As a Flyers fan I thought we would take Leonard or Dvorsky thinking that Michkov would already be drafted before Philly made their pick and quite honestly I'm really happy it all worked out the way it did and that we got him.

I mean to be fair he would have always been compared to Ovi in Washington touted as the next superstar for the franchise, those are huge shoes to fill, to be compared and pressured to perform as well as the greatest countryman his country has ever had in the sport, Michkov may have wanted his own identity

Honestly I was shocked michkov went at 7th, that’s “geopolitics” at work. Obviously hes not ready to be in NHL yet but barring serious injury this kid is going to develop quite well. Especially since the work ethic of Russian players is generally top notch.

I don't know why any team would draft him when they say I don't want to play for a certain team. Getting drafted in the NHL to any team is a privilege. You don't hear Bedard saying I don't want to go to a crap team that I grew up hating, now do you? LOL.

I tell ya what happened here. In the '12 draft the Caps drafted Tom Wilson, which stunned the Flyers because they were strongly going to select Wilson when it was their turn. 21 years later the Flyers Touch'ed the Caps. Obviously, Habs stupidly did not pick Michkov, which to me shows they either chose a need or they didn't want to wait 3+ years on Michkov to come over(maybe a bit bias against Russians as well?). Leonard seemed like an obvious fit for the Flyers, but maybe that would have happened more so with the previous PHO and GM. Keith Jones/Brier have seen how huge of an impact Ovechkin was(Brier knows too well having played against Ovechkin as a Flyer). So this time around, the Flyers chose Michkov to be their Ovechkin in their own right.

Just speculation: Its a Russian politics thing. Ovi remains a Putin supporter despite the current attrocities and I have a sneaking feeling Michkov might disagree. Being from a Ukrainian-American family myself and having plenty of Russian friends I'm well aware of how deeply divisive the issue becomes as soon as people are in a place to speak their minds. Michkov might be trying to avoid getting caught up in propaganda cycles because he saw how Ovi's celebrity was used for propaganda. It would definitely explain why he was so unpleasant to Capitols scouts.

Where he can likely just be snatched into the armed forces,or basically told that he cannot leave for the NHL? i am not sure what the rules are,but Michkov does have a 2-year contract to play in Russia Can the Flyers buy him out of that? Is there a way to get him into Philly any sooner? Is the Fedotov situation written in stone now? And he cannot come to Philly? Did he not sign a legal contract? Why did he betray the contract? One of the Caps scouts or admin guys said Michkov had "personality issues". That would be enough for me to make a hard pass on Washington. Even if it was to devalue him a bit so he slipped enough for Washington to snag him, it's still not cool. I do think Mich going to be a prima donna and locker room cancer, but that's what Philly deserves so it's all good. LGP!

He probably didn’t want to go to Washington because he knows he’d always be in Ovi’s shadow. In Philly he can be his own man. And the only comparison would be they’re both Russian goal-scorers who play wing. And there’s lots of those. Tarasenko, Kucherov, Kaprizov, to make a few.

I knew Philly was taking michkov it was just more along the lines were Montreal or Phoenix going to take him or if they weren't were they going to trade their pick to somebody who was. As others on here have said if he went to Washington he would have been ovi Jr for the rest of his career. Why Philly? We've never had a rocket winner or a 500 goal scorer in our franchise. Honestly outside of Tim kerrs 4 straight 50 goal or John LeClair 3 straight 50 goal seasons had a consistent sniper. He could potentially be the greatest goal scorer in flyers history. He is already in my opinion the most hyped flyers draft pick ever.

can someone explain why a Ovi and Michkov line sounds like a match made in heaven? They literally dont have any connection besides the fact that they come from the same country. It makes no sense, everyone just saw that there was a chance for a russian kid to play with ovi and then started hyping that pairing up. They dont play similar at all, they have no relation to each other or friendship, and clearly Michkov doesnt have any of his own reasons to play with Ovi

Really a bold move by the Flyers because they already had messed up and traded off Provorov, where many thought he could be a D-man cornerstone for the Flyers. If this backfires, then Jones/Brier will be given the pink slip for it. The Caps have the Russian culture on the team in place, so Michkov would have fit in comfortably. Personally I think Michkov staying for another 3 years in the KHL, will hurt his potential in his development. KHL doesn't play the North American game and they play on Olympic ice. Also, the KHL is not gonna provide proper competition for Michkov when he comes to the NHL. I know in the AHL super stars are targeted, but a season of the AHL would do a lot of good for Michkov in transitioning from Olympic ice/Passive hockey to the smaller NHL size/NHL grind.
