (seem to) recognize that, how much they suspend their disbelief on that fact idk, but especially that last bit of the interview it seems with the popularity of the channel they've definitely been taking the legal & life-risk implications at least more into consideration.
If people are spedding though there still would be cutting up cause even passing regularly and at a normal speed will slow someone speeding down. Depending on how fast you’re coming they can’t stay out of the lane and you can’t expect them to brake or heavily accelerate just to get out of the way
@@MrNorotic not just left lane. middle lane too. I watched all the dashcam compilations. Cammers be camping in the middle lane complaining about people cutting up. Its so aggravating because what they are complaining about is a symptom of their lack of lane discipline. Keep right except to pass and then they wouldn't be able to do that.
@@traceyoung9876 camping in the left lane is when there is literally someone behind the person for an extended amount of time and the person thinks nothing of it. Someone being in the left lane and moving right as they see someone pop up behind them is what they should be doing. Its not like people are going to just ram into the person, theyll brake and wait 5-10 seconds for the person to move
I hope we don't all gather back here in a year or two to watch this video from a different perspective- these dudes will either retire from this, or die. I'm saying that as a fan- even got the swim merch lol 💜
I know dudes that ride like this for years, usually 20s and early 30s. Given the swim teams, rational, calm, calculated cuts, and mostly non-criminal activities (traffic tickets aren't criminal acts). They are far more likely to get caught and probably face jail time than die. They are skilled drivers, and I'm not saying that they will never make a slight miscalculation while swimming and get caught with bad luck, but as it stands, with how they measure the risks and pick which situation to run from and driving skill, they are far more likely to get caught then die in a fiery blaze. NA traffic laws need real reformation regardless, Street swimming is largely a byproduct of the shitty NA transportation regime, with laws feuled by fear rather than sensibility. As 981 said, our highways are designed to safely go much faster than 60 (permitting traffic and line of sight). If we had the sensibility of the Germans, things would be much different. It doesn't make sense to penalize more competent and skilled drivers that aren't causing egregious risks to public safety, I'n a continent ruled by the automobile. Either way, all love for 981, for the longest time, I thought I was alone. I do hope he retires one day, or takes a lower profile. Lucks gotta run dry or NYPD might look to make an example. Would rather see him live on as a legend among the community and example of why the road rules in NA are broken, rather than anything else.
@@Cardiakk Track racing and street racing is not the same, and this isnt even street racing tbh, its swimming/cutting which is another thing entirely than normal racing imo..
I tend to swim on the highways I have for years. When you started talking about it really coming from left lane campers it’s true everywhere in the USA except roads like i-70 where it’s 2 lanes, people don’t even know what lanes are for passing or traveling. They just drive where and how fast they feel
People are very observant of passing etiquette on interstates. Once you get into even slightly congested areas, everybody seems to forget how to drive.
@@eclipse1201 for the most part I agree but there are still idiots on these interstates. When I did road trip from Boston to Chicago, some people really just sat in the left of a two lane road and didn’t move over
Here in Canada it's sort of bizarre, national and provincial highways are the only places most people follow lane etiquette, and yet a three lane highway is usually treated like a two lane, one passing and two cruising, for some inane reason. Cop presence here is also insane, but unlike deep in the city, if you get caught out there, you'd better be cooking good cause they'll run you down in a few minutes no problem. I've been told they don't bother chasing you and simply radio ahead at a certain speed, the exact number being enigma to idiots like myself, it seems to change all the time, but sometimes it's down to luck whether you get away cause it's nothing but small towns and countryside out there and it's a fair six miles to the next exit.
@@nicolasa.3192 Not sure what part of Canada you're talking about but I can attest that lower mainland area is goddamn terrible, so many drivers with literally 0 awareness
This shit might be fun till you kill somebody. When you see some candles on the side of the road think about that next time. My step sister was with two friends and nearly died from the idiot driving, he was running stop signs. T-boned a mother and killed her instantly. SUV rolled and step sisters friend got ejected from the vehicle and has brain damage. Driver was 17 tried as adult and got 6 years. Step sis was beat up but okay.
bro omg facts when he said that a wave of nostalgia hit. I remember watching all his videos and seeing him grow he became a beast in the Miata. that thing was handling crazy. he would keep up with crazy sports cars in the curves in it.
Wow they're all so young, I remember driving like that when I was in my early 20s and now in 30s I'm like I'll wait for traffic to clear and be a little late. Young and invincible for sure
I don't think 981 or float take unnecessary risks, but Bri and 929cuts definitely do, those dudes do some sketchy shit sometimes and I hope they don't end up ruining it for everyone else. I do love some Bri and 981 runs tho, he's just gotta chill sometimes lol.
@@pavito9997 He takes some real risky cuts, if he doesn't crash then he's gonna cause someone else to crash and they'll just be fucked. How about you tell them to stop endangering hundreds of lives and grow up, or do they have to see what happens when they crash and end up killing someone first?
Critical, you demonstrated great patience throughout this interview. It is sometimes very easy to interrupt if you are curious about something the interviewees said. You did an excellent job listening for relatively long periods of time. Not always easy to find this patience and great deal of listening skills among other interviewers, great job!
I used to do this up until I missed hitting a 7 year old girl that ran out in the road with her bicycle by a few feet. I was going about 70 down a town street and ended up crashing into a tree head on at 50. The cop that was chasing me called off the chase minutes ago but I was routing back to the highway. Changed my life this accident & Ive been in contact with that girl since 2016 and have a good friendship with her & her mother who near her that day. when I see people do this I don’t hate on it because I did it too. I just know that my time has ran out in this activity and now I’ve just got to spectate it 😂
If you don't condemn this then you clearly didn't learn your lesson bro, you could have just as easily killed that girl for no reason other than selfish self-preservation. These people are doing the exact same thing and putting other people's lives at risk in the exact same way
Realistically, driving that fast down a town or neighborhood street is the problem. These two don’t really do that much, but they’re used to hella traffic.
@@joeballz25 You can def swim through traffic at reasonable speeds, that’s how most people are. Even Where’s is fairly relaxed in the cuts he’s taking, you don’t have to endanger lives to swim through traffic. It’s a higher chance that somebody else does something stupid and hits you anyways, so they’re endangering lives just by driving
@@Augie.. no brother you're just incorrect. crashing at 60+ mph ALWAYS has a chance of being fatal. When you fly by people doing 60+ at 100+ mph you are putting them at a massive risk because you could very easily side swipe them or just bump them off course causing them to crash. there's no disagreeing with this, this is just fact. I don't care how great of drivers you think they are, it doesn't mean there is a very low chance of hitting anybody else, you can literally go see their near misses with people that could've ended in a fatal crash.
I really don’t like street racers & takeover clowns but these two specifically, represent a more mature & well thought out division of street racers. From the break down of the swim team to thought process of when & where to pull over vs run this was super fun to watch.
someone else finally gets what ive been trying to say, theres a difference between clowning around and speeding and taking precise movements to get away from law enforcement and controlling your car on the limit of grip.
that feeling he’s talking abt is almost like a flow of water, being able to weave through traffic, spot openings close and reopen, the pace of traffic around you, looking a mile ahead of you then immediately checking your blind spots to move, its a zone few people are able to get into even with 20 years of driving experience, the body of the car becomes the drivers body, imagine being able to feel a front fender crunch as if it was your knee getting hit, it’s just you flowing through traffic processing a thousand thoughts a second feeling the most alive while being the closest to dying 😏
I knew these two were super smart. You can just tell by how they talk that they've got IQ on their side. The part at 45:08 about not letting your Ego drive is so intelligent and wise, mad respect.
Number 1 thing real drivers who do this do, you gotta establish rules. You gotta establish some kind of code of conduct. My rules, 1. Always think before you move, GOOD JUDGEMENT is KING. If you're not confident in a move, DON'T. 2. NEVER drive with your Ego. Don't do things you don't normally do, don't break your rules. It's not a race, it's not a contest. Know when to quit. 3. NEVER TAKE THE SHOULDER. All manner of things are in the shoulder, it's a hazard, NEVER DO IT. 4. Know your car, should go without saying, but know what you're working with.
@F F You can tell they aren't drug dealing criminals by the way they drive. They dont get desperate, and despite cutting up traffic, they still display restraint, like slowing down before running reds in the city.
This was incredible to watch especially since there is a level of mystery removed just hearing their perspective and how they handle things was awesome to hear thank you for giving us an insight in to what you do!
this introduced me to float but ive been watching 981 since like 10k subs and hes never uploaded anything worse than half the stuff u see from the police chases all over the internet but from the pov of the cops. these guys can drive. the cops get a little "training" on defensive and attack driving. but these boys, DRIVE
I am utterly disappointed in myself for not making the same investment decisions. This man got his license way after I did and is driving a car that looks 1000000000x better than mine
Love how he first brings up just driving every night. When I got my z for the first time I would literally earn money working just to spend it driving around. God how I miss my car. And what I’d do for the chance to drive a vehicle like a Porsche cayman. Loved the video!
Unless they stop today, one of them is 100% going to get caught, and the police will make him talk. They will throw the book at all of you and that means prison for a long time, and permanent suspensions on licenses. Once they get you out of the car, yall will never get behind the wheel legally for the rest of your lives even when you get out. Worth thinking about, no point in being rich if you have no freedom.
Okay, like yes hes a good driver. But I think hes a psychopath. He knows hes endangering a lot of people but he doesnt care, he does it anyway. He said that himself. Driving fast is fun. Everyone likes driving fast. But cutting up like that is stupidly dangerous and its why I'll never do that.
I’m glad that this dude realizes how stupid it is what they’re doing, driving 140+ mph through traffic. It’s fun and games until something unexpected happens and people die as a result. In my city, two guys in X5M and Camaro SS had a spontaneous street race that ended with three people dead and three injured plus a dead dog. Guy in X5 rear ended a Volvo, which changed lanes and didn’t see him coming (X5 was moving over 200 kph). Other cars also took a hit and flew to the curb, where innocent pedestrians got hit also. The scumbag X5 driver’s lawyer tried to put the blame on dead Volvo driver that he claimed caused the accident when he switched lanes, but luckily the court didn’t see it that way. So yeah, don’t do this shit, please.
I've been driving in NYC for over 14 years and I can say that most people in NYC do NOT drive like how they do and do NOT run from the police all the time. Are there lots of them that do? Sure, but not Most. That is some gross exaggeration. It's crazy for me to read the comment section and see how these guys are almost being idolized as being intelligent and iconic. There is nothing intelligent about driving the way they do in such traffic. Some may hate me for saying this but the things they do puts so many other people's lives in danger. I own a modified 520whp STI, rode a 600cc supersport and I have cut up, weaved, gone 135mph+ on NYC highways before. So it's tough for me to criticize anyone, but to make a living out of doing such thing is nothing to worship. You can say oh I weigh the consequences but weighing the true consequence is understanding how your choice of actions can cause harm to not only yourself but to those around you as well. This guy has been driving for 3 years now, meaning he learned to drive during COVID times where roads were empty and he is just learning to really drive in the city. I hope he takes his "skills" to the tracks and not juggle the lives of dozens of those that he is cutting up. One thing he is 100% accurate on is the horrible lane discipline in USA. People hog the passing lane which ultimately causes faster moving vehicle to pass on the right. However, this doesn't apply to his situation because he clearly said that he goes out every night to simply speed and cut up in traffic. So it's not out of the necessity of getting to his destination quickly, but he is cutting up for the sake of cutting up.
I couldn’t imagine running in New York, you got a 4 way intersection like every 20 feet and all it takes is one car to make you slam the brakes and get caught or cause a crash. I’m in the Deep South, you just hit a back road and floor it and take a few turns and your safe.
it's no doubt much easier running in the south with more open roadways, and literal backroads that are pretty much deserted 98 percent of the time..to actually run in New York with 100% success rates countless times take some serious skill...where981 and Float in my honest opinion would have no problem in Arkansas either although may people think otherwise..unless they pull out the helicopters, or even the scatpack pursuits, they'd still be successful..New York is a highly compact city, and being able to evade in such a tight knit environment in insane..states like Arkansas, Texas, and Nevada take less skill but more power..power won't even matter in NY if you're unable to wiggle your way out of traffic, and that's non-debatable..
It's impressive how well spoken 981 is. I at least thought he'd be someone who wasn't very educated, but he clearly is aware and reflective, and that's probably the reason he hasn't gotten caught yet
definitely heard the part about driving either clicking or not, some people can get into a car for the first time and have near perfect spatial awareness and others really struggle.
Men generally have better spatial awareness than women, that’s why women sucking at driving is a stereotype. Not to shame them, but that one really fits sometimes 🤣
All for 981 and all but one thing you gotta always keep in mind too is that a lot of these new upcoming po’s dont have much experience, be careful out there because even if you know for a fact by law they can’t hit your vehicle for just “speeding”, they always will find an excuse to justify anything to save their own ass and play hero
All it will take is one pig under cover or in a personal vehicle to purposely cut in front of them and cause an accident to end this man’s life..The longer you live the more you realize that cops do not follow the law, this guy is sorely mistaken..
I started doing this 8 years ago before the RU-vid/tiktok boom, No egos, no doing it for attention, just pure friendly competitive driving. It was small groups, everyone kept a safe distance, life was good. The moment nohesi and these youngins started doing it to get views, the bullshit drivers came out. I only cut up from time to time now only with close friends and at night, because nowadays it’s 17 year old kids who watch these guys think they know what they’re doing but in reality they have no experience and blind confidence. Trying to whiteline and cut into super tight spaces comes at a cost, with accidents happening every few minutes. No much we can do about it since RU-vid/TikTok has taken over this generation. Drive safe fellow swimmers
I'm from the south. This kind of driving is done here, but radar detectors are a must. Avoiding starting a chase is winning the chase every time. You can't really get away most places in the south outside of maybe dead in the middle of town and it's not really worth the risk because they will pit you or spike tires. On a bike though, it's a whole other story. Most southern states don't pit bikes but may still try to spike which is easily avoided usually. Sometimes you can literally just go where they can't, like supermoto on trails, sidewalks, alleys, hell even stairs on smaller bikes lol.
I'd imagine you'd live in a large city to see driving like this. Where I am in the South, it can only be defined as redneck country, with most of the cops in the town not even caring about stuff like this once they meet their ticket quota for the months. The State Troopers though, they don't play and will chase you as far as they can see you.
So in a side note that people should be informed about when it comes to uploading content like them, wheres981 already made his first mistake of his career by accurately giving the year, make and model of the car he drives. An agency who has a task force dedicated to working against street racing and bike stunting and shit, can easily now search the database for all the owned cars that match his and start going garage to garage looking for the car with the front and back mounted cams in the car that he records with. Match the car color, year, make and model. Then obtain a warrant for the content of the micro sd card for all cameras in possession of the suspect and start going from there to find all the proof they need to make a conviction on the felony charges. So it’s possible they CAN convict with evidence provided that was not encountered in the presence of a law enforcement official. Just saying. This is a clout video i get it, but still just hush some shit out bro 😂
I love cars and I live performance driving but doing it on public roads around innocent civilians with their kids and families in the car is EXTREMELY immature. I used to do it too and thank goodness I’m not sitting in a jail cell for 30 years for vehicular homicide or something similar. Go to a track. It’s way more satisfying and you can push your car much farther. Stop endangering people because if you kill someone and you have a soul you’ll never be able to forgive yourself.
HPDE costs quite a bit and gentrification and NIMBYs who buy houses near race tracks keep getting tracks shut down. I wish it was as easy as taking it to the track
@@hughjassstudios9688 you don't need HPDE to do a track day, just a license and a helmet. There's 2 tracks about 100 miles from NY. I'm not saying you can't have a blast on the road when it's clear and safe to do so, but these guys are just reckless and could easily kill an innocent person. There's no excuse for this kind of driving.
It's much different than driving on track or any race scenario, it takes real balls and a bit of something that you can't quite describe in words. Only certain people of a certain mind set can do this well. Me and a couple guys used to have subies that we'd do this around Salt Lake in back in 2005 to 2012 era
The internet and the peoples ability to post whatever they want is the reason why the scene is so hot right now. Cuttin up will soon be nearly impossible unless you run fake plates & know the surrounding area better than the officer following you

That's so true what he said that most new Yorkers drove like this and run from the cops they just don't record it. I remember summer of 2013 my black C63 was the hottest fucking car in staten island every cop in all 4 precients was looking for my car I had it parked in my dad's garage for like 4 months. I ran from them on the expressway coming from jersey acted like I was heading for the verazano took the last exit got on father cap blvd hit about 150+ I made it from the bridge to midland Beach in like 2 mins 😅 dipped towards my parents house parked it inside the garage walked to the deli got a beer watched the cops drive up and down the blvd looking for my car. Went home and my car stayed there for the rest of that summer. Next day there was an article in the staten island advance how the NYPD has been hunting a black C63 mercedes for the past 3 months who has been qoute "menacing" the island 😅 Good times good times currently working on a nice new E63 can't wait to get it finished and running Edit: just finished watching the video pretty sure i know exactly which car wash you were heading to. That strip there under the F train by the coney island railyard is super fun at night itll be completely dead to bad the road itself is absolute trash probably my biggest problem with new york is our shitty roads absolute nightmares in some places. This is probably also why i was attracted to your videos is because im just watching people run from cops in my neighborhood where i have also done it i know exactly where hes most likely going where his next turn might possibly be and its cool to just see some areas you personally havent been to in awhile and see how things are still. Ill always love new york city its truly one of the greatest cities in the world dont care what anyone says or doesnt like about it
Wow dude, what a massive reference drop for Daily Street Racing. That dude is awesome to watch. This kind of racing, much like most kinds of racing, are not for the faint of heart. This is really interesting video.
Nyc has always been like this due to the road system along with 50 mph speed limit. This would be damn near impossible to do if everyone was driving 80-90 like they do in Texas.
I'll explain the speeding, losing your license, plate thing. Since you guys didn't seem to have a clear understanding. There are two kinds of infractions. Ones that punish the owner, and ones that punish the driver and somewhat the owner. If your car is caught speeding by a camera, or a trajectory control (that's what it's called here in the Netherlands (Like an average speed calculating thing with cameras)), or you are found to be illegally parked, then the owner gets a ticket. That is because it is not possible to prove who drove the car or parked the car, however, the owner of the car, regardless of the driving of the driver, needs to be held accountable. The owner of the car, will not receive any points on their license. However, here in the Netherlands, if the speed was WAYY too high in a picture, you will need to appear in court as the owner and tell them one hell of a good story to explain how you weren't the one that drove that fast, or you lose your license. That is the only exception where the owner can lose their license due to a speed camera. The second type of driving infraction is when they witness or catch you speeding or driving recklessly. In this case, both the driver and the owner are in trouble if caught, the driver more than the owner. The driver needs to be caught to get points on their license. If the driver is not caught they can look for the car but they cannot hold the owner accountable for the driving of the driver. The owner cannot receive points on their license. However, I did say the owner will be in trouble. That is because regardless of who was driving, the car is evidence of a crime, and they can confiscate the vehicle as part of their investigation. The owner will need to prove that they could not have known that the vehicle would be used to drive recklessly. I hope this clears things up and I hope it is what most countries follow in terms of rules. Perhaps in the US it's more lenient than here but I am sure there are many similarities!

@@str8shoota745 when dude with barely 2 years of driving experience will kill someone they will cry why he was able to post videos for a year almost...im telling you its super easy to find him, especially in nyc..and super easy to connect him to crimes..dude selling fjking merch while committing hundreds counts of charges per week
@@vandalov777 why don’t you go find him then? I’m in nyc sounds like you don’t even live here. I’ve been to every spot he’s driven in videos haven’t seen him once and if I did probably wouldn’t even know it’s him. You’re all talk anyways why would you want his down fall hater
@@str8shoota745 how did u read? i texted that i moved from sh1thole a few years ago. And im not going to do job for the cops. And im not against driving fast on highway. but when dude who barely 2 years experienced its insane.
i love the fact that he brings up that he wouldnt cut up nearly as much if people just drove like they were supposed to. left lane for passing, not for going above the speed limit.
