Thanks for the block video Coach I may have a suggestion for volleyball: Could you do a video about some Warming Up exercises befor playing volleyball?

Hey Donny, thanks for the videos, they've been really helpful. Could you make a video about blocking the middle as an outside hitter. As an outside I'm not always sure as to when I should transition to blocking middle. Thanks!

Love it... Keep the vids coming Donny. Hand position is such a critical thing for the block.

This was honestly THY most useful informative video i've seen relating to blocking. Both parts will be used in a live recreational match. The following the setter which eliminates the middle shot is really good knowledge. As well as the closing the gap between your hands when you commit block.

all great tips coach. if there was one area of difference, I would encourage some of your followers to spread their block wider than ball width on all hitters and then close it up on a hitter that will risk trying to hit through your arms. taking to little space at the net seems a bigger sin than an occasional field goal. ps- tight sets you do not spread though

Keep up all the great videos Donny! what's your take on how to block someone that is taller than you and can OT? do you still penetrate low? or penetrate less and reach high? Or even pull off a bit and soft block?

I would also like to know how to block effectively on a really tall spiker

+Weilee Wu Taking square footage away is the name of the game with blocking. If the height advantage is that great traditionally there are a couple options. 1. Soft block - Penetrate the net as far as you can but go palms up in a slight angle. That way, if the hitter is hitting downward towards you the block can take some momentum off the ball giving an opportunity for your defense behind you to pick it up. You also want to protect your hands as the angle of the ball going straight into your fingers could potentially dislocate them, so soft blocking is a good option. 2. Delay your block - Sometimes if the opposing hitter has some serious hang time, you can slightly delay your jump so your peak jump will be when he's swinging. You can take away space the hitter thought he had when he went up, forcing him to go somewhere else, or you may get some good touches. 3. A combo of 1 + 2 - If you don't get up all that high, taking away some space is better than taking away no space at all. You may find that hitters will want to crush the ball on or through you because you're smaller. A combination of these techniques may catch the hitter off guard. I've actually roofed a few leapers even though I didn't jump as high.

hi. you need to do both. you need to penetrate (to take away width) but also reach high enough to intercept the hit ball. if the ball hits your hands then you've got it. arms is too high.

+Elevate Yourself That's what I've been leaning towards. Penetrate so they can't just slip the ball between your block and the net, but more emphasis on reaching high. Creating a decent block that hopefully the defense can play around. Then what do you do if they keep tooling off the high hands? Lol

Coach, I'm a left wing spiker and when I started volleyball which was a year ago I couldn't receive anything however I had good spikes because of my arm strength and vertical, now neither my arm strength nor my vertical has declined but i can't seem to spike like I did before. Our school coach says it was a problem with my "clippings" or my wrist movement to make the ball go down. Do you have any drills or advice for this. I find this a major problem for me because I find it pulling down my other volleyball skills like receiving because I'm so frustrated with not getting one good spike in a game. Thanks and continue teaching.

Thanks for the video coach! I play in a casual social grade team and most of my successful blocks occur when i attempt to block late. So quick question: Does the timing of the block matter? or is it bcuz im in a beginner grade
@hvaball150
@hvaball150 8 лет назад
+Tee Chayz Tee, I can offer at least 3 reasons why you are seeing more success when you "feel" late, which may actually be on time. I think it applies to all levels of play, not just beginners. 1. most people jump approx six inches higher on the spike approach than the block. so a blocker whom jumps moments after the spiker will arrive at their peak the same time the spiker does. 2. it takes an additional few moments for the ball to travel from the spikers hand to your block. the farther the set is off the more time it takes. so this can again make the blockers jump wait longer to meet the ball at the peak. 3. a late jump means late hands to the blocks final position which means less time for the hitter to make an adjustment to the direction of spike to go around it. spikers will make more errors simply because they could not read the block in time.

I think im in the less time for them to react to the block part bcuz whenever i jump with the spiker they tend to find gaps or most likely go around me entirely. Thanks for the information guys.
