In this video I demonstrate how I make an oval rope mat. This mat looks like the ABoK 2274, but it is tied in my own way.
I used about 32 feet of 1/4 inch hemp rope for this project.
All in all, this is one of my favorite mats. Works well as a door mat or as a hot pad under hot dishes on the table.

My husband is an Alaskan commercial fisherman, his dad was as well. His dad retired last year. I think I’m going to make him some hot pads for Christmas this year. Thank you. This tutorial was definitely easy to follow. You did an excellent job.

Hello mark thank you very much for showing your skills. I made some prolongmates with your help. I used hemp rope and i found out if i shower the ready mat hot it became very hard like a board. So you can better use as footmat

Hey! Interesting idea, I will have to try it myself! I know that rope becomes harder in the sun, for example on boats, but I have never showered a mat. Thank you very much for the input! Mark

Great tutorials. I want to make a circular mat. So I am assuming I would just rework this pattern without the end bights? But figuring out might be a challenge.
